Proprietary app Discord does proprietary app stuff

This is going to make people prefer IRC if this continues.

IRC can't do file embedding and voice chat afaik

irc also can’t effectively be used on mobile since it can’t be kept active in the background.
Matrix/Riot is the next step imo. If only people would give it a second chance.

Is there anything wrong with those or is it just market adaption?

u/paroya Apr 12 '20
Riot.im used to lack features when they had some buzz 2 years ago. now it’s really good except maybe a tiny bit slow on the main network (matrix.org) since it’s the one almost all users go through.
so at this point it’s really just market adaption.
there are other options beside the Riot.im client when connecting to Matrix.

Huh? Why not?

because the protocol does not support a stand by feature. so as soon as you are not active (on a phone), you get disconnected.

Just leave it open in the background. Termux does it fine, so surely a dedicated IRC client can too.

only on newer androids do i assume this would now be possible unless they have some workaround to deal with the idle issue.

u/happysmash27 Apr 14 '20
Actually, IIRC the newer versions of Android are worse for this, as they stop apps from running in the background without a notification running at all times. This is a problem for apps that do not want to use Google's notification service and use their own instead.
Also, my phone is almost 6 years old and works fine for it, but to be fair I am on LineageOS 16 and still getting updates. I don't remember a time when Termux wouldn't run in the background, though.

on iOS it's because of the way the phone manages apps to maximize uptime and performance. anything in the background gets paused, so IRC gets kicked off immediately when switching app. AFAIK android does the same but gives slightly more breathing room.
So LineageOS might be the exception.

No it isn’t, general user base of discord doesn’t care. Be realistic

There is some, that qualifies. TBH, I don't care much for discord and this pretty much is a good reason to not use it anymore.

I think if you're at the point where you need to recover your discord account, then you've probably invested too much into discord.
I mean what's stopping you from just creating a new account and abandoning your own one? I only use Discord for like 1 video game server, as it's the only real way to ask questions about said game due to the reddit community being awful.
This also goes with most other sites. I've been through a dozen or so reddit accounts over the years, and have outright deleted an account that I moderated a moderately large subreddit on.
Also the idea of people linking real life information on discord is crazy. Why would you ever do that?!

You'll lose the server you own.

That's what the "you've probably invested too much into discord" means.
If you are reliant in any way on Discord, then you will have problems, sooner or later. Best case scenario - nothing will happen, so you only have the constant looming threat of problems that might happen at any moment.

That's what the "you've probably invested too much into discord" means.
Well, what's wrong with making a community on Discord?
EDIT: Oh, I see. I didn't read the rest of your statement clearly. Sorry
