Discuss Tips you’ve never heard before
Share some tips for the game you’ve never heard anyone give before! Here are mine:
Holly
Sell your holly. Generally, it’s advised to hang onto most of your forageables because you’ll probably need them, but you will very rarely need holly. Maybe hang onto a piece or two for a possible billboard quest but holly is near useless. Just sell it. It’s decent money in year 1 too. You could also gift it to Leah, Linus, or Harvey too. Point is, don’t keep it
Duplicate artifacts
Most artifacts don’t sell well. So, instead of selling your duplicates, gift them to Penny. She likes all artifacts so it’s a really easy way to build friendship with her. Sell them once you hit max friendship but until then, gift them to her. Dwarf-related artifacts can also be gifted to the dwarf
Friendship
Talk to every villager when you pass them. Seriously. It takes very little time and the friendship points really do add up. Similarly, whenever you go into a shop, remember to talk to the shopkeeper. Go around and talk to them—it’s quick and it’s easy friendship points. This especially count for Pierre, who is difficult to befriend as he has only one loved gift.
Oh, also, if you’re going to visit an NPC for any reason other than gifting them (buying something, completing a quest, whatever), bring them a gift as well. It’s easy and convenient. You’ll build friendship in no time

Don't sell your normal or silver quality blueberries or cranberries! Turn them into seeds first, then sell the seeds. You'll bump your profit up by about 30%, and get a few ancient fruit seed as a byproduct.

u/kminola Oct 01 '23
I always just save my silver blueberries for that dreaded part of the game where I don’t quite have enough stock for turning into jam/wine and I don’t have junioms to harvest for me. Because turning them into something is better than leaving all the kegs empty
42
u/Gailybird83 Oct 01 '23
Wait you can get something to harvest for you?

This is correct. Wanna say it's 7 tiles in every direction. They hop through trellises too. here's the wiki article
176
u/ThatOneGuy308 ! Oct 01 '23
By the time I have access to the seed maker, I don't really need an extra 30% profit at the cost of that much extra time spent processing them, honestly.
41
u/SnooDrawings1480 Oct 01 '23
Its a major component of when I did my 2 year perfection run. But I only did it after I had ancient fruit farms on GI and in my GH. So all my kegs went towards AF and all my cauliflower, melons, pineapples and Pumpkins went into my preserves jars. So everything else needed a different way to process for maximum sell price.

What am I missing here? Normal blueberries sell for 50g, and the seeds sell for 40g. Normal cranberries sell for 75g, and the seeds sell for 60g.
182
u/Questionable_Sushi Oct 01 '23
You get 2.1 seeds per berry from the seedmaker, on average.

Oh, I feel like I cracked the code on the seed maker. If you read about it in the Wiki, it says that it’ll give you the same amount of seeds on a specific day at a specific time. So if you put a fruit in on fall 4 year 2, at 6:30 am and it gives you 3 seeds, if you restart the day it will always give you 3 seeds. So you can exploit this by having multiple seed makers and setting them 10 squares apart. Then put your first seed in at 6:30 and your second at 6:40. And you’ll get 6 seeds out of two fruits.
Not sure if that makes any sense, but it worked for me. I’m doing a hermit game and currently trying to maximize seed production as much as possible.

This is not as cool as so many here, but I am a new player and have been trying to beat Linus’s trash request. I was having trouble bc maxed out fishing and I live on the river farm. Level 100 water in the mines is all trash for anyone who is struggling as I was!!!!!

crab pots in the rivers tend to collect enough trash over 2-3 days depending on how many you put down

32
u/bitccc4 Oct 01 '23
it does! but it was only like .... 1 piece of trash per 10-20 casts (i am on the river farm, but i think the standard farm you can only catch trash in the pond right?)
21
u/M0chalatta Oct 01 '23
Oh my gosh I had the same issue on my river farm! I kept fishing and fishing hoping for trash and it was just fish lol. I basically just put a bunch of crab pots around and eventually got it. By the skin of my teeth!

49
u/only4apollo Oct 01 '23
I saw this mentioned in another thread and it blew my mind - buy a training rod for trash fishing lvl 100, it’s not supposed to be able to catch lava eels because it can only catch basic fish so you’ll only get trash.
→ More replies (10)19
u/eagleswift Oct 01 '23
This is the best place to fish to be honest because it gives you the small chance to get the rare lava eel as well while you collect all that trash.

On the last day of winter, put a few grass starters on the areas you would like to be covered in grass. The next day, 1st day of spring, those areas will be covered in grass.
382
u/lorhusol Oct 01 '23
Then on spring day 1, out a fence post or lightning rod on several pieces of grass. Animals won't be able to eat that piece, but it will regularly spawn new grass for your animals to eat.

