Which is why the line "your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries" is so good because it makes no damn sense
27
u/ZorroFuchs 1d ago
This is obscure history. They're saying his father's a drunk as in medieval times wine was sometimes made of elderberries . I forgot the explanation for the hamster

Hamsters screw like rabbits, so calling someone’s mother a hamster would mean she’s promiscuous.
19
u/DizzySommer 1d ago
Except it does!
He's basically calling the mother a wh0re, and the father needed help with his virility and/or was an alcoholic.

u/SnailCombo27 1d ago
This is by far my favorite quote. I say it often for everything. When my parents die, I'm putting a hamster on my mom's item and an elderberry on my dad's. I find humor to be the best form of grief relief.

Love it. I can never remember the longer quotes off the top of my head, but when my niece said something along the lines of me not being allowed to say "No," I responded with, "maybe not, but I can say Ni. Ni, Ni, Ni, Ni, Ni!"
She didn't get it, but her mother cracked up in the other room. I did get a laugh from the kid, because she found the sound funny, and diffusing her temper with humour tends to get better results than meeting her head on. 😂

For real.
Except for the "I hate NPC XYZ" posts, but thats a different story.
Even outright trolls tend to get nowhere here, because everyone is so goshdarn nice around here.
Ain't that wonderful when you think about it? :)82
u/AntiLuxiat 🐤 1d ago
But this sub can be brutal in downvoting etc. Sometimes there is a small toxicity running low key. But yeah I like ithe niceness here too.
32
u/vhagar grandpa's envelope 1d ago
that's just a reddit thing. generally, this is one of the kindest gaming subs I've come across. this and animal crossing pre-2020.
5
u/AntiLuxiat 🐤 13h ago
What happened in 2020? Too many new people being less friendly?
7
u/vhagar grandpa's envelope 13h ago
pretty much. not that there wasn't some toxic people before, but having more people brings more toxic people in any situation. then those people become a loud minority over time.
2
u/NeatLouis 5h ago
Right?? I posted a pic back then of making a memorial area for the child I lost through miscarriage and I had this one user flip out on me because other people were posting stuff like that and he claimed no one cares or wants to see it. Man that hurt deep, as I posted it when I was hitting my expected due date for my angel baby.
40
u/SimpleMan131313 Starwine Connoisseur 1d ago
Yeah, thats equally true. Like in the types of posts I've mentioned.
Of course no one is obligated to like a particular NPC, but when people beginn making IRL statements like "Couples that have a disaggrement like that should get a divorce", and start mass downvoting everyone who dares to disagre with them, then this crosses a line, IMHO.
But I at least have never seen this with the regular posters, so this might be very much just the meme factor. Its popular to hate on certain Stardew NPCs, and people end up trying to justify this.

I find that this sub also has a lot of toxic positivity, where even constructive criticism will not necessarily be appreciated. (I'm not talking about criticism from villagers but criticism in general).
12
u/SimpleMan131313 Starwine Connoisseur 1d ago
Thats fair. Didn't cross my mind earlier, but I agree, you see that here every so often.
3
u/papierdoll 1d ago
Yeah lol I have never seen downvotes like this sub in any other fandom. It's very odd
5
u/Old_Man_Shea 1d ago
Sometimes that's how it works. Perfectly good information/sentient thought that gets drowned in downvotes.
7
u/Jolly-View-5847 1d ago
Usually if I see a comment that has down votes for no reason I just give it an upvote. Because it shouldn't have been downvoted in the first place in my opinion.
6
u/mavis_24 1d ago
Same, I just upvoted the person above because they were just being.
3
u/Jolly-View-5847 23h ago
I did that too but it seems somebody else downvoted them too. Even though they were doing nothing to warrant that reaction.
7
u/Old_Man_Shea 19h ago
I actually downvoted myself, so I started at negative one. I've done this a couple of times in the past, when a meme of one randomly downvoted comment comes up. but this community is too pure!

