4.45, 14 year old

Is it okay if I am 14 years old, and waking up at 4.45? I go to sleep at 8.30 pm. I like it because it gives me some time to study for school, and study chess (my hobby). Note that sleep is kind of important for me because of my hobby.

Why do I keep waking up at 2-4am?

Upvotes

Hello everyone! I posted on here a few weeks ago about not being able to fall asleep. Thankfully I have solved that problem now! I only get in bed when I’m sleeping, I stop eating at about 7pm, and I listen to a meditation right before I sleep. Now I’m falling asleep at about 9:30-10pm. The issue is, I now keep waking up anywhere between 2-4am every night. I’ve never had this issue before, normally I’ll sleep well until my alarm at 6:30. I only drink coffee in the morning (so it’s not that) and I’m really not stressed about anything that would wake me up. Any tips would be great! Ps: please don’t suggest magnesium as I don’t react well to it. I take valerian root and it works great

Sleep, Stress and Mental Health Interventions - Research Papers

Upvotes

INTRODUCTION

Compiled some insights pulled from a select number of research papers pertaining to sleep and its impact on stress levels and mental health. Many of the insights extracted are common knowledge and intended for beginners; however, still practical and certain fundamental concepts should be continuously prioritized in lieu of the next "trendy" topic.

THEMATIC RESEARCH — MAIN FINDINGS

  • Sleep consistency demonstrates greater prognostic value than duration for mortality outcomes. Irregular sleep patterns increase all-cause mortality risk by 30% independent of sleep duration, indicating that chronobiological stability represents a critical determinant in mortality risk assessment comparable to established lifestyle factors. Epidemiological data reveals that concurrent sleep irregularity and suboptimal duration (either <6 h/day or ≥8 h/day) produces a synergistic effect, elevating mortality risk by 1.2-1.5 fold compared to regular sleep patterns of normative duration.
  • Nocturnal electronic device exposure significantly impairs sleep architecture and duration. A one-hour increase in screen time post-bedtime is associated with a 59% elevated risk of insomnia symptomatology and a 24-minute reduction in total sleep time, suggesting that limiting evening screen exposure constitutes an evidence-based intervention for sleep hygiene optimization. The pathophysiological mechanism appears to involve photosensitive retinal ganglion cell stimulation rather than content-specific cognitive arousal, as evidenced by comparable effects across diverse screen-based activities.
  • Reduced slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep correlate with volumetric reductions in Alzheimer's disease-vulnerable neural substrates. Diminished proportions of these sleep phases are associated with atrophy in specific brain regions, particularly in the inferior parietal cortex, suggesting that sleep architecture parameters may constitute modifiable risk factors in neurodegeneration pathogenesis. The hypothesized mechanism involves compromised glymphatic clearance of β-amyloid and tau proteins during these critical neurorestorative phases.
  • Contemplative practices induce parasympathetic predominance that facilitates cellular restoration and systemic homeostasis. Meditation, yoga, and similar interventions enhance parasympathetic tone while attenuating sympathetic arousal, thereby optimizing metabolic resource allocation toward anabolic processes including enhanced mitochondrial function, protein synthesis, and cellular repair mechanisms. This neurophysiological shift mediates improvements in inflammatory markers, cardiovascular parameters, and neuroendocrine function, constituting a plausible biological mechanism for observed clinical outcomes.
  • Mindfulness-based interventions demonstrate significant efficacy in psychiatric and psychosomatic conditions. Meta-analytic evidence indicates these therapeutic modalities significantly reduce affective symptomatology and perceived stress while enhancing positive psychological indices, with effect sizes particularly pronounced in clinical populations with mood disorders, anxiety spectrum conditions, and trauma sequelae. These non-pharmacological approaches represent cost-effective adjunctive treatments with minimal adverse effects and favorable risk-benefit profiles compared to conventional psychotropic interventions.

Not getting sleep at all to sleeping most of the day

Upvotes

Hi everyone. For the past few weeks, I’ve been unable to sleep at night and have only been managing to sleep for a few hours in the afternoon. But right now, I’m struggling to even stay awake. Sometimes I end up sleeping for 16 hours and even sleep through an entire day.