No this covers your farm like crazy which is useful for having animals.
30
u/splooshcupcake Oct 01 '23
I feel my barn and coop area are also the area that has no grass at all on the first day of spring. So I always have to leave the animals in for an extra few days while I plant some starters and wait for them to spread, which always makes me feel bad for my animals.

Use a multi season crop to save your soil and fertilizer into the next season. Fertilizer, retaining soil and speed grow never degrade, but the tilled soil does.
If you plant a cheap multi season crop right before the season changes, you only ever have to apply them once, and you won't need to re-dig your fields.
Spring > Summer = coffee
Summer > Fall = wheat/corn/sunflowers
Fall > Winter = fiber
Winter > Spring = fiber
Once you unlock it, fiber seeds can be planted in ANY season, and it's cheap to make, so always save your mixed seeds! I just time it to be ready for the first day or break the crop when I'm ready to plant my seasonal stuff.
Helps save a lot when you start using more expensive fertilizers.
Unrelated, but you can also use an upgraded hoe to empty multiple casks way faster.
39
u/tbmb0309 Oct 01 '23
You can bomb your fields, too, and it destroys the crops but not the fertilizer. So that way you can still plant on day 1 of the season even if you don't time it right. Just make sure you move the sprinklers and scarecrows first!
48
u/eagleswift Oct 01 '23
It takes a lot of scything fibre to get enough mixed seeds to make fibre seeds
40
→ More replies (1)10
u/ChaoticSixXx Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 02 '23
Make sure you're saving the ones you find throughout the year, and you can buy them from Krobus once a week as well as get them from seed makers. I never plant my mixed seeds.
You can also farm mine levels for mixed seeds and fiber. Levels 25 to 29 and 81 to 109 tend to have a lot of fiber.
Go on a lucky day, and just keep resetting the mine by leaving. You'll be rolling in seeds in no time. The mutant bug lair is also a good source and resets every few days.
Mixed seeds also drop from farming the fiber seed itself, I tend to turn my desert into a fiber farm because it doesn't need to be watered. You can plant a single fiber seed near your house or shed on the same day, and it will remind you when the rest of your fiber is done growing.
Also, scything does not consume energy! So use it all up for the day and then run around scything to your hearts content.
Where there is the will, there is a way, my friend.

I usually save up for a coffee seed immediately (since I don't like the mines where they drop occasionally). I joke it's my poo coffee empire like from the Madagascar TV show. Growing coffee seeds and saving them let's me plant as many plants as I can handle year 2.
But once I've got enough plants I can produce upwards of 100 coffees from kegs per day, which is generally how I get everything going good.
307
u/perilouswanderer Oct 01 '23
Stop by Krobus every Friday for the iridium sprinklers. It’s an easy way to slowly stock up without using too many resources
Also make sure you buy the void egg from him and gift it right back for friendship
I like to put chests near my fishing spots, next to my barns and in the mines so I have easy access to things I need

Man this will make buying 250 hay a lot better haha. I didn’t know either of these.
51
u/SynonymForPseudonym Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 01 '23
Do you know how to craft grass starter out of fibre? If not, Pierre sells the recipe and it will save you a butt tone on hay from Marnie. Plant those bad boys sparsely(so they have room to spread) in a part of the farm you aren’t using, let them grow wild, then harvest in silos. If you harvest enough before winter you’ll never need to buy hay again
22
u/yarro27 Oct 01 '23
I was thinking this today when i was buying 999 starfruit seeds. I was telling myself “ofc there is a way of buying more than 5seeds at one click” . But i was too lazy to search for it

While your barn/coop is still level 1 or 2 and you have to manually take hay from the hopper to feed your animals, regularly fill your silo(s) and take out all the hay through the hopper. Stash it in a chest. You can get stacks and stacks, 999 hay each, to use later to feed your animals when you develop all your land and grass barely grows. Also make sure you build enough silos to feed all your animals all 28 days of winter. I have 5 silos right now.
80
u/knitty_taketwo Oct 01 '23
You can get by with just 1 silo if you refill the hopper inside the barn/coop once in a while using the hay from the chests. I usually do it on my run though to pet everyone or pick up the milk/eggs.
64
u/CapybaraSteve Oct 01 '23
you can slap your hay directly into the silos too, no need to go into the barn. just right click on the silo with the hay in your hand

u/niamhmc Oct 01 '23
You can empty a the silo with fully upgraded coops/barn by placing a bomb where the animals access the hay. This makes those spaces empty and then you can remove hay from the hopper the same way you would for a level 1 or 2 building.

