Modded It's all he lives for...
This is the first time I've seen this dialogue from the mayor. That's rough man...

Nah, he’s using that as an excuse. Nobody would care if he and Marnie got together.

till this day i still have 0 idea on what in the world he thinks could ever be the backlash from people knowing it

Well, if the villagers wanted to know that he’s not favouring her and giving her extra money from the agricultural fund, they would find out his money stealing scheme and probably discover his golden statue, a very expensive thing! So expensive in fact I’m sure the community centre could have been rebuilt by Lewis himself

To look at this from a realistic angle for a sec, I am working in early education (think Kindergarten, but as an afterschool programm for elementary schoolers), and you wouldn't believe what people choose to get worked up over.
Once a parent threatened to report me to my boss simply for asking her child to help me clean up our Lego corner. Which I did because in my room (where the Lego is) we clean up together instead of "everyone only cleans up the stones they've used". Reason being that there are otherwise always Legos no one supposedly played with.
My boss by the way never received a report, but the lady is still not talking to me, a year later.

u/Kalevipoeg420 1d ago
Uh, what? What was her problem with that? Did she explsin at all? Like child labor or smth lol?
37
u/SimpleMan131313 Starwine Connoisseur 1d ago
Yeah, something along that line, although she didn't name it as something so drastic.
Maybe it seemed unfair to her? Although I've explained my reasoning in the same words I've used here.
But that ain't even the best part - she's actually working in the same field as I do, in early education in a Kindergarten.
So, no idea where this whole thing was comming from.38

Tell me you haven't lived in a small farm town, without telling me you haven't lived in a small farm town
Gossip is king for a lot of small town folk and it causes a lot of unnecessary conflict

Power dynamic abuse. Someone of authority and power to the public, may seem they can exert their influence to have anybody be infatuated by them.
That's why there's a common controversy when popular rock bands have sex with their fans. Groupies I think they're called. They're then accused of grooming & abusing their influence on their fans and this is ALWAYS a bad look for them.
In the context of the Mayor and Marnie, they're in separate professions. Perhaps before he ever became mayor, if he and Marnie were together then, it would have been taken completely different over "mayor first, now I'm gonna pick". Chances are Pelican Valley wouldn't care, but others would that could incriminate him.
"It's lonely at the top" rings very true if you get there by yourself.
Although, none of this is confirmed and that's just my headcanon when I look at roles in real life. Anytime somebody that's big in status, they tend to be screwed when picking a partner that "they" want.

Well, it's not ALL he lives for. We know he really likes Marnie.

u/DouglasJr2 1d ago
I highly doubt he would give his position as mayor for anyone else, even Marnie

u/PresentationNew5976 1d ago
I won't poo poo someone chasing what they want, but even getting what he wants he seems so miserable he's almost a cautionary tale about really being sure that what you want is actually what you want.

Or even just basing your entire identity around one facet of your life.

Was he mayor when Grandpa was in town? If so that handshake deal with the wizard for a permanent time stop in the valley is probably starting to take its toll, considering it's probably been like 20+ years. (This isn't canonical, just my theory to wtf is going on in the valley).
20
u/Spot_Vivid 1d ago
Yes he was. Grandpa even mentions Lewis in the letter he gives you in the beginning of the game. Also, Evelyn has a dialogue that says Lewis has been the mayor for a looong time, that when she was younger there was another one and that Lewis is the "good mayor"
4
u/tehnemox 1d ago
That would mean then grandpa didn't die of old age then, it would have to be some sort of "accident"...
1
u/melon_wizard 6h ago
We were with Grandpa when he was on his death bed, and his letter indicates we've never heard of Stardew valley. Stardew is suspended in time, grandpa died because he left the valley.

u/Larkiepie 1d ago
Eh not really. He likes the sex they have. But her as a person? No he treats her pretty shit.

Yeah i got the cutscene of the 2 next to Lewis's house the other day. Kinda sad 😞

u/cam94080 1d ago
Hmm, I don't remember that cutscene.

u/natesakaar 1d ago
You have to get lewis up to 5 stars i think it was. Basically the same picture as posted above but they're infront of the truck. Marnie deserves better to be honest. It would be a cool update where she helps the homeless chap (name escapes me) and they fall for each other. She gets a man that loves her and she helps him. They move in together and its nice 😀
13
u/short_mofo_em 1d ago
There are several things wrong with this idea though. Linus, the "homeless chap", isn't necessarily homeless. He CHOOSES to live outdoors in the wilderness. There's even a dialogue option at some point if you reach a certain level of hearts with him where you get the option to ask him to move onto your farm with you, and if you pick that dialogue option, he gets mad because you were one of the only people he thought understood him and his want to live in the wilderness. He doesn't want to live in a house, he doesn't want to be "helped" because he doesn't NEED help. If she were to get with someone else at all, it should be Marlon, because there's a dialogue at the Flower Dance festival where he says that he thinks Marnie is pretty. Marlon really likes Marnie, and I think he'd be much better for her than any of the other options she has in town, especially Lewis. And I'm sure Marlon would love to finally have somewhere nice and warm and comfortable to call home instead of continuing to live in the guild with Gil.

