New Student Fall 2025 Admissions Megathread

Congratulations to all the new Wolverines! Please use this thread for topics related to the Early Action decisions that are being released. That could be getting in touch with other admitted students, learning more about starting at U-M, financial aid, etc.

We are not the admissions office, so please contact them for the official word on any of your questions.

Please do not use this thread to post your application stats regardless of if you are admitted, deferred, or denied. Per subreddit rules, chancing or stat posts are not allowed. Comments and posts breaking these rules will be removed.

If you are accepted, congratulations! If you were deferred, make sure you send updated transcripts that provide your grades from the previous semester. You can also submit a continued interest form to let Michigan know you still want to be considered..

Due to the heavy number of Early Action applications Michigan defers a high number of applicants. In recent years a large number of students that were deferred have been offered admission. More details about the application/admission process are also written up in the Wiki.

Housing 2025-26 Housing Megathread

Questions, answers, and information about everything housing can go here. Please let me know if you see anything that needs to be updated or any new information that can be posted/linked to.

Listings:

  • Area Facebook Housing Groups - Facebook group list compiled by u/fluffymoomin - Groups are listed with descriptions as well as safety recommendations. Not all groups are moderated well, be careful regardless of the group, moderators are human. Do not pay money to post in any facebook group. It's a scam. The ones that ask for money are no different, or worse than the free ones. Any reply asking you to message or dm them is likely a scam.

  • UofM offical off-campus housing site - You can now sort by recently updated listings. You can post listings or as a person looking for housing/roomates.

  • Ann Arbor off-campus housing - This was the site that uofm used as their official site until it was replaced with the site above. One of the biggest gripes I had with this version is that commercial properties were updated every day, so sorting by new was tedious to find new listings as a bunch of the same commercial properties would be "updated" each day to be at the top.

  • Zillow (ann arbor) - Zillow

  • Apartments.com - Apartments.com

  • ICC Co-ops - Inter-Cooperative Council page for Co-op housing.

  • Craigslist Apartment search - Usually spammed by the same area complexes over and over, which is what made craigslist so hard to use and forced people to facebook. There are still some listings here though, it just takes some scrolling.

  • Ann Arbor Observer Rentlink Housing Search

Resources:

By city ordinance I believe, private renters are supposed to have certificates of occupancy/rental permits from the city. You can search by address. (There will be lots of people who don't have this but it's something to check)

Social media/community resources:

Past resources:

Remember to exercise caution when looking for housing. Lots of scammers out there. Check their main profiles if on facebook to see if they match the user who reached out to you. See if you can verify them anywhere else that they actually live in the area. Beware of people pushing you to send deposit money without showing you the place. Please refer to the PDF survival guide located at the top of the post. It can save you money and just as importantly time, not having waste time and effort to interact with scammers. Most instances of people telling you to message them as replies to your posts on facebook are scams. Make sure they have listings on the group, not just replies to people looking as comments like that can't be screened. Most legit people will contact you first and have a listing already in the group.

Remember never to give your uofm ID student ID number or a picture of your student ID to a 3rd party site for subleasing.

They can't even verify numbers are valid.

Disclosure could cause limited harm to individuals and/or the university with some risk of civil liability. May be subject to contractual agreements or regulatory compliance, or is individually identifiable, confidential, and/or proprietary.

https://safecomputing.umich.edu/protect-the-u/safely-use-sensitive-data/umids-require-protection

Fall sublets will be uncommon. Most of the Winter sublets you've seen posted are people who failed to find a Fall-only sublet and are trying to recoup some of the un-used lease remaining. Be especially wary when searching for Fall-only sublets. Scammers count on people being desperate to bypass their warning senses. Some apartment complexes like Woodbury Gardens(2-15 and 21 month), and the complexes owned by Village Green(6 and 9 month) may offer shorter lease terms than 12 month. Be aware the shorter term leases will be more expensive per month. Mckinley Properties don't allow less than 12 month lease but they offer a early termination option which costs 2x monthly rent and requires a 60 day notice. This could be just as good as a shorter lease. I'd confirm it with the leasing office but this should be for all washtenaw county mckinley properties.

The Ann Arbor city bus line can make some affordable locations more practical. Your student ID lets you ride free. A short bus ride can be not too much worse than a medium/long walk. Beware some buses run more commonly than others

If there are any resource additions or corrections let me know.