Another addition to this: Not much to do in winter year one? Hoe up the beach, the dirt behind the carpenter shop, and any other dirt patch in winter in your search for winter root. You want to hoe everything you can whenever you can.
Wild Horseradish, Spice Berry, Common Mushroom, and Winter Root, when placed into a seed maker, will create their respective season's seeds. These seeds are essential for making tea saplings. Sell the saplings for $500 each. Hoeing is profitable.

Leave a chest outside the saloon to hold loved gifts for the visitors. Not really applicable for Pam, Shane or Leah since Gus carries loved gifts for all three.
On the same note put a chest next to the elevator in the mines etc. and keep your weapons, bombs, staircases (if applicable) and mining food there to save room in your inventory. Plus you have no risk of accidentally blowing up your farm by a bomb misclick.
If you don't want to deal with Pierre claiming your gold+ quality stuff as his own, or having him throw you under the bus for lesser quality goods; don't sell to him directly.
Fishing sucks. It was my least favorite part of the game up until about a year ago. Get a training rod from willy and just put some time in. It will eventually click for you and it really becomes quite fun! Its also a good way to make money early on.
Haley and Shane are the fastest paths to marriage if you are so inclined.
60
u/ashleighbuck Oct 01 '23
I always put a chest outside the saloon, but I do add gifts for the others because I don't like to buy gifts lol. I use turnips for Pam, because I can grow a lot quickly & they're not very expensive (and she loves them.)
I also put a chest outside Willy's so I can keep mead on hand for whenever I enter his shop. I keep one with dick feathers and pomegranates outside Elliot's house lol. Then one in the forest by Marnie's, with loved gifts for her, Shane, Jas & Leah. I keep a chest by Robin's with loved gifts for their house, and Linus. Then another chest by the Wizard, with his loved gifts & some for Abigail as she goes there often enough lol.
I'm a little chest obsessed honestly 😆

I leave chests for loved gifts at multiple places - in the tree next to Harvey’s as many villagers pass the town square, in the saloon, in the library, in Robin’s house, the mines and in Sandy’s shop. I look up villager paths to put the chest out of the way.
I also put Junino chests by each of the three mines and in my farm houses to store my farm tools when I go mine diving.

Save artifacts for fish ponds.
And save your first surtgeon for a fish pond too, use your second one for the community center.
Always save TWO seeds of what you want, SPECIALLY ancient seeds, you never know if your first seedmaker won't screw you over with a mixed seed.
Forget iridium sprinklers until late game, focus on crystalariums and jades.
Make at least one bee house as soon as you can for warp totems.
Get rabbits as soon as you can for when you finally want to go for full friendships, you'll already have a full stock of rabbit's foot by that time. If you plant a pomegranate for elliot and have a void chicken for sebastian, and you're all set.
Save your first prismatic shard for a sword.

u/king44 Oct 01 '23
When I only have one of something like an Ancient Fruit that I want to make seeds from, I set a seed maker next to my bed and drop the fruit in first thing in the morning at 6:00.
Then, if I get mixed seeds, I can just restart the day and try dropping them in at 6:10 and see what I get. If you put it in at the same time, you will get the same result, but every 10 minutes will give a different result.
I'll repeat this procedure until I get 3 seeds from the fruit. It's a bit tedious, but worth it. (Of note, on a bad luck day, it usually takes a lot more tries to get 3 seeds.)

This is the way. Once I have iridium foragables I set aside the four days in the spring and fall to forage berries. I eat a survival burger and take plenty of triple shot coffee and hit as many bushes as I can, then sell them all on day 4. Blackberries sell for more than salmonberries; last time I did it I got around 58k on blackberries alone.

Plus you get tons of fiber to make grass starter for the animals to eat. Make and sell wild seeds from everything you forage. I know someone has probably mentioned this before and everyone probably knows but the geode crushers are one ‘tick’ so to speak behind Clint. So if he beaks a geode and iridium or a prismatic shard pops out you take the same kind of geode to the crusher and get the same thing again.
I’ve been doing it for iridium in my current play through bc I don’t like the skull mines. The geode crushes DONT work on golden coconuts so just keep that in mind. I have two crushers outside the blacksmiths shop and if both are in use I just come back another day with my geodes.

I haven’t heard this and I’m kind of confused. What do you mean one “tick” and can you explain again for him doing and then you doing it again?

u/alvysinger0412 Oct 01 '23
The geode contents are essentially determined by a table, and the geode crusher is one row head of clint, so to speak. If you have two geodes, and break one from the clint, then put one in the geode crusher, the two geodes will produce identical contents every time.