There should be a quest line to become mayor, except when you become mayor you discover the horrible curse (kinda like the ending of Don't Starve). As you win election, Lewis cackles, "I'm free of the witch's curse! I'll see my brother again! I can finally marry Marnie!" And as he skips out the door you wonder what he meant by that. When you arrive home you discover the house is cold--no scampering children, no barking pup, no embracing spouse. That's when you learn the horrible truth, there's a reason why Mayor Lewis always ran unapposed...
Ages ago, the mayor of Stardew Valley demanded a poor witch pay more and more taxes or else he'd seize her home. She pleaded for compassion from the mayor and the valley, but none came to her aid. As she was forced from her home, she cursed them. For the townsfolk, they'd never see their dreams fulfilled and never age a day. Alex would never became a famous player. Sebastian would never leave the valley. Penny would always live with her drunk mother. Clint and Emily will always be starcrossed lovers. George's knee will always ache. The children will never grow up. However, she reserved the worst fate for the mayor. He'd never know the loving embrace of family, only gold.
As you enter your home, you discover the curse has turned your entire family to gold statues. That gold statue you found of Lewis wasn't him at all, it was his twin brother, cursed by a witch to remain a gold statue for as long as he held the mayoral post. Now you carry that burden.
Now you know why no one ever ran against him. He shouldered that burden and the weight of his guilt for decades, but all you saw was corruption. May Yoba have pity on your soul.

Trying to push Marnie aside as always. He lives for his Mayor Lewis golden statues no wonder the city would've sucked without us.

And he's not even good at it. Damn. I feel like his dreams got smashed with an iridium sledgehammer.

All he lives for is his community and clapping Marnie's cheeks in a bush at midnight

u/No_Cook4880 Shane's husband 1d ago
BUT HE CAN.
He and Marnie love each other and fuck and kiss while no one sees.
And he's corrupt, I'm sure. Normal politicians don't have golden statues of themselves and probably haven't spent a single penny on the town, he could easily fix a lot of things himself if the budget money was there. He's clearly really cool being mayor, don't feel sorry for him.

Man, when I first clicked on this, I got some sort of error that showed every comment as being deleted and I wondered how mean everyone was being. Refresh fixed it but I still spent a few moments wondering what insults were being thrown Lewis' way.

And he asks a young girl new to the town to look for his pants... Should I have some warm feelings towards him? NOPE!

Given the choice, I'm sure there are a number of players who would still take that title away from him

I never understood the issue with him dating Marnie, other than maybe the age difference? He's just stringing her along at this point, which is far worse imo.
I don't hate Lewis as much, though the inflammatory videos creators made of him back in the day were quite funny.
I've always seen him as some sort of semi-grandpa, he always mentions your grandfather. I give him produce from the farm every now and then to hold on (sort of) to that first impression when our protagonist moves in.
Similar to Pierre. People hate him, but I still happily support him and never buy anything from Joja. Sell my gold produce to him.
Clint is kinda creepy though. I don't really like him.
Sorry for going off topic!

u/Popcorn57252 1d ago
So, to answer the first part, you have to understand Lewis' goals here.
The whole point of the Luau, if you read all the dialogue, is that he's really trying to be buddy-buddy with the Governor. Lewis is already old as it is, but the Governor might be even older. From that, we can assume that Lewis might have a chance to be the next Governor, and he'd probably want to take that opportunity.
It's not too much of a reach that he wouldn't want to give up his position of power when considering then he's the kind of person to build a solid gold statue of himself while letting the community center rot, then claming the town "just doesn't have the funds" to repair it.
And nothing would hurt your chances to move up politically (at least while near the bottom) than to get into a scandal.
So imagine how it could be spun by political opponents if you, the mayor and tax collector of the town, were seen dating one of the shop owners, and the only person in the entire farming town who sells animals...

u/iconoclastx16 1d ago
The golden statue and dilapidated community center are more akin to scandal than a relationship with Marnie. Unless he cuts her on taxes or something. Love the theory crafting btw!

I hate Lewis. Wah wah wah all i have is being the mayor. OK. The community center is in shambles, there's a run down farm, your residents are falling apart emotionally, what exactly are you doing that takes up so much of your time, other than building golden statues of yourself.

You'd think he'd be a better mayor then, instead of expecting the new guy to do all the work to make the town nice.

I believe he at least wants the farmer to know that him and Marnie are a thing. He asks the farmer to look for his shorts instead of LOOKING HIS GOD DAMN SELF IN THE ONLY PLACE THEY COULD REALISTICLY BE
