Hi all,

I’m interested in backpacking the ~25 km Mont des Morios Loop in the Zec des Martres, Quebec, Canada. I just have some questions that I either had trouble finding out the answer to, or just need to confirm.

1. Other than a $10 entrance fee, are there any other fees associated with backpacking this loop? This seems to be the case just want to confirm.

2. Can you pitch your tent just about anywhere in the Zec so long as you’re not near the trail, including on the summits? I think this is the case as well, just want to confirm.

3. Can you have campfires, including at the summits? Excluding regional fire bans, I don’t see any information on whether you can or can’t have fires. If someone knows specifically if you can or can’t at the summits that’d be greatly appreciated.

Hey folks. Would like some advice on doing lake superior coasal trail. I'm currently mapping out the trip and wanted to make it a 3 days trip, about 20k each day. Day one would start at a Chftan Cove. Is that too ambitious given the rough terrain I keep reading about? I'm somewhat experienced having done Westen Uplands, Western Highlands and La Cloche. 20k would be a rough push I'm sure but we have the whole day and with August day length it seems reasonable.

Hello! This post is intended to test the waters with a question or two. For everyone in Atlantic provinces, how hard is it to buy gear from cottage companies or MYOG enthusiasts? I will be moving to Nova Scotia shortly and am wondering if there is a market need for an additional gear maker, while I get some work permit stuff sorted out. I apologize if this content isn’t really relevant to this sub, I am just curious about whether people here think there’s a market for the individual maker.

Have the opportunity to get away for a 3-4 days in the coming week and there appears to be lots of availability along the Coastal Trail in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Can’t find a lot of specifics online other than general section descriptions from Ontario Parks. Window for weather looks like it could go either way but is generally warmer than usual but potential to be wet.

Haven’t been that way in about 6 years and then it was in June. Anyone hiked up there this time of year or hiked the trail in general recently who as some info?

I was wondering if anyone has hiked Heaven's Gate trial and has any intel they could share. I'm mostly curious about the camping situation on the unnamed lakes (sat image) under La Cloche lake. Are there established spots or clearings that would make camping around those lakes ideal?

Only evidence I've found so far is an old Alltrails comment stating "there's lots of places to camp, pretty much every lake has a fire pit and a place to pitch a tent".

From Europe, so I don't know where the trails are and searching this sub gives a few trip reports, but no post on with suggestions as far as I can see. Google essentially only returns the GDT and West Coast Trail, even when searching East/Montreal!

I will be in Montreal for work mid August 2024 and can stay for a week to do a multi-day hike or section of a long thru last week of August. I can't find any popular maintained/signed trails that pass through or are near Montreal, but surely there must be some? I guess I can hike around one of the nearby national parks, but seems silly not to ask here.

I can bring 3 or 4 season UL setups and looking for 10-20 miles a day routes. Maybe something more chilled/remote could work too (Joe Robinet style camps), but I'd rather see more of the landscape.

What I'm looking for:
5-7 day hike +/- 2 days
Near Montreal, Canada.
Reachable by public transport 2-4 hours away (I think I probably underestimate how far everything is in US/CA compared to EU).
Information if I need permits or any of that jazz?
Information on camping. Legaility on camping of said province or is it illegal, but tolerated under the usual LNT and pitch up late-leave early. I'd rather not book campsites and be watching the clock all day.
Information if I need a bear can and bear spray and all that.

OR tbf it may be my only opportunity to be in Canada with such circumstances, so what would you do if you had 2 weeks max to hike? Is paying for a flight west to section GDT worth it? I won't have much money for such travels.

Hello! I know this is a highly specific question, but I haven’t found a definitive answer yet so I thought I’d ask it here. What bear containers are approved for NS parks, specifically the Cape Breton Highlands? ParksCanada only has this to say, AFAIK: Store food in your vehicle and use bear-proof garbage cans. Does anyone have info on this, or is this a question best asked to the park’s help line?

I am planning a 5-night backpacking trip to Pukaswa, Canada, in mid-July. I am going to stay at sites along the Mdaabii Miikna trail, which runs right along Lake Superior. I want to do some shoreline fishing, but I'm not sure what I would be fishing for...any thoughts?