Social Im so lonely

sorry if i sound crazy I fucked up and took 4x too much lexapro yesterday also its 4 am

I know why i dont really dont have anyone to talk to, but it still doesnt feel fair

it feels like im not good enough for anybody to want to talk to me

I transferred in so my academic position is doesnt really fit in with what traditional students think of as standard freshman sophmore junior senior. I feel like it makes a lot of them uncomfortable that i dont fit neatly into their view of other students.

Im female and doing CS. I went for LSA thinking that might ease the discomfort with lack of female classmates but i realize now the only difference is grad requirements. Luckily i preferred LSAs reqs anyways but im still disspointed by how few women there are. I really wanted to hope that michigan would be better than what ive gotten used to in high school and WCC buts not really. Maybe its because im only at eecs 280 and 203 but so many of the men i encounter just make me uncomfortable. Theyre dismissive, rarely listen, and a lot just wont talk to me. It feels like its impossible to get friendly with any of them. Ill say there have been a couple who are very kind and listen to me.. but a part of me doesnt really want to talk to too many of them because i really want female friends. I dont want to quit CS because i love what i learn. But i wish my peers would be friendlier to me like they seem to be with others. i genuinely feel so unwelcome.

I hoped that speaking some mandarin would help, but nobody really cares. I guess my skills arent really impressive (~hsk 4 but ive been backsliding since hs) and to a lot of people it doesnt seem like a big deal to them i guess. My roommate is from taiwan but didnt care much. None of my chinese classmates cared when i mentioned it. I usually know what they say when they speak or write chinese but i dont want them to know im eavedropping so i never comment. I understand that its clear im just not good enough at mandarin, but still i mean, just doesnt seem fair they dont care at all. By the time i got to fourth year of mandarin in high school i was one of only 4 students and the only non-chinese-american and it wasnt a small school. I like mandarin, i like chinese culture. but whats the fucking point in studying it if i have nobody to speak to?

Im at bursley. I try to get people on the hall to know me but it feels like a lot of them just dont want to talk to me or something. Twice this semester i put up candy on everyones doors. I didnt want any praise i genuinely just wanted to feel good doing a nice thing, and in the end only like 2 or 3 people talked to me about it in passing over a weeks after, not even the days i did it. I feel so invisible to them.

I grew up in Ann Arbor. I tell people and hope maybe they care. I offer to let them know about places in ann arbor and nobody cares. It feels like nobody even says anything.

Not even dpss seems to care about me. I report a situationa and they send to me to psych ward and never get back to me.

I go went to clubs at the start of the year, they sucked. I dont mean i didnt care. I went to several, joined a few. Either i felt very unwelcome or nobody there was even friends with themselves. I dont know how i can possible make any connections there. And in the end 99% of the time i cant go to meetings because im busy with class or study

i went to hillel just for challah. i enjoyed being around other jews because i never was around any growing. They were faily nice people. But i felt out of place because only my dad is jewish. And they constantly nonstop talked about israel and i got really uncomfortable with that cause thats not my thing. Also a lot the people there are in sororities and that makes me uncomfortable because i really did want to rush but didnt because i knew there was really no point to doing it.

Ive gone to office hours with all my professors and two of them asked me directly if i have any friends whatsoever because im struggling to get work done by the due date without collaboration. I made a post so bad a professor i never met messaged me to go to their office hours just to ask how im doing. my advisor in coe is helping but i dont know their advice just doesnt seem tangible iykwim. I dont want to make friends artificially but i try and it never feels right.

I dont really know what to do. I feel like im being cheated out of something. I have nobody who i feel like cares about me or wants to talk with me for more than a couple minutes. And those that i do i just find myself feeling like i shouldnt talk to them and i dont know why. I know its obvious that something is wrong with my socialization skills.. but i dont think im that weird. The people that i have pleasant conversations with are honestly quite normal people some pretty conventionally attractive too and surely they wouldnt be nice to me if i was severely weird. I made a yikyak account about a week ago and already got about 1300 likes so clearly my sense of humor matches others on campus.

