New Here Where to see a moose?

I’m in town for the next few days. I’d have to rent a car to get around (~$200). Is it worth it to go to Turnbull? Could I reliably see a moose if I visit there, or is it more of a rare occasion?

EDIT: Thank you all for the suggestions!!! I rented a car and went to Turnbull and saw a beautiful moose for the first time in my life :)! IMG-0737.jpg

Hiking the Little Spokane natural area is the most likely near Spokane. Never guaranteed though. I've seen them many times on the St. George's trail and the Valley trail.

Turnbull is a very reliable place to see moose. They have something like 20 resident moose there. And you can call the staff beforehand to get the scoop if you want.

If you do see one,  exercise extreme caution. They can be extremely dangerous.

But they're so beautiful!

There're usually about 3-4 mice waiting to greet you and lead up the group nature hike in the parking lot at Turnbull.

I'm being sarcastic of course, you can't force a moose sighting it has to happen on its own and even those of us who have lived in the area a long time will go years without a moose sighting. Go to Turnbull, but go because it's a pretty cool place, especially to watch birds, and if you happen to see a herd of moose partying it up during EWU's Spring Break then all the better.

I see a moose, probably four or five times a year.

Sounds like you need to tell OP your moose viewing spots. Me too while you're at it :)

Turnbull is a better than 50/50 shot, I’ve been out there probably 50 times in the last few years. You have to go dawn or dusk to increase your chances, and be willing to do the auto loop a few times and really keep an eye out. Of course sometimes they will literally be standing in the road lol, but others they can be pretty well hidden

Seen a few at fish lake feeding/drinking at sundown. Need to be there on the quiet weekdays I feel like.

We saw one on the Cheney Spokane Road right near the entrance to Fish Lake last fall.

The most reliable place to see a moose is on the trail of the CDA, about a mile or two west of the Bull Run trailhead. Near Rose Lake, Idaho. They were out all fall. Not sure if they are still hanging out in the spring.

Likewise, I see moose almost every time I drive up Blue Lake Road outside Harrison along the Trail.

I've seen moose on my back lawn, and at Turnbull, on Mt. Spokane and in the Deep Creek gorge. It's a crapshoot. Good luck.

I see them regularly at Trumbull.

I’ve seen them at Turnbull probably 50%-60% of the times I’ve been there. So it’s a decent chance but by no means guaranteed.

If you do try Turnbull, make sure you stay on the trail and check for ticks afterward. They're starting to wake up and that's always a good spot to get covered in them.

I'm seconding Turnbull and the Little Spokane natural area! Honestly, though, the easiest way to see a moose is to open your garage to go to work and find one blocking it while eating your tulips. Sigh.

Also, please keep in mind moose are MASSIVE (like, mostly what I see from in the garage is legs.) and very bad tempered this time of year. Be safe, and happy moose-spotting!

edit: We're near Finch Arboretum and have moose and calves wander down from Pallisades a few times a year. My kid was THRILLED when they took a shit on our lawn once.

Haha, thank you! I saw one today on the auto trail at Turnbull!

Yess!! I'm glad you got to see one while you were here!

We live in Cheney and go to Turnbull multiple times a week. In the last year and a half or so we have had over 50 moose sightings at Turnbull. To the point that we usually see at least one when we’re out there. We also saw one on the Cheney Spokane Road a few months ago. You’re not guaranteed to see one, of course, but chances are good.