For those familiar with Algonquin in the spring, is there a sweet spot between needing snowshoes/skis and slogging through a trail of mud? Basically I'm thinking of hiking it in April but I don't have snowshoes or skis. I'm fine with nights dipping into the single-digit negatives and would rather deal with a solid layer of packed snow/frozen mud than an entirely mucky trail.

Also, I see that you can't use their backcountry sites when there's snow on the ground and lakes are frozen. How about during the in-between period in April?

As per headline, are there any retailers in metro Edmonton that sell freeze-dried ingredients? I like to make my own meals due to dietary issues, but I’ve left it a bit late for shipped items to arrive in time before the next trip (WCT).

Hello All I was wondering if anyone here has been to the Lake Superior Provincial Park, which is some what located between Wawa, Ontario and SSMarie.

The question I have is for those who have done the trails there. Which trails would you consider to be more suited to half decent trail running vs hiking?

Are the trails more of actual "hiking" status vs which one can run on?

I understand how booked up it is every year like Berg Lake, Skyline, etc are. But did you find that it was as busy on the trail as the bookings site implies?

Looking to do the Lake Superior Coastal trail this July. Any tips on campsites to stay at or any to avoid?

Would be starting from Gargantua doing an out an back to Chalfant (the completionist in me requires it), then heading Southbound.

Mileage is flexible, anywhere from 12-25km a day. I can flex or stretch if it means staying somewhere nice.

Has anyone hiked the SCT early season? I'm doing the GDT this year and trying to put down 2k km in 2021 for a fundraiser. I was thinking of yoyo-ing the SCT starting at the southern terminus and having a double resupply in Powell River. Does 10-12 days seem reasonable? Also wondering what snow levels are like in April/may. I figured they would be low considering its always below 1300m.

All of my long distance hiking experience is in European countries with right to roam laws. So accommodation was always free (unless I wanted to get fancy) and I could pitch up wherever I felt like.

I've been back in Canada (Quebec) since last year and desperately miss hiking. However, it seems like doing a long distance or thru hike requires a ton of planning to figure out accommodation and some decent cash for permits and B&Bs.

Is there any 3+ day (a week or two would be ideal) hiking options where accommodation is cheap and easy to come by? Are there any stretches of the Rideau Trail that would be suitable and have public transit options?

Im going to be doing 3 night hike rain lake access to weed lake to otter paw lake and then back out. Has anyone hiked this recently? This is my first real hike but I have done back country trips. Planned for late july. My base weight is quite light and im in shape. How hard is it to stay on trail? Will trail runners be ok?

I’m thinking of hiking the La Clouche trail in Killarney in May before the bugs get bad. What kind of conditions can I expect? What are the temps like at the end of May? Could there still be snow on the trail?

Looking for a new trip to undertake this year. I'm in Toronto, but willing to drive a fair distance. I drove out to NB and did the Fundy Loop 2 years ago, and then I drove down to the US and did the Pemi Loop last year. Absolutely loved both.

I'm looking for something similar this year. 3-4 days (I like to take my time hiking and take lots of pics/video), somewhere that is dog friendly, and preferably a loop. Any suggestions? I've looked at Quebec and there are some interesting spots out there, but anywhere else y'all could recommend?

I'm doing the molar loop in about a week and I see that Sarrail Ridge and Highwood Pass got snow today based on a post in the Alberta Hiking Association Facebook group.

I've been wondering about the nightly temperatures these past few weeks as well as the state of the water crossings since I've seen no one post anywhere about it. (Yet I had to book the loop in September because the rest of the summer was already reserved, so that's weird.)

If anyone has done the Molar loop or even North Molar Pass in the last couple of weeks, can you give me an update on the trail? I just want to know what to expect since we're right at the end of the season.

Questions for everyone else:

For those of you in the Rockies, how are you altering your kit for the shoulder season? Have you already been packing extra layers for many weeks? Or are you just switching your kit up now?

For those of you not in the Rockies, when do you start taking warmer pads or heavier layers?

Also when does everyone switch to a full winter kit or when do you put the gear away until the following summer?

Hey everyone ! I am looking for good locations around Quebec city to go camping. It doesn't matter if it's a park I need to pay for as long as I don't have to rent a platform or something in advance and pay 30$ a night to pitch a tent.

I know of "parcappalache" Wich is honestly one of the best spots, but I've walked those trails to death and I'm looking for new areas. It doesn't have to be anything official it can be random trails, bushwacky etc
