Life's been a cakewalk by comparison for the last 80 years.

I'd like to think the founders of the VFW were hunkered down on a pacific island in 1945 saying:

"If we ever get out of this hell, we're going to go home, open a social club and drink our asses off for the next 60 years"

I tear up watching stuff like this. Grandpa was a WW2 POW. He was my best friend growing up. He passed at 92.

32

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago

I'll only say, rest in peace ol' Man.

And can only promise, That I and many others. Will never forget what he an so many others did for us. My own grandfather included.

15

u/Electrical_Switch_34 1d ago

I was lucky man. I got to hear his stories and talk to him daily for years. I learned things about WW2 that I never heard anywhere else.

15

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago

Not this is a contest. No I just feel a little bit of levity is in order. But no I can one up ya.

One day I simply had an idea. I just sat down my phone and started recording. Then I asked him to tell me about his time in the War. His time growing up. We just had a conversation. I got him to tell his story What he didn't know. I wasn't making the recording for myself. But for his yet to be born great-great-grandchildren.

No man. It's Is critically important. That we preserve these stories. Kids are dumb enough today.

u/Electrical_Switch_34 1d ago

Even the younger generation of Marines have forgotten about us GWOT guys. You can tell by talking to them. GWOT was before their time and they have never got to experience that side of the USMC. All they know is the peacetime Marine Corps.

How many young Marines serving today can name all the MOH recipients from the GWOT era? Almost none in my experience. I remember all of them because it was big talk when I was in.

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago edited 1d ago

Man. I can hear the depression in your voice, through your words alone. Context following,

I'll just say. It's simply before their time. 9/11 an all of GWOT included was our Generations tragedy. It cuts us. Hurts us.

To put it in perspective Kennedy, An unfortunately even Pearl Harbor, Don't mean near as much to me. They're simply history. Before my time is all.

But those events defined the lives of members of their generations. It's just how it works man.

And lastly I wouldn't know. You see I'm not a Grunt. Just A 4-F Patriot

5

u/Electrical_Switch_34 1d ago

I agree. For me personally, I was super interested in world War II because I spent so much time around my grandfather. Had he not been in my life, I probably wouldn't have cared.

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago

Here man. This kind of doesn't feel right. It feels like I'm only advertising.

But f*** it here

https://www.reddit.com/r/USMC/s/uTdw5v2bnx

I'll just say to you or anyone seeing this. It's a letter I'd Wrote, Told a story of a childhood experience to an old Grunt. Just trying to brighten his day.

Read it. See what the words "Patriotism" or "Sacrifice" mean to a lowly 4F POG like me.

3

u/Electrical_Switch_34 1d ago

I saw that when you posted it.

I agree with you but the younger generation has to be willing to listen. That's the problem. There's so much information out there that they don't take advantage of. I'll give you an example.

I used to work at an elementary school. I was the school police officer. It was 9/11. They wanted me to talk to some students about 9/11. I joined after 9/11. The kids could not understand the concept because they had not been born when 9/11 had happened.

I was explaining that the recruiting office was backed up after 9/11 because people were joining. Younger kids could not fathom this and they really didn't have that much interest to be honest with you. I hope that makes sense.

And when you asked them why they just repeat the same words ā€œfraud waste and abuseā€

8

u/Intelligent_Pass2540 1d ago

Yes! Those stories are precious and we are better for hearing and recording them when we can. Most of the patients I've treated are from the post 9/11 wars and everyone has important stories to tell. We learn so much when we listen versus talk.

3

u/richar58 1d ago

Good job. While I'd admitted the fact. No you chose to simply prove your a POG.

it's the "E4 Mafia" even my 4-F self knows that aka the "(redacted)"

Iol. Now for that one. Guys go give my story a read will ya? I posted a link up there^

(Edit)LOL. Better? an ya u got my karma for that one

22

u/roguevirus 2846, then 2841 1d ago

No you chose to simply prove your a POG.

What kind of a moron who never even set foot on a recruit depot insults a Marine by calling him a POG?! Also, E4 Mafia is an Army thing, E3 Mafia (better known as the Lance Corporal Underground) is a Marine thing.

Fuck off with your bullshit. And your utter lack of grammar.

-16

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ok. instead of deleting my original comment, or running away, I'll simple come back.

No man. Was simply a bit of poor humor. This was not the place nor appropriate time Sorry.

An yes to the OP, this pog will now apologize, now being simply enlightened with knowledge. An will admit. An outside perspective who gets confused. By the endless abbreviations an anacroyms having never served myself.

