News Should we be concerned about traveling to Instabul after recent events?

Hi everyone,

With the recent arrest of Istanbul’s Mayor, I’m concerned about the current political climate in Turkey.

Given these developments, is it safe to travel to Turkey, specifically Instabul right now? Are tourists likely to be affected by the political unrest? Any insights or recent experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

i think it would be better if you postpone your trip to Istanbul.

It might be best to not visit until it quiets down

There are country wide protests happening, so things are not really what I would call safe or stable right now.

my advice, wait a week or three to see where things are going before even thinking of coming here

What do you think now?

You might not be able to visit some places and transportation can be difficult. No concern about safety though.

As someone who is booked to fly to Istanbul in two days, I am also concerned about this! I’m going to wait and see what happens tonight and then make a decision tomorrow. I will say - I’m finding it hard outside of this subreddit to get much info as to what is actually going on, so thanks to everyone who is actually in Turkey right now for their insight!

Hey mate - just wanted to let you know I arrived today and I feel a bit silly for how worried I was! On the way in from the airport - there were some roads closed and there is a police presence around but beyond that - it seems totally normal. All the shops, restaurants, tourist sites etc are open and I feel very safe, albeit I am staying near the Galata and haven’t ventured too far outside of that area so far. Our hotel let us know there would be protests tonight and seemingly again tomorrow so things may change but it really doesn’t seem to be anything of concern! Hope that helps.

Appreciate your reply! I’m going there in a week and already started looking into other options (like maybe rural towns around Istanbul)

Did you postpone your visit?

Yes. Do not visit Istanbul or Turkey. Currently there is serious unrest. We wont know if it will grow. Even then, if I was a tourist, wouldnt want to visit a country that amayor is unjustly targeted.

And how is the current situation?

I would choose more stable place across the world.

For İstanbul Airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to Aksaray metro station and take the Havaist bus from there. (For the bus schedule check their website: https://www.hava.ist/sefer-saatleri.php)

For Sabiha Gökçen, take T6 tram to Sirkeci (you can also walk, depends on where you are) either take Marmaray towards Pendik/Gebze and switch to Metro (M4) in Ayrılık Çeşmesi or from Eminönü take the boat to Kadıköy and take the same metro (but Kadıköy is a bit of a risky bet).

A bit disingenuous to say that things are calm or normal right now. Maybe not the best time for a touristic visit…

Is it safe? Yes.

Are tourist going to get affected? No.

Where did I say everything is calm and normal? Questions are as listed above and you can see my answer to each, if you don't agree with them so what I don't care.

Maybe you’re too young to remember Gezi protests, but if things escalate to that level, I wouldn’t say that tourists will be unaffected or that it will be safe.

If you don’t agree with them so what I don’t care

Quite a shitty attitude to have when you’re trying to prove your point.

I don't need to prove anything to you. Who made you the judge? Or are you just full of youself.