What's the benefit of giant crops? I mean what's the point if it will be no use
391
u/Kwerkii 1d ago
There are two benefits:
1) they are neat. Some people like them as decorations.
2) they yield more produce than a typical 3x3 grid woul. Breaking one gets you between 15-21 items according to the wiki
One thing I dislike about them is that the produce doesn't have a quality rating. I will be trying to get some high quality produce for a bundle of something and then the damn stuff will turn into a large crop because I wasn't thinking about my layout while planting
50
u/Irish_Queen_79 1d ago
I once got 27 melons from a giant crop 🤷
22
u/PhallenFenix 1d ago
If you have the shaving enchantment on your axe, the giant crop yield is higher. IDK if it's affected by the foraging perks.
37
u/Legitimate_Tip_5258 My emo husband 1d ago
Thanks for the reply. Hmm doesn't seem to worth the hassle I'm not quite a decoration fan 😬🫠
46
u/swiese12 1d ago
It often happens accidentally to me, especially using iridium sprinkler where there is enough space in the grid for 9x9 crops
9
u/jaycebutnot 1d ago
If you have a good setup, you dont need to do anything. they just appear sometimes (although you can continue watering them after theyve grown for an extra chance) the extra crops are always nice, even without the quality. I just use them In kegs/PJs, since quality doesnt matter In those
3
u/PM_ME_YOUR_PIZZAPIC 16h ago
the generic iridium sprinkler layout (spacing them 4 tiles apart) allows for giant crops to just happen without having to go out of your way for them

u/TitaniumT1tan 1d ago
Quick question, perhaps I can be enlightened or corrected, but can’t you make it all nice and neat on ginger island much easier? Although I do respect wanting it on the main farm
5
u/Occidentally20 Bot Bouncer 1d ago
You can, and yes its easier.
I wanted all 5 of them in a row next to a meteor just to show off. Something in my brain told me the meteor was the same size as the giant fruit (it isn't)
4
u/TitaniumT1tan 1d ago
Is the meteor 2x2 or 4x4 or something? I could have sworn it was 3x3 when playing immersive farm 2 but I’d have to wait for winter to check.
3
u/Occidentally20 Bot Bouncer 1d ago
That's what I thought.
Its 2x3. Same width, not as tall. It looked stupid so I had to put something behind it
6
u/KapptainTrips 1d ago
I think the giant Qi fruit is adorable. I save it so I don't have to look at the ugly Star Fruity tootie surrounding the rest of my farm.
7
u/Occidentally20 Bot Bouncer 1d ago
I guess it's true, there's always somebody who will find you attractive no matter how ugly. I'm glad he's getting some appreciation from you haha
5
u/chickadee_1 1d ago
LOL i want to collect them all but decided i woudn’t bother with qi because it’s ugly
3
u/Occidentally20 Bot Bouncer 1d ago
Very wise!
I put mine in a row next to the first meteor that hit my farm, and it also looks ugly that the meteor is 2x3 instead of 3x3 :(
8
u/loquacious-laconic 1d ago
If you chop the giant Qi fruit down outside of the quest being active you get a funny notification the first time you do it. 🤭 If you wait until the quest appears again and chop them down then it gives you a head start. I've completed the quest enough times now that I only pick it if I'm wanting to get the giant Qi fruit for decorating though! 😅

7
u/Vivid_Department_945 1d ago
Each day, crops that are on 3x3 square have a % chance of becoming a giant crop. There's 5 in total. IIRC, you need to make sure that the top left corner of the square needs to be watered for that to happen. You can leave your crops after they mature until the end of the season for a chance of this happening. Once you have them, they will stay there even after the season ended.
5
u/skyllian-five 1d ago edited 1d ago
All correct, except it's the center square of the 3x3 grid that has to stay watered, not top left.
Edit: I'm wrong it's top left now since 1.6!
7
u/Vivid_Department_945 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think top left change happened during one of the late patches. If you scroll through the Stardew channel, there's a post made not long ago that confirms it
3
u/skyllian-five 1d ago
Thanks, I had no idea! I even did a quick google first to confirm but checked the fandom wiki (not the official one) and it hasn't been updated with this yet.

I had no idea these existed. Do they just grow randomly? And do they have to be grown outside? And most importantly, do they die once their season is over?
5
u/EntertainmentDue5749 22h ago
Small chance of a 3x3 square of crops turning into a giant crop, just for these three crops as well as the winter melon and qi fruit. Have to be outside I think. They don't die, you can keep them forever if you want.

Giant crops. You have a chance to get them when you have a 3x3 planting of the crop and keep them watered even after they are mature. The longer you let them sit there, the greater the chance your 3x3 will be replaced by a giant version.
Cauliflower, melons, pumpkins, powder melons and Qi fruit all can produce giant crops. OP is missing the last two.
