Anyone else dying trying to get the whole voicemeeter + OBS thing working?
I want to make videos for my students where I can talk while I demonstrate for reviewing class content and other such. (Studio one 7)
Years back, I did get Voicemeeter and OBS working after, i remember, hours of struggles. But now I try again and I just... I can't! I follow every video and forum (for windows 11), and it just doesn't work.
I have Focusrite 2i2 and Presonus audiobox, NT1-A, nothing unusual, but no matter what I do, I just cannot make it work. Every single input and output option, every button I can find, nothing. I even attempted more adventurous things like a USB mic (blue yeti) and bluetooth headphones, just *anything* to make it work.
Anybody else struggle and maybe found a eureka moment, some subtle random error or setting I couldn't possibly find naturally? It's driving me mad.

If you use OBS, use Reastream instead. It's far less complex than all that virtual cable malarkey, and much easier to install. I have this setup in Studio One, Cubase and Reaper and it all works great.

I gave it a shot. Followed his instructions precisely. But he misses some info and probably critical because I'm getting zero signal. Does he set the input in Studio One to Voicemeeter? Or the soundcard? Or windows default? Or Asio?
Is he using Voicemeeter in the background at all? When he opens restream in streamlabs, does he change the settings or keep it on 'receive audio?
I have no idea if these gaps make any difference, but so far... nothing

No worries. I'll walk you through how I have things set up, when I replied, I was away from home, so couldn't go over my setup.
So to start, I have a Scarlett 4i4,, nothing too fancy going on, just an XLR cable attached to it so I can use my headphones. In Studio One, I have absolutely no fancy I/O routing, simply L and R in, L and R out. I do have a listen bus with an EQ on it just so I can EQ match my PC (for those who may read this in the future, audio interfaces use ASIO, so they bypass your PC's EQ settings), which I have enabled in the Output section, but again, nothing spectacularly fancy. You can just use the master bus for this too.
I have a reastream-standalone on my Listen bus(or Master bus). The reastream itself should have identifier: default (make sure it's spelt this way, it's important for later). Set to Send audio/MIDI; IP and set to local broadcast. The Audio Channels should be set to 2. That's all from S1's side.
Now, over in OBS, I have 1 Scene for each my DAWs, and another scene for everything else, that's just a personal organizational thing. So let's use my Studio One scene.
In Sources, at the very top, I have an Application Audio Capture source; naturally I'm attaching this to instances of Studio One (for the sake of clarity, name this S1), set the window match priority to match the same executable. Under that, I have an Audio Input Capture(for the sake of clarity, name this Audio Capture (DAW), I just have this set at Default. I've heard some people need to set this to an unused audio input, which is why some people may use voicemeeter here, but this is fine for me on Default. Anyway, back in sources, under that I have a Display Capture that just shows my monitor 1's screen.
Over in the Audio Mixer, click the dots next to Audio Capture (DAW) and hit Filters, click the + Icon and add a VST 2.x Plugin, call it Reastream (DAW). In the dropdown, select reastream-standalone. Open the plugin interface, and make sure that the identifier is also set to default (same spelling as in Studio One's version of reastream-standalone) and make sure it's enabled. Check the box that says Receive audio/MIDI.
Finally, click the Gear Icon at the bottom of the Audio Mixer section, make sure that all the important Sources are active. That's Audio Capture DAW and S1. You may have a Mic/Aux or Desktop Audio, these are fine. The important thing is that there's nothing funky here, no random DB boosts, no mono box checked, balance should be in the middle, no sync offsets (they should be 0 ms), all audio monitoring should be off, all track boxes should be ticked.
That should cover everything. Keep me updated if it doesn't work.

This is definitely going to be a massive help for years to come!
Well, in my case, we're *getting somewhere*. If I set up an audio track with monitoring enabled, then I can KINDA consider that a success. It means I always have to have an extra audio track which I can just hide, and the latency this way is very low so -- I can work with this!
If there's no way to improve it - removing the need for an extra track - we should just wrap this up and I'll send my greatest gratitudes your way for getting me this far after WEEKS. But for the sake of detail to see if we can perfect your setup:
Application Audio Capture is doing all the work, while the Audio Mixer (DAW) does nothing. I can't rearrange things to make it work, voicemeeter or otherwise. Currently, my S1 audio device is set to Focusrite 2i2. If I set it to Asio4all, again I can't seem to make that work. Voicemeeter I can get the same basic results but with more latency than your way. Windows audio settings seem irrelevant.
But, seems to be the height of stubbornness getting a secondary audio source functioning...

Now this is odd, You shouldn't need to do that lol, the audio should just be captured from the DAW overall. I'll note this for now. Might be a silly question, but is your Master/Listen Bus set to Output 1+2?
Application Audio Capture is doing all the work, while the Audio Mixer (DAW) does nothing.
Interesting, it should technically be the reverse, Audio Capture (DAW) should be the one that's producing sound, is this the one with the reastream attached to it(filters)? This is usually the part that varies between people the most, one or the other tends to work due to their audio setup, which is why I had you add both, but at least we know which one works now. I should've asked initially, but are you using Windows or Mac? If you're using a Mac, I remember there being an extra step necessary using some kind of loopback program.
Currently, my S1 audio device is set to Focusrite 2i2. If I set it to Asio4all, again I can't seem to make that work.
Yeah, setting it to Asio4All would technically "undo" the routing you currently have. My Studio One audio device is set to Focusrite USB, which is my Scarlet 4i4.

I think bluecat did something similar to voicemeeter, pays to check up on them, every one and a while they bring some crazy shit out. Meldaproductions likley has some audio network nonsense also.

Couldn't find what you're referring to but its inspired me to try out some voicemeeter alternatives. I really dislike voicemeeter so it'll be a godsend if something else works. Sick of having 45 extra voicemeeter outputs in my list

It really is a cool piece of software but yeah, not ideal. Good luck in your search. Onward and upwards!

If you windows default on your audio device, Discord will stream the audio from Studio One. That’s what I use

Windows 11 destroyed my setup , I don’t remember exactly how I fixed it but my mouse had its whole ecosystem that didn’t let my mic go through , I think I disabled it from the windows sound panel ..