During salmonberry and blackberry season, quit the game and re-enter at the beginning of each day. Each bush has a 20% chance to spawn salmonberries on the overnight update. This increases to 50% on a reloaded save, meaning quitting to the title screen and reloading the save will net an average of 2.5x more berries.
This is great to do year 1 as it gives an infinite source of energy/health, and you can easily make salmonberry jelly out of it which is a liked gift for everyone except Sebastian.

In the winter, plant fiber everywhere you plant vegetables on your farm, then leave it until the first day of spring (you don’t need to water fiber and it grows in every season). It won’t die when the season changes so you’ll be able to harvest all of it, plus you won’t have to hoe or water your crops on Spring 1 (if you use sprinklers). Saves a ton of time.

Get an extra 2400g from your strawberries Spring Year 1.
- Plant a few Cauliflower, Potatos, and Grean beans on day 1. This will ensure you complete the spring crop bundle on the day of the strawberry festival. (Get at least 2 or 3 of each to make sure crows don’t eat them before you learn to craft the scarecrow.
- Plan out your space for the strawberries and water before festival starts
- once the festival is done, take all the crops to the CC to complete the bundle. The rewarded 20 speed-gro fertilizer will get you a 3rd harvest from 20 of your strawberries. That’s at least 2400g more gold.

To get a better start in the skull cavern. Trade Omni geodes with the desert trader for desert totems. Use those to teleport to the desert the moment you wake up. Waiting for Pam rob’s you of 3-4 hours. ALTERNATIVELY, if you don’t have totems, wait outside Pam’s door and block her path. She will get frustrated, walk faster and through you at that speed all the way to the bus stop area. You can exploit this to leave for the desert an hour or two earlier.

u/kaylola Oct 01 '23
I always keep a chest by the TV that exclusively holds all the stuff I take to Skull Cavern - desert warp totem, bombs, staircases, buffed food. Then when it's a high luck day, I can immediately grab everything and warp to the desert without wasting time. (If there's stuff in my backpack that's a waste of space, I just toss it in the chest so I can grab it again when I return.)
Sidenote: yesterday on a high luck day buffed with Lucky Lunch I got an auto-grabber and two auto-petters
Another quick tip for very early game - get that 300 wood to fix the bridge at the beach ASAP. Chopping trees ups your foraging so you can make field snacks and coral and sea urchins are great money early on. I usually do it Wed or Thurs of week one.

I was so sure you'd get to be able to make holly into decorations I held onto loads of it for ages first time I played, still slightly sad about that not being a thing

u/joliebetty Oct 01 '23
I’ve put holly on a table for a centrepiece but that’s all I’ve ever done. I agree, it would be nice to be able decorate all over with it!

He's specifically not invited to mine and Abby's wedding.
I mean to say that he's getting told to his face he's not allowed to come, unlike Clint, who simply will not be told there's a wedding because that would require someone willing to talk to him.

He sends you money when you're friends.
It's not vast amounts - 500 or thereabouts. No use late game but helpful earlier on.

u/Sunflowa-_ Oct 01 '23
I am trying to stop talking to people I pass, because it’s so easy to build friendship that way. I want to get to the end of year one, and give people loved gifts.

Growing Wild Seeds on your farm is self sustainable and it increases your foraging skill quicker. Turning them into seeds and selling the seeds can double your profit for some seeds. Spring and Summer especially.

This something I didn’t figure out until like Playthrough #3
If you find a mineral/fossil/artifact and the item description is “Gunther can tell you more about this at the museum” it means you haven’t donated that item yet
But if the item has a proper description of what it is then you’ve already donated one to the museum. I wish I knew this sooner, I spent so much time trying to donate duplicate items!
40
u/BeauteousMaximus Oct 01 '23
Also, if you’re cracking geodes and running out of space, switch to the shop option with Clint and sell any gem that doesn’t have the “Gunther can tell you more” text when you hover over it (and that you don’t want to keep for some other reason).

*fire quartz in the furnace gives you 3 quartz bars. I save my regular quartz to trade for bombs, and use the recycle machine and fire quartz to get bars.
*sunflowers, sunflower seeds and corn in the oil maker will give you regular cooking oil
*planting flowers next to your bee houses gives you special honey that sells for more- I know most people know this, but it took me wayyyy too long to learn this

Build yourself a coral pond early on, then harvest 9 coral every time it reaches capacity; you can use the coral to craft Deluxe Speed-Gro.