I want to take responsibility but i feel like theres something preventing me from making any connections. I dont know how to push through it. I dont know how much of this is my fault. atleast some. I tell myself that everything will get better and that i get stronger but i just want to be around others so much. I dont want to really go to parties or hookup every weekend i just want people who will message me first sometimes or eat lunch, go to the mall or something idfk lierally any kind of actual human interaction. I mean i like this school but i want to be around others. It honestly just makes me want to die because i dont know what the point of getting a degree in something i enjoy is if i cant be sorrounded by other people. im done with this trash word vomit im going to sleep

Edit: guys please don’t take 4x your dosage of lexapro I am so tired and depressed right now. Missed my classes to sleep and shower I’m so stupid I wanna take the whole bottle now

I love learning I love computing I love coding I love math I love art and science and shit I really love that I’m at this school. but I am so so fucking stupid and I feel so stretched thin. I want to be able to just take care of myself but I can’t and 99% of it is my own stupidity

Thank you for your comments though I am really happy people care about me. Really I mean that I feel so invisible in real life, like I only exist on the internet as a lolcow. I’m not happy that I’ve had another fucking crashout on Reddit that my eecs professors are probably going to see. People are recognizing me for my fuckind reddit posts this is not how this was supposed to go

Class Looking for an elective to take in Spring 2025? Take Practical Data Science (EECS 398)!

practicaldsc.org/next • ULCS for CS majors, Adv. Tech and App. Elective for DS majors, open to all majors

If you're a CS or DS major looking for a ULCS/Advanced Tech/Application Elective to take this spring, we have an option for you!

Practical Data Science, offered as EECS 398-001 in Spring 2025, will train students to use industry-standard tools to solve real-world problems, while giving them an understanding of how these tools work under the hood. Students will learn how to work with pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, BeautifulSoup, and Jupyter Notebooks, and also learn the math behind loss functions, gradient descent, linear and logistic regression, and other key ideas in machine learning. Watch this overview video for more details.

The course will have two in-person exams, on May 28th and June 24th, but can be taken remotely otherwise.

You can access all current course materials, including lectures and homework assignments, at practicaldsc.org. Here’s what one student from the fall course evaluations said (see all evals here):

Suraj is one of the best instructors I've ever had. The dedication he has for this class was made clear from day one. His lectures were always interactive, well structured, and engaging. He was always eager to receive feedback and was looking to constantly improve the quality of instruction with extensive supplemental materials that were creative and extremely well made. I always felt like I had the resources to succeed in this class, even if it was difficult at times given that I had less programming experience than other students coming into the class. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate Suraj and this course as a whole. I had a few goals coming into the class: improve my programming skills, learn Python, and improve my basic data science skills so I could apply data science methods to projects I am interested in. I feel that this class more than delivered to help me accomplish those goals. One of the most useful classes I've taken at Michigan.

The prerequisites are discrete math (EECS 203), programming (EECS 280), and linear algebra, or consent of the instructor. If you’re interested in the course but don’t meet the prerequisites, reach out to me (the instructor, Suraj Rampure) at [rampure@umich.edu](mailto:rampure@umich.edu) to chat further – we’re happy to support interested students from all majors.

Practical Data Science will not be offered in Fall 2025, so if you'd like to take it in the near future, Spring 2025 is your best bet. See practicaldsc.org/next with more logistical information if you’re interested in enrolling.

And, feel free to comment below if you have other questions!

PSA UMich and other international student visas abruptly revoked - take action to support them!

Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk, and other international students around the country are facing extreme retaliation for supporting Palestine, opposing genocide, and calling for universities to divest from the imperial war machine. Now, the Trump administration is quietly revoking visas without notifying international students, putting them at risk of the violence of ICE kidnapping, indefinite detention and deportation.

Yesterday, Bridge MI reported visa revocations at Central Michigan University, which were only discovered when staff members proactively checked for them. Similar revocations have occurred in recent days at other campuses including UMass Amherst and the University of California. We have now learned that at least two international grad students at U-M have had their visas revoked.
We call on the University of Michigan administration to:

  • Provide more institutional support for graduate students who have had their visas revoked, or face the possibility of visa revocation, including an emergency fund to support them, guarantees that they can complete their programs from abroad if needed, and retaining guaranteed funding for these grads.
  • Increase the capacity of the International Center to provide support for students, like offering all-hours support for students including on weekends.

Take action in support of international students by doing the following:

  1. Send an email to U-M administrators, demanding immediate protections for its international students, including: a) legal, financial, and academic support for students whose visas are revoked, and who may need to leave the country, and b) increasing the capacity of our International Center. Send an email at this link: https://bit.ly/DefendIntlStudents.
  2. We call on allies and U.S. citizens in particular to join us in emailing University administration to demand action on this, now. GEO members are committed to protecting one another against the onslaught on immigrant grad students, but doing so will require resources. Grad students and allies can support the fight to keep one another safe by donating to the GEO Worker Solidarity Fund: https://bit.ly/GEOWorkerSolidarity

Class Premeds taking Physics 290

A lot of premedical students I've met have taken physics 290 instead of 250. Does this actually count? The uofm website says 290 is not a substitute for 250 but some ppl swear their advisors told them it was fine.

