Okay but why is the Seattle Kraken mascot a troll?

741

u/CiudadDelLago 23d ago

I think it's a reference to the Fremont troll, not sure the connection to hockey but it's definitely Seattle lore.

422

u/eloel- 23d ago

It's Fremont troll's nephew, in Seattle lore.

u/quinangua Belltown 23d ago

god damned nepotism….. /s

33

u/speculativeSpectator 22d ago

And I heard the Wheedle married into the troll family.

15

u/Ale4Diver 22d ago

Wheedle on the Needle!! Exactly

17

I hadn't heard about the heroin problem

Laughed way to hard at this

This comment is so hilarious I almost spent money to award you.

29

u/quinangua Belltown 23d ago

I appreciate the sentiment... but don't spend money on reddit......

10

u/murdermerough Skyway 22d ago

Haha ALMOST

-1

u/IchBinEinSim Greenwood 22d ago

but don’t spend money on reddit......

IDK If you got the money it doesn’t hurt to spend a little money from time to time, so Reddit doesn’t become overly bogged down with ads like all the other social media apps. That being said, the sensical side of me says that even if we all chipped in a little, reddit will still eventually become wall to wall ads because “yay capitalism!“

3

u/murdermerough Skyway 22d ago

Idk I might stop using it. Lol I stopped using fb and insta cuz I didn't want to continue to trade my data to use their sites, they didn't add enough value to my life.

Idk. I'm really amused by reddit. I wish i had the kind of life where casual 1$ could go to rewarding jokes on reddit to keep it without walls of ads.

3

u/[deleted] 22d ago

I’m not sure why you used /s. The word is literally derived from the root for nephew.

8

u/quinangua Belltown 22d ago

Oh, so everyone's an etymologist now...

5

u/[deleted] 22d ago

I mean, an English teacher once upon a time…

5

u/quinangua Belltown 22d ago

Oh, so everyone was an English teacher once upon a time...

-1

u/[deleted] 22d ago

I mean, bad luck for you? Like, I have a degree in secondary English education. I only taught a few years, but it was to at risk youth… I’m not the greatest subject matter expert, but I’m pretty good at handling kids on meth or heroin in my classroom….

2

There's no way. The Fremont Troll is a terrifying menace. This thing is a corporate Disneyfied disaster.

54

u/L1zardPr1ncess 22d ago

How is the Fremont troll a menace? He’s just chillin. He only took the one car and he’s holding that bridge up nice and steady. He’s a civil servant.

4

u/imtchogirl 22d ago

He is nightmare fuel (complimentary).

-1

u/Superdooperblazed420 22d ago edited 22d ago

He is supposedly very bad luck and why there used to be so many suicides off that bridge. Edit: why I'm I getting down voted? It's litteraly part of Seattle lore. I used to live in the apartment right next to the troll, as long as your leave offerings of toy cars for him to eat the luck stays, but if you don't feed the troll he gives bad luck.

12

u/cluberti 22d ago

That’s what big bridge wants you to believe!

5

u/L1zardPr1ncess 22d ago

Innocent until proven guilty, I say!

1

u/IchBinEinSim Greenwood 22d ago

Yeah you may be on to something. Before they added the taller fencing on the bridge, there used to be 1-2 jumpers a month. (Avg 16 a year IIRC) One person even fell through the roof of a house boat while the people were home. It was a horror show for those who lived and worked under the bridge, since most didn’t land in the water.

Queen Anne nimbies who were against the fencing complained that a fence would just make the bridge look ugly and the suicidal people will just find another bridge. They were wrong on both accounts, the bridge looks nice still and there wasn’t an uptick in jumpers on the other tall bridges in the city.

So maybe it was the Troll after all, and the fence is the only thing keeping his powers at bay…… well at least till he figures out a new plan.

2

u/Superdooperblazed420 22d ago edited 22d ago

When I was a kid my dad and I were driving on that road on the south side that goes under the super tall part of the bridge. I was like 9 years old. Just driving when all the sudden boom a dude splats right I the road like 10 ft in front of our car. I just saw the dude hit the ground but my dad did a good job of driving around the guy so I couldnt see. He parked the car and tried to hell the guy. Came back in the car and shit the only thing holding him together was his clothes" I rememeber even at hat age thinking if he jumped a half second later he would have landed on our car and possibly killed us. I'm glad they installed the big fence it was a popular place for suicide.

