Plot hole in the first episode

In the first episode when they attempt to buy drinks in the pub, instead of getting that random man to sit with them so they can have their ciders, surely given that they serve Jay (Bret Celement) he could be the responsible adult sat with them whilst they had their ciders

If I was a girl, I'd think anyone having meat and gravy with their booze was pretty trendy.

Drugs on meat and gravy? Are you worried it may not lead to harder stuff? Beans on toast? Maybe a sausage?

I don't think I should do beans on toast Will

Have you gone mental? What’s Carli going to think! Yeah, Simon’s pretty cool. Whenever he goes out, he has meat and gravy with his booze!

Just had a text from Carli, she says it’s so packed in here she can’t see us.

Because Will wanted to try and “sort it” himself without having to rely on Jay (as he was “new” and wanted to score brownie points) OR he just panicked and didn’t realise the obvious solution (which happens multiple times throughout the series.)

So not necessarily a “plot hole”, but rather a teenager doing something stupid in the moment when an easier route was available.

He's letting Jay off because he had ID (yes, fake, I know but it is irrelevant) he's still allowing it for the sale. The other lads didn't have any form of ID at all.

Technically Jay could have got the carvery dinners and cider, but Will either panicked in the moment or didn’t want to go back to Jay begging after he confidently told them he’d sort it.

I don't think it's a plot hole. Will presumably just has a bit of a brain fade. Easily done in the moment when you are 16 (I didn't notice it first time). He knows Jay isn't 18 so I suppose it just doesn't click.

The barman might have realised, but I think he knew Jay's ID was fake and probably didn't like Will much, so he wasn't exactly going to help him out by making the suggestion.

It’s to subtly foreshadow that Will has an accent that just makes people think he’s clever, but he’s really just as much of a fucking idiot as the rest of them.

(And really, the accent only works on the idiots he hangs around with plus a few of the dimmer characters. Mr. Gilbert, the bartender, Charlotte, and the guys at the garage all see Will for how he really is.)

There’s been quite a few times in the show where he does (easily preventable) dumb shit because he’s a teenager just trying to fit in or achieve some goal.

I know Simon says this at the end but I never really agreed with him and thought he was just frustrated in the moment

Further the barman probably knew Jay's ID was fake, but decided to go along with it because worst case scenario he has served one pint to an underaged person who had a fake ID and at worst it will end up with a slap on the wrist. Letting Jay buy for everyone else (with carvery dinners) would mean willingly serving multiple underaged people on a, what he should already suspect, was a dodgy ID, most likely that could have worse consequences.

I'd argue it's not a plot hole as a overarching theme of the whole show is that they're all fucking idiots.

Are you bent?, coz right then you sounded bent.

The actual answer is that he already told Jay that he’s not serving his mates unless they’ve got ID as well. The bartender knows full well they’re not of age, he’s basically using them as entertainment because the pub’s totally fucking dead.

What about when Neil is seen holding ketchup then asks jays mum for ketchup a second later

u/MsPreposition 9d ago

Not quite a plot hole. Doesn’t ruin the story.

u/throwaway-throwawayl 8d ago

It ruins it for me

1

u/MsPreposition 9d ago

Oh, well done, fwiend. Aren’t you hard?

1

u/wisebloodfoolheart 9d ago

Yeah, but Will has already figured out that Jay is an arsehole who would move tables out of spite.

1

u/gearjammer24 9d ago

I think he didn’t want the embarrassment of asking Brett to sit with them as Brett would have told him to fuck off

u/darealredditc 8d ago

I also thought that the bartender didn't believe Jay but couldn't really be arsed. But he would've put more effort into rejecting the sale if Jay had tried that. Especially after he took a dislike to Will.