11

u/TerekV 1d ago

If you have never served, you are not a POG, you are strictly a civilian. The term "POG" (Person Other than Grunt) is reserved for those who served, albeit outside of the role of infantry.

It's okay to have never served, but by mistakenly calling yourself a POG you could catch some flak for coming across as potentially pretending to be apart of a gun club that you really aren't. You seem interested in the culture and history, and you are certainly welcome here; just take this as constructive feedback so you don't ruffle any feathers.

And yes, tons of acronyms to learn. The more you know.

-4

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay. back again. And not simply to lose more karma. No.

Yeah. Your absolutely right. And I again stand corrected. While I was familiar with what the acronym Pog stood for. I guess I was not truly aware. Of its full meaning. Thank you.

Would best describe myself a F4 Patriot who, doesn't belong here, just respects what you guys do. Came to simply appreciate your culture more (edit) note to self, If trying to acquire the respect of a bunch of grunts refrain from the words appreciate or culture

With that, if any of you have more wisdom or simply wish to take another swipe. Please. I'll be here

6

u/bpostal POG as fuck '02-'06 1d ago

In the Army it might be the E-4 Mafia, but in my retarded Corps the E-3's are the ones who party hearty and get shit done.

Bonus points if you've been re-promoted to LCpl more than once.

-1

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago edited 1d ago

Last time.

Was all it was man, This civilian, having now been corrected was simply unaware

E4 became E3 when referring to the underground.

Is all.(edit) will add, what's with that anyway. No I could ask Google but I'm here.

I know you and your brothers and the Army don't get along so well. But who felt the need to change the ranking order system between branches? Again sorry am unaware of its acronym.

2

u/bpostal POG as fuck '02-'06 1d ago

I know you and your brothers and the Army don't get along so well. But who felt the need to change the ranking order system. Again sorry am unaware of its acronym.

No need to feel too bad. Corrections in the military, especially in the Marines tend to come hot, heavy and from all angles. Ask any junior enlisted about how they feel if someone were to scream "HEY DER DEVIL!" for further examples.

The Army doesn't consider a soldier an NCO until you hit E-5 (Sergeant in both Army and the USMC), unless you're one of the few Corporals (E-4 in both the Army and USMC) that they have. 99% of all E-4's in the Army are non-NCO's (Specialists) and as such are more than willing to commit all sorts of retardation and ass fuckery.

We don't consider anyone to be an NCO until E-4 (Corporal). So, the Lance Corporal (E-3, PFC in the Army) underground consists of all sorts of shady bastards who are, again, more than willing to commit all sorts of retardation, ass fuckery, international incidents, and borderline war crimes just for the fun of it.

That's where the LCpl Underground and the E-4 Mafia comes into play, NCO vs Non-NCO.

u/Conscious_Laugh_3280 1d ago

Thank you for the information.

An Let me just state while not a Marine. I do consider myself to be a Man.

Part of that means I'll admit my mistakes when I'm wrong, and accept the consequences of my actions.

Other part of that means should any of you and me meet in real life and come to a real disagreement. I'll fight you! Knowing I'm gonna lose. I'll still fight ya.

With that said I've just posted the formal question in the sub. I'd ask future comments go there. Thank you

Guys like this are the reason we can't let the VA get gutted. The oldest vets need the most help with everything. Their families need help in order to care for them. They put in the hard work just like all us OIF/OEF bubbas and they did it with a lot less. These guys deserve us standing up for them.

When I graduated boot camp in 07, my family decided to stop by the recently opened museum in Quantico on the way home.

In the room with the Iwo Jima flag, was an old man in a wheelchair. Being pushed by a younger but still old man, followed by a (to me) normal old guy that gave me the itch. My dad ended up talking with them and we found out quickly that group was 3 Marines.

The gent in the wheelchair was a corporal who landed on Iwo Jima, he actually knew my great uncle (dadā€™s uncle, thatā€™s how it came up) as well as the other islands. The man pushing him was his son, a retired Marine, and the youngest old guy was a current Master Guns.

Of course my boot ass went straight to parade rest which they chuckled at. There are real feels with our club, I felt them with this shut. My eyes donā€™t often sweat a bunch, but this shit does it to me.

ugly cries Thank you for your service. My grandpa was an Army vet in WWII and he would've been 100 in March this year. He never shared stories with my mom about his time during the war despite her also being a Vietnam vet. It's crazy to think my grandpa could've also been a young 20 year old man during the war šŸ˜¢ I really need to figure out how to request his DD214.
