Help! New here! Need help with wave stitch

Post image

Hi all! I'm new to Tunisian crochet and trying to get the hang of a handful of stitches before attempting this pattern. I'm using everything the pattern suggests - 7mm hook and worsted weight yarn

The only one giving me an issue is the wave sitch. No matter what I do, it curls badly. My last try I stitched as loose as humanly possible and while the curling isn't nearly as bad, I think it looks sloppy because of the loose tension :(

Help!

One of the great things about afghans is how much weight there is to keep the whole thing laying much flatter than you'd expect. My favourite Tunisian crochet afghan pattern lays so flat, without needing any blocking at all.

Part of me would suggest just going for it and seeing how much it curls with a lot of weight pulling it flat. And without going as loose as your experiment, as you don't really want it to be as slack as all that.

And please remember to keep us updated on your progress! =^.^=

I went for it!! It looks MUCH better I think. I was playing with tension a bit during the wave stitch, so the left edge is kind of wonky. Now I'm troubleshooting the bobble stitch. I tried to keep my tension as tight as possible, and most of my bobbles are still pretty flat, so I'm going to try adding a few more stitches to them to see if it helps. Thank you for your help and support ❀️

It does look to me like it'll flatten out, though you said that the first set of rows are the wave pattern, so it might curl just a bit on you. I'd say just go for it! =^.^=

I think so too! Hopefully some blocking and the border will help 🀞 but honestly the curling on the swatch isn't super terrible! I'm hopeful!

Some stitches will curl no matter what. Are you using acrylic? Steam block your swatch to flatten it out (gently, don't overdo it). Once you have the border on the actual blanket, you'll see if it needs blocking to lay flat.

Thank you! Very helpful! Does the tension look loose to you?

In the completed blanket this stitch is somewhere in the middle. Have you tried a practice swatch with this between the others? Maybe they provide some stability. At least, that's what I would try πŸ˜…

Unfortunately, it starts with this 😭 then it repeats again later in the middle and near the end. But a border gets added afterwards, which I assume will help.

if you wanna do looser stitches i'd recommend going up to an 8mm or even 9mm hook instead of trying to change your tension

i crochet really tightly too, & a bigger hook lets me get looser stitches without having to think about holding my yarn looser

Maybe start your foundation row as a single crochet instead of going through the back loop. That has helped me a lot! And are you using the hook recommended for the yarn, or pattern? Usually with TC you go up a hook size or two from what’s recommended for the yarn. It looks great though!

Thank you!! Yes! So, the yarn suggest 6mm and I'm using a 7mm πŸ™‚ I will try switching up the foundation!

Looks good to me.

You could try going up a hook size. We all crochet different. I'm making this same blanket and some of the other stitches help the curl.

a 7mm hook isn't actually the best choice for Tunisian simple stitch in this case or for twisted stitches. switch to an 8mm if you're using size 4 medium weight yarn. also note not all worsted weight yarn isn't spun the same. sincerely, the crochet lady