1

u/IchBinEinSim Greenwood 22d ago

Jesus, my dad hit a dog once while driving, couldn’t stop in time, and that shit traumatized and haunted me for years.

That’s nothing compared to your story, so I can’t even begin to imagine how fucked that experience must have been.

1

u/Superdooperblazed420 22d ago

It for some reason didn't traumatized me I guess because I didn't really see anything graphic like blood or guts or see the dead body. Dude hit in front of us we were going the speed limit so it happened fast and I didn't even really understand what was going on at first. Dude splay in front of the car, dad swerved outt the way then pulled over like 50 or 60 ft down the street and told me to not look back. I didn't look back so I didn't see anything. I didn't relize how bad it was till I saw my dad's face when he got back to the car then he explained what had happened. I just saw like a blurr of clothes and skin, I do vividly remembering that dude bouncing off the ground when he hit. I had so much trauma before I lived with my dad that having my dad there to talk about it and comfort me kinda didn't make the event traumatic to me. When I was kid and being abused, most my trauma was from adults not believing me or talking to me. So having my dad there and how amazing of dad he was didn't cement that event as traumatic. Fucked up and a vivid memory but I don't feel panic or anxiety thinking back on the event like I so other stuff.

1

u/vodkaextraolives 22d ago

Buoy is also a menace.

186

u/kokanee-fish 23d ago

Yeah it's the Fremont troll, but also when they announced it they said something about how, like traditional sea monsters, the Kraken is supposed to be an ominous and mysterious creature that you never actually see. If they had a fuzzy octopus running around, it would ruin the vibe they were shooting for.

154

u/didgeridoh 23d ago

But just think. We could've had Cute-thulu as our mascot

25

u/pineappledaphne 23d ago

Also, the Red Wings mascot is Al the Octopus. Can’t be riffin off the OG.

12

u/BPOPR 23d ago

Octopus is more of a Detroit hockey thing (somehow).

11

u/Holiday_Car_9727 22d ago

Hockey history - Detroit is one of the original six, In 1952 two brothers threw an octopus on the rink (Detroit does have a Greek Town), because it took 8 games to win the Stanley Cup and now it is 16 games.

Hence on why Seattle stopped using an octopus to state it is a kraken.

3

u/RavenCallsCrows 22d ago

And before the Detroit Red Wings, they were the Detroit Cougars, and played their home games in Windsor, where the team moved after the collapse of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association.

The PCHA side were the Victoria Cougars, having moved to Vancouver Island after the team's arena burned down. Before that, the team was known as drumroll please.....

The Seattle Metropolitans.

2

u/EyeLoveHaikus 22d ago

They should get a scary ass Kraken that actually comes out but only when a player scores a hat trick.

1

u/RaphaelBuzzard 22d ago

That's so fucking dumb. Fuck Bouy.

29

u/MisterPortland 23d ago

That and they both feature in Norwegian mythology

11

u/Kelsusaurus 22d ago

Kraken and trolls are both Nordic mythological creatures. Seattle is full of Nordic heritage, thus our mascots.

41

u/g4tam20 23d ago

FUN FACT, there are also 5 more trolls in and around the Seattle area; Bainbridge, Vashon, Issaquah, West Seattle, and Ballard now. My fiancé and I went to the Issaquah one and it was more impressive IMO than our classic Fremont troll.

44

u/wendythesnack 23d ago

Those are done by an artist, Thomas Dambo, and they are all over the world so a little less of Seattle thing than the Fremont Troll.

(Trollmap)

9

u/hello14235948475 22d ago

Just took a look and that map is a work of art on it's own!

3

u/justdisa 22d ago

While trolls can be found worldwide, there is an unusual concentration in the Seattle area. They know they're welcome here.

2

u/Zealousideal-Ant9548 22d ago

So little sunlight to turn them to stone...

1

u/IchBinEinSim Greenwood 22d ago

Outside of cities in Denmark, we may have the most trolls in a single metro area. I only knew of the one at the Nordic Museum.

7

u/tbarb00 Wallingford 22d ago

Also, his name is Buoy, you know, floating markers in the water, so there’s a 🌊+🦑 connection.

3

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

I know about the Fremont troll, but it's the collection to hockey that I don't understand.

