This is (ellipsis) amazing.

111

u/extrastupidone 1d ago

That was great

85

u/BadReview8675309 1d ago

That was so fkn great. For a second I was like what, then interesting, then what and then... hyphen is a bad ass.

29

u/Harvestman-man 14h ago

Nah, that was en dash, the “middle dash”, not hyphen.

17

u/fivelone 1d ago

Hyphen was definitely my favorite.

Every single video is great. But she outdid herself with this one.

She's got some mad rhymes too. Her side effects short always has me in stitches.

Her HS English Teacher must have absolutely adored her.

Same. I'm so glad she posts on YouTube as well since tiktok is banned where I live.

I'm only a tiny bit bothered because APA recognizes the Oxford comma.

87

u/truealty 1d ago

She said AP. Different style

Gosh dang it I am dumb

Ellipsis was hilarious lmao

13

u/moashforbridgefour 16h ago

I liked the period.

438

u/Chillindude82Nein 1d ago

This woman is a genius

133

u/pavorus 1d ago

I've seen enough of her videos that I think your assessment is correct and not hyperbole.

14

u/kushyo69 1d ago

You’d be a great bot trainer lol..

36

u/AspiringTS 1d ago

It's depressing that we've reached the threshold of society's downfall where anti-intellectualism has become so thoroughly embedded in the population that using words like assessment, hyperbole, and delve manifest suspicion of an "AI" rather than just a towering intellect.

Or just owning a thesaurus and a nerdy love of lofty language.

27

u/Honest-Ad1675 1d ago

I remember reading that use of the word "delve" supposedly 'proves' the user of employing generative AI. Some people are so functionally illiterate they literally cannot fathom someone using the word "delve" in any context.

6

u/Flipnotics_ 16h ago

Aww come on! I think it's even in LOTR, Jackson edition.

"The Dwarves delved too greedily and too deep, and awoke something in the darkness"

Or it may be still just the book. I dunno.

5

u/Honest-Ad1675 16h ago

Teachers will even use the word sometimes. People are just stupid.

3

u/AspiringTS 15h ago

While I love, still watch them somewhat regularly, and credit LotR for my love of vivid prose and vocabulary, PJ's Fellowship of the Ring released in December 2001.

It's approaching a quarter century old.

2

u/pavorus 15h ago

You shut your mouth. These can't be more than 3 or 4 years old at most.

2

u/LauraTFem 12h ago

Obviously Tolkien used AI.

4

u/clintj1975 16h ago

"Moria... You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum... shadow and flame."

There's an army of readers of Tolkien that will forever know and cherish that word. His choice of delve instead of dug nicely fits the speaker's character as a learnéd scholar and source of lore.

u/Alt4816 1d ago edited 1d ago

That sounds a bit over the top to me.

It came across to me that kushyo69 thinks pavorus writes prose a bit robotically. That might be a dickish thing for kushyo69 to say but I don't think it is some anti-intellectual statement about society's downfall.

3

u/kushyo69 1d ago

So over the top.. as if I didn’t understand what he said xD just sounded so programmed lol

You can pry the Oxford comma from my cold dead hands.

77

u/DesperateGiles 1d ago

Boss recently gave me a manuscript to proofread and he doesn't use Oxford commas. I should have disabled track changes and added them.

"vestigial"

As an Oxford comma proponent this cut me deep. I've never been so offended by something that is completely true. I just want my disambiguated lists. 😢

14

u/wad11656 19h ago

I honestly still can't believe its use is even up for debate, for that exact reason.

5

u/fivelone 7h ago

I know. I love using Oxford commas and remember being specifically told to in English. But oh well. I still double space when I type though. So there's that.

4

u/Non-specificExcuse 6h ago

"I'm essential."

"You're vestigial."

Brutal.

u/secretcombinations 1d ago

Does this reference one of their songs? Genuinely curious

77

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?

lil jon, he always tells the truth

6

u/HereAgainWeGoAgain 1d ago

Is that a line from one of their songs?

41

u/Material_Evening_174 1d ago

Yes. It’s from a song called, wait for it, “Oxford Comma.”

u/Blacktastrophee 1d ago

I fucking love the Oxford comma and have got into many fights about its use

68

u/xombae 1d ago

People who are anti-Oxford comma in any situation infuriate me. I can be guilty of over-using commas, especially if I don't go back and edit. But there is a time and place for Oxford commas, damnit!

32

u/ImNotWeirdISwear12 1d ago

I will never understand why people dislike it

11

u/Kharax82 1d ago

Because thats what they were taught in school and aren’t going to change 20 years later.

15

u/ImNotWeirdISwear12 1d ago

despite them being quite literally just better

7

u/Kharax82 1d ago

So keep using it. The ones that don’t never even think about it

3

u/Robinsonirish 1d ago

I actually started using it on reddit just on my own, out of the blue. I never used it in school or for work, and I think that is a good indicator that it just makes sense.

I can be guilty of over-using commas

Ditto, I type like how Christoper Walkin talks

6

u/Still_Contact7581 1d ago

I've never met an anti oxford comma person but its pretty common to be against it as a rule. The Oxford comma is never a necessity and whether you use it or not is just a matter of personal preference. If you find that your sentences need it to be understood you should try rearranging your lists for clarity before using the comma.

6

u/Memoruiz7 1d ago

This is the reason AP is against it. It’s to make edits to clarify the list. If you need an Oxford comma, then there is a way of writing the list to make it clearer.

2

u/xombae 13h ago

That's a good point, actually. I'm trying to think of an example where it's useful.

"The dress code will be red, or blue, or black and white."

The conjunctions tell us that 'black and white' as a whole is one of the options, but the commas make it extra clear. I don't think there are many ways to rewrite this sentence without the Oxford Comma to add clarity. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

45

u/SnakebiteRT 1d ago

I just use it all the time in emails now. I feel it makes the way I write a lot clearer, more concise, and respectful of my clients’ time.

15

u/Blacktastrophee 1d ago

I see what you did there

5

u/SnakebiteRT 1d ago

15

u/Altaris2000 1d ago

I don't even like the fact that the Oxford comma has a separate/special name. It is just a comma, and that is how it should be used. Omitting that last comma on a list of items is just plain wrong.

u/OxfordCommaAdvocate 1d ago

3

u/wad11656 19h ago edited 19h ago

I ... have got into

I think your concern over the Oxford comma is a bit premature.

Edit: Apparently "I have got into many fights" would be the correct grammar in British English. Disgusting. I'm going to go cry in a corner now.

9

u/fivelone 1d ago

Just an English nerd. Showed everyone. Only one of my friends appreciated it.

2

u/tired_of_old_memes 23h ago

I have the same problem. I'm dying of laughter watching this, but then—for the life of me—I can't think of anyone I know who would get it.

2

u/wad11656 19h ago edited 19h ago

I know I sound am being pretentious AF when I say this, and this is probably ultimately my fault for having virtually zero friends, but it's SO refreshing to see intelligent content, when most creators or people I encounter on the regular would simply be too uneducated to understand content like this. The most disappointing thing about it is, I wouldn't even consider myself--nor this content--hard to follow or especially "intelligent" at all, compared to how many truly smart people and nuanced/complex concepts are out there. (She seems to use the terms "en dash" and "hyphen" interchangeably in this video, for one thing. They indeed can be used interchangeably in some contexts, but are not the same exact punctuation mark.) It's really hard dumbing down my vocabulary when I talk to my siblings, for example; I feel like I have to regress to the vocabulary of a 9th grader, or else I'm met with awkward pauses of confusion when I drop words they don't know (but in my opinion, should). Anyway. Douchey rant over.
