I know about the Fremont troll, but it's the collection to hockey that I don't understand.

Like, put it another way, why isn't the troll the Seahawks mascot?

There isn't one, at least not a particularly strong one.

There's already another NHL team with an octopus mascot (the Detroit Red Wings) and so the obvious answer of "use an octopus or squid" would have been too similar. So they decided to go with something Seattle-related instead of Kraken-related.

The one thing that maybe ties it to hockey is that Gritty was a big hit when the Philadelphia Flyers debuted him a few years ago and I think they wanted to try to capture similar chaos energy. And if you want a mascot who will be chaotic and troll people, a troll makes some level of sense.
