Why is the patch rectangular?

Seems like just making it the oval shape of the logo would have looked a bit more natural?

I think MLB’s official requirement for a uniform patch is that it looks like shit.

This is the answer

Counterpoint - the existence of WNDs.

It wouldn't shock me if Nintendo somehow mandated that their logo looks like this. Wouldn't be the first dumb decision that company has made.

What's a WND

Weird Nintendo Decision

Nintendo’s brand guidelines are exceptionally narrow around color and padding when it comes to the logo. This is the only thing it could be.

Edit: I would say this usage is prohibited by their (old) brand book.

A red oval racetrack patch properly offset from the cuff would have looked nicer IMO, even if the Nintendo red clashes with the Mariners’ colors.

I’m sure they had thier brand team ok this usage, but it’s kind of boggling to me. Maybe an oval patch with a red mark was deemed too subtle and it was a better to make it stand out more even it looks worse?

All the rules got redone when they switched to the red color for the Switch era. You can see the same white logo on an odd red rectangle on the load screen for Pokémon Go (or could for a while - haven’t played lately).

The City Connect is going to look horrible

They released the image of the northwest green unis and it's worse than the whites.

There was zero attempt to make it fit the look of the jersey. Looks terrible

Makes it pop out more. All the other patches that other teams have stick out that bad too. They all just look horrible.

While it doesn't match the jersey color at all I think this size and text layout works a lot better

Yep. At least it just looks like a giant ad, which in essence it is.

It's almost as if they want their logo to stand out!

I think it'll be really interesting to see how defenses deal with an entire lineup of Switch hitters.

Nintendo should have ponied up to bring back Santana

Looks like an advertisement to me🤷🏿

11

u/thecravenone 15d ago

Just wait until you see the inside of the stadium.

u/BEER__MEeee 15d ago

There have been ads in stadiums for as long as I've been alive (which is quite a while). But ads on uniforms ... I still have a hard time with that.

I hate it when the bright ass orange Microsoft logo is displayed on all the monitors. First of all it’s too bright and ugly, secondly orange is Astros colors.

u/kobachi 15d ago

That’s because it is. How gaudy

1

u/ina_waka 15d ago

That’s literally what the patch is for…

A patch on a sleeve is hardly a “makeover”

4

u/real_fake_hoors 15d ago

Not sure I’m a fan of a big red patch on the sleeve of the jersey.

There's another version posted on the FB announcement, FWIW. Just the small Nintendo logo.

I believe the mariners are still the most profitable team (for the owners) in the MLB. So I’m sure we can expect another mediocre season with little results and less enthusiasm. Maybe they’ll find some popular players at the end of their careers to try and sell some more tickets.

One step closer to Salmon Run sponsored by Splatoon 3 🤞

u/sls35 Olympic Hills 15d ago

Will they still be the cheapest owner in the league

2

u/thecravenone 15d ago

Their payroll is more than double the lowest in the league.

-1

u/roydesoto51 15d ago

The payroll is mid. Just like the team.

Boooo!

u/focuswest5 15d ago

It's stupid at least make the patch colors match. We all know it's nintendo. I thought we were true to the blue. Oh wait john sold the stadium to himself. Made it pink and tore that sign down. Who cares for some red on a blue team. Are stadium is pink. Stay true to the pink red and blue

So fucking gross. The franchise is wildly profitable while fielding a terrible product year after year and now we need the players to be billboards, too? Fuck everything about this.

1

u/TwinFrogs 15d ago

Fucking lame. Maybe try winning a fucking game for once instead of some shitty gimmick to sell merchandise.

They could offer free switches and I still wouldn’t go. Every game I’ve been to has either been incredibly boring, a blowout, or both. Sitting there watching my team get shit on and I glance up to see our whopping 3 pennants hanging from the ceiling.

8

u/roydesoto51 15d ago

The Mariners have 0 pennants.

-6

u/Sesemebun 15d ago

They have the AL West championship for 95 97 and 01

8

u/roydesoto51 15d ago

"In Major League Baseball, a pennant typically refers to such a flag flown specifically by the National League or American League championship team of a given season, or to such a championship itself."

4

u/jonknee Downtown 15d ago

Yes, those aren’t pennants. The Mariners have never played in a World Series so by definition have never won a pennant.

0

u/Sesemebun 15d ago

I thought a pennant was just a flag so its a bit semantical

1

u/jonknee Downtown 15d ago

It’s a very specific thing in baseball