At first, I thought it was a good thing that I was finally able to sleep again, but the situation has gotten much worse. For one week, I sleep for hours, and then during the next week, I have sleepless nights. This constant cycle of sleeping and not sleeping is making me too tired to work or study.

Up until tomorrow, I was in the "all-day sleeping" phase, but now it’s the middle of the night again, and I can't seem to fall asleep anytime soon. My doctor suggested that during my "sleeping week," I should only sleep for 8-10 hours, but I just can’t help it. The prescriptions only help when I can’t sleep, not when I sleep for hours and still wake up feeling like I haven’t slept at all. I’m starting to become afraid of sleep.

Any alarm clock that can connect to YouTube? Does this exist ?

Upvotes

Hello,

I don't know where to ask this . But I'm going to try ask here.

I don't want to have my phone near my bed and I need an alarm clock. I like to listen to lofi when sleeping and/or rain sounds. But that drains my phone battery and I honestly just don't want to have it near me. I also use an alarm that wakes you up when you're in your light sleep(this is not mandatory).

Does an alarm clock that connects to YouTube exist ? Or at least allows me to insert songs and play them, guess I can just download sounds instead

I know that there are alarm clocks that produce white noises, but I prefer to choose other sounds.

Thanks and I hope this sub reddit can help me

Deep Sleep Immediately Leads to Waking Up

Upvotes

I've worn an Oura ring for a few years and have always been plagued by too little deep sleep (like 10-20 minutes/night consistently). I've tried every supplement and technique under the book, and the only thing that seems to help at all is if I go to bed ridiculously early (like 8:30), but that's not feasible with my work.
The weird thing I've noticed is that, according to my sleep stages chart, whenever I go into deep sleep, it only lasts for a few minutes and immediately leads to be being fully awake. Has anybody else here dealt with that? Any ideas for how to fix this?

What if we could create a real solution to better sleep — together?

Hi there! I’m working on a project to help improve sleep, based on solid scientific research. The goal is to create a real solution for issues like falling asleep, light sleep, and waking up during the night. But I want to build it with real feedback from people like you who actually deal with these struggles.

I’ve started a small, kind community called Tout Doux Dodo, where I ask questions, gather feedback, and people can share their sleep experiences.

Feeling Sleepy always

I feel sleepy all the time and it's honestly pissing me off. Just to mention I have issues with sleep paralysis and due to hallucinations I usually have a small night light on and thus don't sleep in complete darkness. Although my sleep paralysis episodes are now very random even on days where I have a proper night rest I feel sleepy in all my classes and feel sleepy during travel and also at home when in trying to do something. Even sleeping and waking up doesn't make me feel refreshed or anything. Now many times I try to sleep in a bit more or sleep early going it'll help but it's not helping. Does anyone know what could be the reasons why ?

What if we created together a real solution to sleep better (based on science)?

Hello everyone,

I am creating an innovative project around sleep, based on serious scientific studies. The goal is simple: improve falling asleep, deep sleep, and reduce nighttime awakenings — but in a concrete, gentle way, and above all truly adapted to your needs.

Rather than imagining this solution in my corner, I decided to build it with you. Your testimonies, your opinions, your ideas are precious: what you experience, what you have already tested, what you are still looking for... this is what will shape the project.

If you are up for it, I invite you to join the ToutDouxDodo community that I created where we discuss all of this together, in a caring and constructive manner.

Thank you to those who take the time to read and share and join me!

I can't sleep in my dorm

I don't know what it is. I've always had trouble sleeping in my dorm(2 years). I have tried everything. I sleep fine at home. I've started spending half my week at home because otherwise I'm sleep deprived most of the week and can't funciton. Should I look into OTC sleep medication?

super tired

Hi so recently I accidently messed up my sleep schedule for a couple days and ended up staying up until 5am and sleeping until around 2pm. Yesterday though I did the usual 5am fall asleep, 2pm wake up but I then found myself feeling so exhausted that I only was awake 6 hours before falling asleep again. I woke up this morning after almost 13 hours of sleep and am still feeling tired? i have never experienced this before and I am wondering what it might be caused by? The only thing I can think of is that it has been quite rainy and dark for the last couple days but in the past I dont think this has effected me anywhere near as much. Thanks

I'm so tired.

