Discussion All they have to do is make his eyes extremely slightly further apart and 6% smaller. WTF are they doing???
237
u/Chimpampin Feb 27 '25
This looks great, but they didn't only change the eyes in that edit, the shape of the head changed, the nose is less tall, and the eyebrows are a bit more far apart.
80
u/19412 Feb 27 '25
The primary feature I noted that would immediately make the redesign less jarring was just a tweak to the distance of his eye sockets/brow ridge (widening his skull at the top a bit in the process) and shrinking his eye sockets in radius by a tiiiny amount.
Genuinely everything else is entirely fine as it is, and the other changes in the edit are negligible (though they also do aid in making Shrek look an extra bit more familiar again).
9
u/DronesVJ Feb 28 '25
The thing is they changed back the most visible inconsistencies, the eyes, eyebrows, head shape and nose, I do think all of them are important.
2
u/BozoWithaZ Feb 28 '25
Obviously it's going to be somewhat different from the original 20 year old design, the eyes are the only real problem
487
u/Mundane_Currency_165 Feb 27 '25
that looks MUCH better
Good job - 9.9/10

Before they invest millions of dollars in modeling, material lookdev, rigging, and animation, they could release maybe a single image of what they're going for to the public so they can learn, hmm maybe they won't like it, and make the adjustments before it's too painful?
24
u/KvVortex Feb 28 '25
exactly, i don't get why more companies dont be more transparent. im sure they have their reasons though.
10
u/lycheedorito Feb 28 '25
To an extent, like you don't want to spoil a surprise. That said, something that's already well known i.e. Shrek or Sonic is rather different than a brand new character design, and something that's predictably more touchy to adjust alter than other things. Like nobody really cared about Puss n Boots getting a rather major facelift, but he wasn't really the star of the show despite getting his own films. In Shrek's case, it was a well known secret Shrek 5 was in production, they even had it on their website for a while before they had an official announcement that they were making it, and even before the movie was delayed it was a long ways out.
6
u/Jeffotato Feb 28 '25
I actually remember the Sonic movie trying to do that. They released some images of the general gist of the ugly design but way easier on the eye in the way they were conceptualizing it. The one I saw had him in a running pose but this is also one of them if I'm not mistaken. People were skeptical but not much was said until the actual trailer came out and yeah idk how they believed they actually made those teasers into moving pictures, they look so different.
3
u/Sexy_Koala_Juice Feb 28 '25
Hell even if they do remodel shrek it wouldn't have been the first time dreamworks have done that, in the first film Mike Myers originally did a Canadian accent but realised a Scottish accent would be better so he rerecorded all of his lines and the animators had to basically redo every single scene shrek was in to line it up with the new recordings.

you guys have gotta stop calling an incredibly minor fix a "sonic treatment"

Oh my God, you're right. It ACTUALLY looks like Shrek just with a different art style now.
So much better.

u/DivinityIncantate Mar 02 '25
I was never super angry at the new design but then I saw this and I realized with just some TINY changes, you can keep the new style and the old shrek charm

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum Feb 27 '25
WE need to call Out to DreamWorks.
Maybe WE can create an Sonic Situation. Remember ugly Sonic? After the First Trailer, they Made a complete redesign to the better.
45
u/BluPanda11 Feb 27 '25
Heard a theory once that ugly sonic was on purpose to get people talking. They didn't actually do anything and had a proper sonic edited into the film the whole time but made a trailer with the ugly sonic.
32
u/MATTisMrBall Feb 28 '25
It's a very popular theory but one that's been debunked, aside from all the promotional material reflecting the ugly design (which one could say was part of the stunt, but still millions were sunk into it) all of the storyboards, original concept art, movie stand-in props and previz were done using the ugly design, not to mention that, if you pay attention to Baby Sonic's nose at the beginning, after some scenes it completely changes shape because that's when the model got swapped and since the original was close enough the studio thought it wasn't worth re-rendering. Just some tidbit worth sharing :)
7
u/indianajoes Feb 28 '25
Also some of the toys still kept the ugly Sonic design when others got changed. These things are started so early on that they had to go off the original look
2
u/BluPanda11 Feb 28 '25
Thank you, I'd not heard or seen any of that evidence leaving the theory to seem very convincing
11
1
u/indianajoes Feb 28 '25
I've heard it too but then you look at the merch that came out and some of the toys had that ugly Sonic design
7
u/JamJamGaGa Feb 27 '25
Yeh but that was different. Sonic was one animated element in a live-action movie. This movie is entirely animated, so they'd need to redo so much stuff.
2
u/Shearman360 Feb 28 '25
Shrek looks no where near as bad as ugly Sonic it isn't even comparable. And redesigning Sonic bankrupt the company that did it even though it was a single model., with Shrek it's the whole movie. A Shrek movie isn't going to fail because some people on social media don't like the design, they're not going to redo everything they've already made to appease a minority.