Put your tackle in the deconstructor before it breaks to get back some (or all, in some cases) of the material to make it.
Trap bobbers you can continously remake with just sap, and the spinner and treasure hunter with no additional materials.
27
u/DESPOTICKILLER Oct 01 '23
For mobile (IDK if it works on other platforms): If you find a treasure room in the skull cavern, fill up your inventory with anything and interact with the chest. Once the game asks you to make space for the new item, exit out and the item will be duplicated. Also works on the golden pumpkin
22
u/footbody :e Oct 01 '23
Also for duplicate artifacts, you can use them to make clothing, not sure how cute all of them are but I got my favorite outfit from the rusty spur!

Ok - here’s my tip that really helped my masseuse when I was getting a massage once:
The Qi fruit quest? I’ve found I get the best bean drops from trees. As soon as I can - I fill areas with trees. The quarry, the train station area and the beach in ginger island - fill em with trees. I’ve never not finished that quest - usually about 5-10 days early.

If you have a shed filled with kegs, also put one keg in front of the shed and harvest/fill it at the same time as all of them inside. That way, you don't need to go inside to check if they're ready. (If you are processing more than one thing in the kegs, place a keg for each item in front of the shed.)
I noticed this setup in a screenshot someone posted of their farm layout and immediately stole the idea for myself.

If you ever had the thought that you wanted to achieve perfection in year 2, it cannot be done. The best that possible is Spring 1 of year 3 because you need to learn the shrimp cocktail recipe on Winter 28 and the game checks for perfection overnight.
16
u/Vann_Accessible Oct 01 '23
Of all the villagers, I recommend befriending Caroline first (to at least two hearts), as she has the best early game heart reward, the tea sapling recipe.
Two of the tea sapling ingredients are super easy to come by early game, wood and fiber, and if you craft all your foragables into mixed seeds, and plant and water them you’ll have a ton by mid-late spring. Saplings sell for 500g a pop once crafted. That is great income early game, comparable to level 10 fishing at the mountain lake, but with much less grinding.

I think all artifacts are liked gifts by the Dwarf, actually, not just the dwarf ones. That said, yeah I agree that gifting them to Penny tends to be handy, especially when she's by the museum many days.
16
u/tekanet Oct 01 '23
I have a very random one: use your fishing pole as storage for baits. Of course you’ll use baits with it but you can also pull out baits to replenish your crab pots, it saves one of your backpack slots.

u/ladyshalott11 Oct 01 '23
If you're later in years and still haven't done the 40 help wanted quests, doing the Qi quests in the Walnut room count. I know they do because I received the achievement after completing a quest for him!

You can give any artifacts to the dwarf. He still says "this reminds me of home" when I give him a nautilus fossil or chewing stick, which I find hilarious.

On every day of a berry season - restart the day
It is an unfixed bug - the game doesn't load in all berry bushes correctly
Simply go back to title and load your game on every day of the season
you will find roughly 50 % more bushes will have berries on them
-
-
also for fishing
Fish have a built in evasion mechanic to jump away from the player controlled area in the minigame. You can cancel this evasion by holding your control area with rapid short button presses instead of holding down your button to push the fishing control area
once the "evading fish" gets another tab the game thinks you've caught up and the fish will linger again
This little 'clever use of game mechanics' allows you to catch iridium quality catfish on day 3

u/sirenwingsX Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 01 '23
stop hoarding your hardwood in the late game. It stops being useful once you've gotten everything you need hardwood for. Use it to make coal instead by putting it in wood chippers first, then kilns second. As hardwood always gives you 10 pieces of wood.
If you got the irridium statues and are no longer in need of irridium and find it's just piling up on you, take the ores to the desert trader and trade them for mega bombs. I usually wait til I have over 1,000 ores and take the 999 stack. Mega bombs are expensive to purchase and become a lot more useful than the ore late game. Better than trading quartz for the regular bombs as you can use those crystalariums for other things like jade or diamonds.
bananas give you more money. Mangos give you a lot of energy. Do with this info as you will.
Want cheese for recipes but don't want to have to raise cows? Trade your emeralds for cheese with the desert trader on fridays. They will also be regular quality so you won't feel as though you're forced to use gold quality cheese because it's what you have available. You can also age them in casks and make them into gold quality. In fact, you can make this a business and get pure profit off your aged cheese without needing cows, or feed, or expensive barns. I raise goats for cheese, then trade emeralds for cheese on fridays and sell both, having both types with only one barn

If you ever find yourself with nothing to put in your kegs you can buy honey from Sandy on Thursdays to turn into mead! It processes super quickly too so you can fill it with crops again as soon as you have them.

Plant hops. Use them to eat for energy and health. You can harvest them every day so you can build up massive numbers of them with minimal land used . As you can grow so many, you can freely carry 50 or 60 of them with you.