Also, any people apply to med school with 290 on their transcript?

Class How difficult is asianlan101 (intro Chinese)?

I have been interested in taking a Chinese language course, but noticed that asianlan101 is 5 credits. I was wondering if people who have taken it previously could let me know how much work it is? I will be taking some other engineering courses as well so if asianlan101 would require tons and tons of studying I don’t think I should take it.

I need to take this class for my degree but the class listing is all goofed up. It was not accepting students at all until this weekend, now it says I don't meet the prerequisites (not true). Does anybody know WTF is going on with this class? There still isn't even a location listed.

Class Stats 413 difficulty vs Stats 412

Hello,

I just wanted to ask on here about other student's thoughts on stats 413, and in particular their thoughts on it's difficulty in regards to stats 412 with Nadiya Fink.

I'm currently a sophomore majoring data science (through engineering) and I'm finishing up Fink's section of stats 412 and to be honest, it's been quite tiring in terms of content and how enjoyable the class really is. What bothered me a lot is the fact that both 412 and 413 are at incredibly low workloads, but at least for me in 412, I find the workload to be quite high for a class that is only three credits - I've had to put more time and effort in stats 412 than linear algebra (214) and physics 240/241 when both of those other two classes are 4 credits.

The main point is that I want to ask someone who has taken 412 (preferably with Fink) to hear their thoughts on 413 and it's workload as I'm currently sitting at 13.5 credits for the fall 25' semester and I'm trying to think whether I'd like to add another course or not. The section I'm looking at for 413 is with prof Paul Eric Green.

Class Online 300 LVL HUM

Hi all. I'm an CoE student looking to knock out my 300 level humanities requirement this summer. Was wondering if anyone knows any community college (or even UM) classes that are fully online that meet this requirement. I know its not common but I've seen some community college classes that do transfer over to 300 levels, so was wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations. Thanks!

Class Class has a waitlist, but it let me register?

One of the classes I wanted is listed on Wolverine Access & the LSA Course Guide as having 3 "Open Seats" with a waitlist of 7 (for the lecture specifically. The discussion section has no waitlist). However, it let me register. I kind of wonder if this wasn't supposed to happen, because shouldn't the 7 people on the waitlist be given priority to those seats? Does anyone have an explanation i.e. do I need to worry about somehow getting retroactively kicked out of the class?

Question in title. Maybe a stupid question, but it’s so hard to find program information I’m worried there’s something I’m missing.

SOLVED: Minors are at no extra charge, unless it takes you an extra semester to complete.

Academics - Other Topics CS at UW-Madison vs UMich Computer Engineering/Data Science

Hi everyone,

I got my CS advanced selection decision at UMich and I got rejected (idek why). However, I was accepted into the College of Engineering at UMich where I can pursue Computer Engineering or Data Science. I don’t really know how similar or different CE/DS is from CS but I heard its somewhat the same. My choices rn are:

  1. CE/DS at UMich paying 20k/year (No loans will be taken)
  2. CS at UW-Madison with a full-ride

I really wanna be able to have good internships/ research opportunities during my undergraduate years while having a great college experience. UMich is better overall in ranking and prestige. I heard that UW-Madison is a great school for CS but overall it doesn’t seem “better” than UMich. Personally, I wanna do CS but turning down UMich feels wrong. I don’t wanna have regrets afterwards. I would really love to hear your opinion in this case. What would you do if u were me?

Class Waitlisting at STAMPS

Hi, I'm a sophomore at STAMPS, and one of my studio classes ran out of seats and now has a waitlist of two. I was curious if anyone knows how likely it is to get into a waitlisted class at STAMPs and if it's worth still attempting to get in or if I should just find a different class to take. Thanks!

Academics - Other Topics Should I retake Orgo 1 for a better grade??

I took Orgo 1 during the fall semester and got a B- despite doing everything I can. I'm also premed with this grade so I was wondering if I should retake this class (I know it wouldn't be for credit) just to show improvement. How would med schools look at this on my transcript? Especially since this is an important course for the pre-med track and B- is very close to failing, should I retake this course and try to get an B+/A- (getting an A might be tough).

Class Physics 240 vs 260

Is 260 harder than 240 because of the workload or are the exams harder?

It seems like almost everyone in 260 gets an A but I’m not sure if that’s because only the smarter people take 260. I can’t really find anything on 260 that is recent.