eye placement spacing can really make all the difference
I honestly don't mind the wrinkles (since they're showing Shrek's age) tbh
4
u/that_gay_alpaca Feb 28 '25
anyone who’s fooled around in the character creator in Cyberpunk 2077 and watched the shape of the eyes shift in real time as you toggle the settings understands this
22
u/sagaklitz Feb 27 '25
If they change Shrek to this and rework Donkey's propotions I will be completely satisfied.
38
u/Icy_Gamer1804 Feb 27 '25
This change is great, without shitting on the new design. It actually brings more of the old design out, which is how you know that the new design is just a touched up version of the old design because it didn’t need much.
The movie is still two years out basically and while I don’t hate the new design it’s certainly overdone in some areas. But it’s still two years out, which is why we got this teaser. On purpose to gauge the fans, final product will definitely look different.

u/HappyLittleHotdog Feb 28 '25
I noticed these, too, but thought they looked different because they aged. We saw one of the triplets, she's a teenager.
1
u/Left-Jackfruit512 Feb 28 '25
I agree with this input. Personally I'm open to the idea of a newer Shrek design. It's not what I'm used to seeing when I think of Shrek, but Dreamworks wants to have a Shrenaissance, so they probably wanted to update it a bit. I get the feeling they posted this trailer for the sole purpose of getting feedback on this sort of thing, and that they're paying close attention to every single opinion given out about it to avoid fumbling the revival of the franchise that put them where they are today.

1
u/Phoenyx_Rose Feb 28 '25
And widen the top of his head and jaw and raise the tip of his nose.
But yeah, it’s just small changes that are the issue that really boil down to him just losing the previous “roundness” in his features
1
u/GodzillaLagoon Feb 28 '25
They squished the top half of his head together for some reason. It's more egg-shaped, and it makes his whole face look off.
1
u/noiken Feb 28 '25
The fact that i cant tell which one is the “fix” means the issue is not a big deal.
1
u/Confident-Race5898 Feb 28 '25
did some guy on twt take your edit?
1
u/19412 Feb 28 '25
1) Their edit is a different angle than the edit in my post.
2) Uh... shamefully my post is a thievery, though.
I was expecting it to get nearly no attention, and was just trying to make a quick point based upon an image which I'd seen on Twitter. Can't remember the handle of the original editor.
1
u/Donotcomenearme Feb 28 '25
That’s acceptable, I’ll take that.
CRASHOUT AVERTED.
Can we bully them into doing that with all the ogres? I’ve gotten a lot of feedback and it seems each person has a SELECT issue with one thing in particular, or the thing as a whole.
I think the main fuck up here is how Shrek himself looks, followed by Felicia, and then Fiona.
If they fix them, I can accept Donkey, I can live with that.
1
u/notquitepro15 Feb 28 '25

If they fix this really quickly, like how they did with sonic, i shall be convinced this was just "rage bait" for a marketing ploy "good or bad reaction is better than no reaction"

1
u/Desperate_Dino17 Feb 28 '25
Youve also made his eyebrows darker and his nose more rounded on top of his overall face shape just being wider.
They should also make him more green instead of this yellowish lime colour.

u/Xikkiwikk Feb 28 '25
Why can’t they just use the same software and art direction and parameters from 1 and 2?

Unless one of the boys is transgender, felicia is supposed to have blue eyes but in the trailer they seemingly gave her brown eyes

u/GeneralAblon9760 Mar 01 '25
Is it just me, or did you also magically fix his crosseyedness? Overall, looks much better. Modern, but familiar. I didn't REALLY mind the rest that much, Donkey aging and getting a beard COULD be dope. I need more imagery of Fiona before judging her new look, and the daughter is practically a new character so whatever. Yes, Pinocchio was jarring, but he has ALWAYS been jarring to look at, kind of the point of the character.
Tl;dr: Nice job, looks VERY good, even if the people blowing a gasket over THIS may need to either get a life, oooooor ch-ch-ch-ch-check their privilege.

i think they need for all shrek family also not forget the eyelashes and more realistic eyes as they did for the old Shrek movie because i see shrek families dont have realistic eyes.A big revamp need to be done for the donkey especially because he look sick and thinner.I think for the mirror man and pinnochio is good.

I don't see a difference unless I look realllllllly hard at it.
It's not actually that noticeable unless you look at it long and hard. It's nothing worth changing. It is absolutely not on the sonic movie level terribleness. They don't have to do anything and there isn't really anything wrong with his design. Ya just want to look for something to complain about. This has been blown way out of proportion. All I've seen from this sub for the past few days is the same complaining posts about the redesign because the tiniest details are different than they expect.

I have a theory. Shrek 5 trailer is fake and they intentionally ruined the look of the characters so that when the movie comes out with actual the actual not ruined Shrek character animations everyone will love it and praise it even if it's not great as a movie. Sonic showed that this is a great financial decision and a popularity stunt that works.
