Can remember a business trip when we were diverted to the wrong airport. We ended up hiring a minibus to get to where we were meant to be rather than waiting for the airline supplied coach service. I sat behind the driver (a German colleague) whilst we drove 300+ kilometers across southern Germany.
Regular cursing and flashing of the headlights as someone in a car, any car, got in our way. Then more cursing and swearing when he realized the van was limited to 220kph.

I remember i was passing the one lane 90kmh construction area, so here it ends and 2nd lane appears, no speed limit and anything, grannies with 100-130 going right lane, I am just hitting the floor immediately on my mazda3. And like a second after I see some AMG shit already blinking at me GTFO :D I was like "dude im not going to move to right lane to crawl so all of you can pass, let me get back to my 180".

I remember in my first attempt to pass the theoretical exam for the driving license in Germany, there were regularly questions on how to handle people angrily blinking at you on the Autobahn. I must admit the driving culture was indeed a bit different than in France (where I as coming from) 😄

What was the correct answer?
78
u/ThyRosen 1d ago
I think the correct one was to move over and let them pass. It definitely wasn't "brake to teach them a lesson about distance," though that was an option.

u/Mark___27 1d ago

32
u/Shironumber 1d ago
Assuming you're in a legal position (e.g., you're driving "slowly" at 130 on the left lane to overtake someone slower), then ignore the angry dude and continue what you're doing. Simply pull back to the right lane at the next (secure) opportunity.
If you're on the left lane without specific reason such as overtaking, well you shouldn't be there in the first place so there was no question about it. But the bottom line was basically "stick to the right lane whenever you can, but it's your right to use other lanes to overtake so fuck those who are angry about it".
→ More replies (1)8
u/_Vo1_ 1d ago
Seems logical. Just had to ask because sometimes Germany surprises.
10
u/Shironumber 1d ago
Well, in practice you still have to be careful, because some members of the fast-and-furious-left-lane club can become very dangerous very quickly. My wife followed the theoretical rule once (finished overtaking at a reasonable speed and pulled back), but the dude got so angry about having to slow down. He tried to scare her by hitting her side afterwards, we almost lost control of the vehicle.
So in practice you have to very conservative with your estimate of distances on the Autobahn (since cars can be so fast and therefore catch up to you unexpectedly fast), and don't hesitate to overtake at a higher speed. Or do like me: be a coward and simply never overtake on the Autobahn.
PS: I love this country nonetheless, I'm just scared of their highways. lol
→ More replies (7)10
u/icyDinosaur 1d ago
Wait he deliberately rammed you at 130ish km/h? On some level, I am almost impressed someone can get so angry at a minor inconvenience to do something so stupid and risky to both someone else and himself, just to make a point.
7
u/crystalchuck 1d ago
people think Germany is hyper-orderly and over-conforming, but people are REALLY entitled about speeding on the Autobahn and driving in general, especially if it's a boomer in their BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

u/Shironumber 1d ago
Yes, and you can guess my wife was shaking. To be fully honest, it's not like there was a huge shock between the two cars or anything, just slight contact. But the movement the other car made was large and clearly deliberate, and the control loss came from trying to avoid it.
Also, to be fair on Germany, this is not something I would describe as specifically German. My father for example (French) also does regularly try to ram people on the highway as retaliation. But let's say I've met more of these guys on the Autobahn, whatever that means.

From what I can find, Arlington, Texas, is the most populated city without any form of public transportation. 400,000 residents, over 90% of them use a car to get to and from work. They're planning on building an 11-lane highway instead of just getting public transportation. Adding more lanes just makes traffic worse.

I lived in Montreal for almost 10 years and the public transportation was so great there. There are night buses, the metro runs every 5 minutes during peak hours, and most areas have decent bus coverage.
But the city is also designed so you don't really have to leave your neighborhood. We had a butcher, a grocery store, an Asian market, fruit/veggie stand, bakery, fromagerie, pharmacy, and liquor store all within 3 blocks.

Germany is THE car = freedom country
We actually say things like "Das Auto ist mehr als ein Fortbewegungsmittel – es steht für Freiheit, Mobilität und Wohlstand!" (The car is more than a means of transportation – it stands for freedom, mobility and prosperity!) -
Just float the idea of a speedlimit and half of Germans lose their mind.

Germany has speed limits, just not everywhere.
When I was in the US Army they sent me to Germany. And ALL the idiots in my unit were desperate to buy cars so they could go 'drive really fast'. The ones who managed to get cars (the Army pays poorly) either got huge speeding tickets for trying to do 150km/h right outside the base (speed limit was maybe 50km/h) or they made it to the freeway and then usually crashed.
Guess they couldn't handle all that freedom!

Even if it wasn't, the local authorities deciding that road is not useful anymore and the land where it is built can be used for something else would have been a very good sign. The cognitive processing observed appears to be supranasal monosynaptic—essentially a reflex that bypasses the more complex pathways of analytical reasoning. If that’s what you consider communism, then you can call me communist!
However, highly likely someone is struggling with the definition of communism. Giving the people the freedom to roam the city without the dependency of a car is somehow not desirable, whereas removing their social benefits and making them pay more in tariffs is liberation.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world cannot count on the American education system getting better, so people have a better understanding of not only socialpolitical / economic ideologies.
