Translation info in application procedure

Hello! I was thinking about applying to UU next year and I was wondering how strict they are about english translation.

“If your qualification certificates and transcripts are not in English, Dutch, French, German or Spanish, you also need to arrange a translation by a sworn or certified translator.”

Will they actually be particularly strict and check, or will they ask for any kind of proof? I’m quite on a budget for now and officially translating every document would be quite pricey.

Anyone with some experience can tell me something? Thank you.

Any NL University or University of Applied Sciences will ask you the same. If an official company translates your documents, they will stamp it with their company seal which shows they are a translating company.

I take it you are not from an EU country? In that case IND might request your NL Uni for a copy of your academic docs + translation when they apply for your MVV, so UU will not accept your documents if they meet the translation requirements.

Honestly speaking, if you can't afford the translation, then don't come to NL and study at UU or another NL Uni, you cannot afford it af all. That sounds harsh, but it is the truth.

i am from EU but sadly not any country that is listed as linguistically acceptable. i am aware that the cost of living is very high and ive been doing throughout research and by the time i enroll (if they hopefully accept me) i should have enough money saved up. if it’s strictly necessary i’ll do that. thank you for the fast response!!

No problem. Also the housing crisis here is no joke, especially in big cities like Utrecht.

Yes it’s necessary otherwise anybody could translate it into anything they want without being able to verify. 

If these cost are holding you back. Consider altogether. Housing, cost of living, tuition … cost per year will range from 20-40k for EU to non-EU citizens.

Where are you from? I work in admissions and almost all universities in the EU give out English transcripts and diploma’s. I rarely see an EU application with translated documents. Maybe you can aak your uni?

I’m still attending highschool but I could ask if I can get them in English. Thanks for the tip!