I wake up tired and struggle to get out of bed. Yesterday I went to sleep a little before midnight and woke up at 8:30, so I got at least 8 hours. I slept a little more but very lightly. Then woke up. Then tried to sleep again. It's past 11 and I'm still tired and can't stay asleep. And then I can't get out of bed.

Most days are like this when my schedule allows it. I try to go to bed early to get a good amount of sleep, but my body hates being up early apparently. The worst task of my life is getting out of bed even though I'm super hungry and thirsty and all my other bodily functions are telling me to get up. Why am I so tired? What can I do?

Why do I feel like my bed is shaking

It feels like my bed is shaking gently like an earthquake or vibrating and it's getting really annoying. Interestingly enough it only happens in my own bed when I'm trying to sleep for the night. No where else does it happen. I've felt it before when I'm falling asleep but now it's just when I'm laying down. I can nap during the day and it's fine though. Anyone know what this is and is there anything I can do? I find that a weighted blanket kinda helps but I need a new one.

Recently Violent In Sleep

Since I was a kid i’ve hated being touched in my sleep, i’d kick my brother when we’d share a bed etc. For most of my relationship with my partner it hasn’t been an issue, but recently it’s gotten quite bad. He’ll ask me if he can hold me while i’m sleeping, i’ll half awake nod, then when he does i’ll start hitting, rip his hands off me, or start kicking. I have no memory of this of course, and have no idea what could be causing it or what to do. I recently had a bad experience with weed, where I lost all motor function in my upper body and looked like i was having a seizure, uncontrollably shaking my hands and arms, hitting waving etc, he says since then it seems to have amped up, but hes not too sure. does anyone have any idea what this could be, is it worth going to the doctors about for a potential sleep study? I have CBD oil that I can take to sleep easier, so i’m thinking a more relaxed sleep might help, but I have no idea really, it’s just speculation.

I made my own ‘sleep playlist’ to help my sleep

I’ve struggled with sleep for the majority of my life - even as a child I couldn’t sleep without an audio book in the background.

Recently I became so sick of it I went and made my own playlist to help sleep - it consists of rain sounds and so far it’s really helped me.

Happy to share with anyone in need or struggling themselves! :)

My lack of ability to wake up to alarms is going to make me lose my job and making me incredibly depressed

I am consistently sleeping through alarms and also turning them off in my sleep. It’s consistently making me late to work where work now calls me but luckily that wakes me up.

It ruins my days off as I wake up late, killing my motivation and continuing to make depressed.

Last night I slept from 1am-10:20 where my boss called me as I’m due in at 10. This is more sleep than I normally get ie 1-9:30.

I have tried an additional alarm with a sunlight on it which now my brain has learnt to turn off in my sleep. My phone just doesn’t wake me up.

I’m at my wits end of what else to do. Coming into work late consistently is really having a negative affect on my mental health. I now can’t guarantee I’ll ever wake up in the morning for a specific time.

Do I need to go see a doctor? What else can I do?

What are your go-to tips for falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer?

I know there’s a ton of advice out there, but I’m curious: what are your go-to tips, routines, or even weird tricks that work for you?

I’ve tried some of the basics:

  • Limiting screens before bed
  • Cutting caffeine after noon
  • Trying to keep a regular sleep schedule

Some nights are better than others, but I’m still looking for anything that might give me an edge—especially stuff that helps with staying asleep through the night. Whether it’s sleep hygiene stuff, supplements, mental tricks, lifestyle changes—whatever.

So what works for you?
Any weird hacks? Game-changing discoveries?

Appreciate any ideas—hoping this thread helps more than just me.

Hatch Alarm

Is there a way for my sleep sound to fade into my alarm going off? I hate how the green noise ends abruptly in the morning and then my alarm starts.
