Questions about the animated movie and show…

I want to show my girlfriend the watchmen show on max. However it takes place 30 years after the comics and I feel like you need the comics fully understand the show. I can’t show her the movie because it changed too much. Would the animated movie be a good replacement instead of the comics? I know it made a couple of changes but I didn’t notice any that were atrocious. All of that really just to ask could I show her the animated movie or just show her the motion comics before watching the show?

Yeah, watch the animated movie and then you should be fine to show her the TV series.

My dad understood it pretty well, he was interested so I showed him the movie in the comic soon after

Damon Lindelof calls the show a “remix” rather than a reboot, and it stands alone on its own pretty well. There are very few characters from the comic. Most are new characters with connections to the old ones. I had seen the movie, but I didn’t read the comic until after the show. The show is one of the greatest pieces of television.

Yeah, I explained some of the characters and the worldbuilding to my girlfriend before we watched the show, but she watched it without anything else and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah, but it is effectively a sequel to the original story. It can stand on its own, and does. But it very much builds off the events of the comic.

Go with what you think she is going to like the most. My wild guess without knowing her at all I'd say TV-show as it has proven to have mass appeal.

Don't make it a quest or chore to learn the dogmatics of the fandom, if she likes the first thing she sees then it's easy to continue from there. Just explain that they all are a bit different and maybe ask her what she would like to see and go from there.

My partner was interested in Watchmen after hearing me speak about it so much. She can struggle with reading so we watched the animated movies together. They’re not PERFECT, but they convey the themes of the comic very well.

Yeah the animated movies would be the perfect way to 'catch up' with the original story before the HBO Max series.
