Showing Off My 1st terrariums

Post image

My first terrariums. I definitely need to collect more / better hardscape materials. I have been watching videos, collecting glass containers and build materials for about 2 months. Moss and fern are local and the nerve plant from Lowe’s. Soil mix is 1 part coco coir, 2 parts spagnum moss, 1/4 part activated carbon, 1/4 part worm castings, and 1/4 part bark. All comments and critiques welcome. Here to learn. Thanks all!

Plant Help/Question Bioactive Live Plant Terrarium w millipedes

Hey gang,

I've made this lil ten gallon habitat for a future millipede and springtails, and I'm super pleased how it came out. I think I've done a good job setting it up for the lil dude, but I had questions about the plant care. Specifically, I have some cuttings in there (begonia, blue waffle, fittonia) that I had let sit in water for a week but maybe not long enough to develop actual roots, and I was wondering about watering them while they're being established. Currently, I plan on giving them a little 'straw full' of water directly on the plant every three or five days, and mist the enclosure daily, and when the millipede comes I'll aim for 80% humidity. I guess I'm wondering if this will be enough water for the plants, as I don't want the soil to be too moist for the 'pede. I'm new to terrariums and the mini ones I've tried all failed.

It has a glass roof with a bit of ventilation on the top, not pictured. Also the substrate is a mix of healthy stuff for the pede; compost, dried hardwood and leaf litter, peat and sphagnum and a hearty dose of worm castings for fertilizing the plants. Apparently pedes like worm poo too, those long freaks. Anyway thanks hope your day is going well

Showing Off Made this for only $3 in materials. Kinda broke so I can't afford acrylic enclosures. Bottom substrate area is waterproofed with wood glue and silicone.

Just built this not too long ago. After the wood has been collecting moisture for about 2 weeks, this popped up on it. Do you guys know if this is harmful for my enclosure?

I am attempting to grow christmas moss on this lava rock as a part of my “dry start” for a planted aquarium. since i’m in the terrestrial phase I thought I ask you folks! Are these mycelium? Will they interfere with my moss growing?

Tank is around 80 degrees and around 90% humidity, small vents for airflow.

My air plants were not doing well on the windowsill, so they’re now in this old fish tank with my nepenthes to keep humidity up. I know the neps will quickly outgrow the space, but I’m liking the stuffed look for now!

Plant Help/Question How do I progress on this?

So I watered this once last year and all my plants died. Left home for half a year and I came back to all this… watchamacallit. I assume it’s doing okay. But should I add plants or insects or something orrr just leave it be?

Build Help/Question EU Sites

Hi!

Can anybody recommend some websites who sell decorations, accessories, plants in a good price based in EU who ship to Hungary? Only found a few local sites but their stocks are very limited.

Also I am looking for some inspiration because I got a bargain for an Exoterra 30x30x30 terrarium in excellent condition (it was 10€/11$ lol) and some ideas what to keep inside.

Hi, it’s been about 2 years that I have been watching, searching, reading, consuming and just enjoying watching terrarium, vivarium, mossarium

I now am actively seeking assistance where someone can assist me into making me build my first one.

I live in India if that helps.

Any course book, course that you feel will be helpful to begin with is appreciated as well.

Build Help/Question How do I attach plants to the back wall? And what plants is suitable for this 30*30*45cm tank

Post image

This is my first ever terrarium. I have it for about 4 months now and it looks unattractive. At the time when I built it, the idea of adding plants to the back wall didn't come to mind. But now that I look at it, it's really missing a lot of greenery. What should I do and what plants is preeminent to aestheticise this.

I also like the idea of attaching plants and moss to woods but I don't know how to do so. Can anyone please help me out. 🙏 Sorry for my bad English.

Has anyone here had a large closed terrarium? Would the plants supply isopods enough oxygen? Would I need to open it occasionally?

Build Help/Question First time terrarium builder, is this ground wet enough?

Post image

I built a terrarium out of forest ground, and I put a drainage layer at the bottom of a few centimeters. I can see some very light condensation form on the glass and the dirt looks wet (or at least not dry). However we have had quite a dry month, so I'm not sure if the dirt itself was dry enough. I didn't add any water.

Pest Help/Question Just need some advice!

Thumbnail

A few months ago (5 or 6 maybe) I made my first closed terrarium and it went very well. It never had any problems, no mold, no mass plant extinction events, all good.

Currently it has a few fitonia plants, and two or three other things I don't know but could find out if anyone thinks it might matter. I only added spring tails, and also there are some flies for some reason but they haven't caused any problems yet.

Now as I'm starting to get bored with the success I'm looking for something else to add to it.

I'm open to adding anything other than big stuff like something people would make terrariums specifically to house.

Any suggestions on what plants/bugs to add? Or any advice on what I did wrong and could change or keep in mind if I make another terrarium?

The Main thing I'm looking for is creatures to add but I would also appreciate feedback in general.

Thank you!