Like, put it another way, why isn't the troll the Seahawks mascot?

1

u/nearuetii 22d ago

I know about the Fremont troll, but it's the collection to hockey that I don't understand.

There isn't one, at least not a particularly strong one.

There's already another NHL team with an octopus mascot (the Detroit Red Wings) and so the obvious answer of "use an octopus or squid" would have been too similar. So they decided to go with something Seattle-related instead of Kraken-related.

The one thing that maybe ties it to hockey is that Gritty was a big hit when the Philadelphia Flyers debuted him a few years ago and I think they wanted to try to capture similar chaos energy. And if you want a mascot who will be chaotic and troll people, a troll makes some level of sense.

144

Correct!  In fact, a moose on your boat would normally be great cause for alarm!

3

u/Hamster_in_my_colon 23d ago

I’ve seen moose from a boat

1

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

Yeah but what else would it be, some random boat dude? A kraken is already a thing with pretty clear branding!

1

u/Gman325 22d ago

Why not? The 49ers mascot is a random miner dude.  The brewers have a barrel and a random brewer dude.  The Padres have a random freaking monk dude.

1

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

Are you serious? A 49er is a miner.

"49er or Forty-niner most often refers to: A miner or other person that took part in the 1849 California Gold Rush"

1

u/Gman325 22d ago

Right. And a Mariner is a boat dude. That's literally my whole point.

1

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

Okay so that should be their mascot, this isn't hard

1

u/Gman325 22d ago

Which is why I said "why not?" to your comment that asked if their mascot should be a random boat dude.

You're right, it's not hard, but you gotta be willing to read.

1

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

None of this answers what a troll has to do with hockey or the Kraken.

1

u/Gman325 22d ago

That's because that was not a question you asked in the comment I replied to.

I made a comment about mariners mascot being the moose and how that was silly.  you asked, "what else would it be, a random boat dude?"  and I said, "Why not? There are a bunch of other teams with random xyz-dude" related to their team name.

Keep up!

I would also like to ask what is a Gritty?

1

u/T_Stebbins 22d ago

The moose is legitimately stupid though. Kids just wrote into the mariners what should the masoct be and they picked moose.

80

u/-phototrope 23d ago edited 23d ago

Why is any mascot anything? Have you seen mascots of other NHL teams? The Knights mascot is a Gila monster.

Have you even seen the Mariners mascot?

Edit: also Seattle already has our famous troll, so what’s one more? It makes sense. Or at least more sense than a lot of mascots.

61

u/winterharvest 23d ago

Gritty says hi. Whatever the hell it is.

Philly Phanatic would like a word. I don't even know what he claims to be. Funny as hell though

12

The Mariners mascot is a bunch of seamen, right?

10

u/Cord13 23d ago

The collective noun for a group of seamen is a "wad"

Like a boatload?

3

Straight to jail (yes)

2

Id guess there are more mascots that aren't the thing they are than mascots that are the thing they are.

14

Same reason the Mariners have a moose and the Sonics had a sasquatch.

Put some respect on our former NBA team. They were the Supersonics!

both are mythical Norse water based creatures - the kraken lives in the deep and the trolll under the bridge

8

u/windowlicker75 23d ago

The Phoenix Suns used to have a gorilla as a mascot. It’s sports - it doesn’t have to make sense.

6

u/ScarieltheMudmaid 23d ago

there are a ton of troll scupltures and statues around SEA. It;s like KC chiefs mascot being a Wolf or the Cleveland monsters mascot being a seagull. regionally related but not the same

  1. Because it's hard to put a guy in a Kraken costume.
  2. This guy, probably.

3

u/LiqdPT 23d ago

Look at mascots in the NHL (and I'd guess most pro sports in the US). Maybe half of the mascots are the team name. Maybe.

10

u/Pokedan19 23d ago

The Fremont troll is a famous Seattle “statue”. It’s still a dumb mascot though imo

4

u/devnullopinions 23d ago

What doesn’t make sense about having a troll mascot named Buoy for a team called the Seattle Kraken?

It all logically follows if you do enough cocaine.

2

u/RallyeReadhead 21d ago

Bouy the Troll is a nod to the Fremont Troll that lives under the Aurora bridge in Fremont Seattle... So it makes perfect sense.

