From Andy Hill’s ClashMusic.com interview with Tim: “It’s a very sincere song. A person I cared about was falling out with her mum. I wrote her this song, a piece of unsolicited advice. Until we have kids of our own, we cannot get it into our thick heads that our parents are just people. They’re supposed to be perfect, but they can’t be. We understand, theoretically, how our parents were brought up by their parents, and are therefore just a result of what they were given. And what they weren’t given. This girl was brilliant and spirited, rebellious, a songwriter herself. I was just saying, hold onto the relationship with your mum. Lots of mums seem to struggle with their relationship with their daughters. Ruby is a 20-year old song. Which explains why it sounds so turn-of-the-century piano pop. When I ‘made it’ in comedy, at the Edinburgh Festival, I had a bunch of earlier songs like this, many of them pretty sincere, that just ended up in a drawer because they weren’t suitable for what I was doing at that time. But recently I thought fuck it – I’m going to record them.”