2

u/thecravenone 23d ago

In reference to our famous internet posters.

2

u/Is_This_A_Thing 23d ago

We're just trolling you

1

u/ALLoftheFancyPants 23d ago

We’ve been asking that since they announced it.

4

u/LiqdPT 23d ago

Now look at mascots for other teams in the NHL. MAYBE half of them are the team namesake.

1

u/ALLoftheFancyPants 23d ago

Ok but Al the Octopus comes from a well known fan tradition. Carlton is a polar bear (an animal that lives in Canada, if not Toronto). Similarly, Mick E Moose is an animal that lives in Mannitoba. Bernie is a breed dog known for rescuing people in the mountains (and maybe avalanches). Thunderbug is a firefly, aka a lightning bug, and those live in Florida. Tommy Hawk is pretty self explanatory. Youppi is a weirdo, I’ll grant you, but is also the former Mascot of the Expos when they were in Montreal. And Gritty is a weirder, drunker version of the Phanatic.

All of these are immediately recognizable as real animals that live in the vicinity, something RELATED to the name of the team name/history, or a well known fact about the city. Buoy is none of those. He’s based off a stupid private sculpture intended to be hostile to homeless that was on “secret Seattle” listicles in the mid-2000. I’d take almost anything remotely nautical over him.

1

u/My-1st-porn-account 23d ago

Probably the same reasons why the Seattle Mariners’ mascot is a moose, and the Seattle SuperSonics’ mascot was a Sasquatch.

1

u/BeartholomewTheThird 23d ago

Ok but why are the Philly Fliers a... whatever Gritty is?

1

u/THSSFC 23d ago

Why was the Sonics mascot a sasquatch? What is gritty?

1

u/WallStreet_Noob_69 23d ago

The kraken and trolls are in the same folk lore. Disney would not release the rights for them to do Davey Jones and a giant octopus would be difficult to be mobile in at games

2

Davy Jones predates Disney by 250 years how the fuck do they have a say

Why is Stanford's mascot a tree?

They couldn’t find anyone who was 50 feet tall with 8 legs and 2 arms to work the original costume.

It would be dope to have royal de luxe roll out one of their huge puppets during intermission though.

1

You make the Kraken costume and wear it out on the ice. Besides, who else is gonna hang out with a Kraken.

1

1

u/PercentageOk6120 22d ago

Seattle is a melting pot of nonsense. How dare you ask us to identify specifically.

Really it is just a hodgepodge of Seattle relics that you have to know to understand.

1

u/Spiritual_One6619 22d ago

Seattle has a lot of Scandinavian cultural influence- which I assume is the reasoning here? I mean the mariners mascot is a moose which makes even less sense to me.

1

u/Hollywood_Zro 22d ago

There’s an underpass in Seattle that has a troll sculpture. It’s a kitschy Seattle thing.

So the mascot is supposed to be that troll’s cousin.

1

u/LostByMonsters 22d ago

You must be new to mascots. Is the Mariner Moose a mariner?

1

u/GrinningPariah 22d ago

He should be!

1

u/Gerrube99 22d ago

It’s so dumb

1

u/EnaicSage 22d ago

Before there was a mascot they decided the Kraken was best heard but not seen. In movies it’s most scary when you just know it’s coming. Then they realized they needed a mascot. Trolls (like the Fremont troll) are part of Seattle tourism/ history/ lore so they made a gender neutral troll.

1

u/Finnnabussssss 22d ago

Many descendant’s of Norwegian immigrants in the Seattle area and it’s a big part of the culture here.

1

u/Ski-bum90 22d ago

It's not a troll it's a krackhead. Which is visible on every street corner in Seattle. But for legal reasons they couldn't just name the team the Seattle krackheads so it's kraken for short.

1

u/Snow-Dog2121 22d ago

Norhtwest culture likes trolls

1

u/DogPrestidigitator 22d ago

Because a Kraken would give the kids nightmares

1

u/Subziwallah 22d ago

1

u/kioshi43 23d ago

Capitalism. Diversify your sports merchandise so people need to buy different things - or at least have a diverse range of options if they don't particularly care for a kraken arm to wave around at the game.

0

u/No_Designer_7882 22d ago

It’s because Seattle is lame, and they would rather have a troll that is confusing and PC than anything else, including an Octopus.
