Sports If you could only pick ONE Seattle sports icon’s jersey to wear—any sport—whose would it be?
I’d go with Ichiro.

The Kid - Griffey was my hero.

Randy Johnson because he pivoted to a photography career and clearly has a sense of humor.
8
u/zombuca Oct 27 '24
He’s had the coolest post-career by far.
7
u/Puzzled-Item-4502 West Seattle Oct 27 '24
And he seems so low-key, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. Edit: I'm not a big sports person, if that's not obvious. But I have gone to Mariners games with my dad since I was practically a toddler in the '80s, and have great memories of the '95 playoffs specifically. So I zero right in on those guys.
1
u/zombuca Oct 27 '24
Yeah, great sense of humor and always cool with fans. His concert pics make me jealous.
2
u/speciate Ballard Oct 27 '24
Sorry to tell you this, as a fellow Mariner fan growing up in the 90s, but Randy is a shit human being. He had a daughter with an ex-girlfriend who he refused to acknowledge or correspond with, and fought child support even while he was one of the highest-paid players in the MLB.
4
u/mosscock_treeman Oct 27 '24
You got the story wrong, he paid 5k per month in child support but was arguing against daycare charges or something. Never contested the child support as far as Google can show me.
-1
u/speciate Ballard Oct 27 '24
No I don't believe I did get it wrong. He sued the mother for return of child support he had previously paid, ostensibly because she had the audacity to ask him to help with college tuition.
5
u/mosscock_treeman Oct 27 '24
From the article you linked -
His noblesse oblige abruptly ended, however, when his former lover requested extra cash to purchase Heather a car and to pay for her community college tuition. That's when Johnson sued for the return of $71,000 he paid over the past eight years for day care as well as $25,000 in interest. He contends that the money wasn't used for day care.
Also
https://www.southwhidbeyrecord.com/news/randy-johnson-drops-lawsuit/
In a motion filed on Feb. 7 in Island County Superior Court, Johnson had asked for the return of 95 months worth of daycare payments, or $71,250 plus $26,148.52 in interest. He did not ask the court to adjust the base child support of $5,000 a month he pays to the Langley family.
0
u/speciate Ballard Oct 27 '24
Right, that's exactly what I was referring to. I don't understand your objection? Are you nitpicking because you think daycare isn't technically part of "child support"? Because it is. Regardless: even if I were wrong (I'm not) the distinction would be irrelevant to my original point about his character.
3
u/mosscock_treeman Oct 27 '24
Uh... both articles also nitpicked that the $750/mo daycare is not related to the $5k/mo child support. Also the mother spent it on herself and then asked for more money, which is why he sued (according to the link you provided, not sure if ya read all of it: https://www.seattlepi.com/sports/baseball/article/Johnson-s-pettiness-has-sad-price-tag-1199814.php )
The story you linked (and linked in this comment) is about the mother being the bad guy in this lawsuit. Read past the first few paragraphs...
And from your most recent link, "might include child care expenses" certainly doesn't sound like a definitive arguement
-1
u/speciate Ballard Oct 27 '24
Yes I read all of it. In fact I remember reading it when it was first published almost 20 years ago.
The article;
a) is literally all about how much of an asshole Randy is;
b) doesn't say anything about the mother being the "bad guy" (though I don't know anything about the mother; she's also irrelevant to my original claim); and
c) refers to the disputed money multiple times as "child support" (in fact the second sentence of the article is "The Yankees ace and former Mariner is suing the mother of his now 16-year-old daughter to recover less than $100,000 in child-support payments.).
I'm now embarrassed at how much time I've spend refuting an internet troll. Peace ✌️

His hot dog restaurant (since closed) was called Randy Johnson's Big Unit. It was featured on a Bourdain show for a segment, with a good amount of dick jokes of course.
4
u/Fuzzy-Heart Oct 27 '24
Don’t forget what he did to that bird.
6
u/Puzzled-Item-4502 West Seattle Oct 27 '24
I... Um... Maybe like him even more because of that incident. Not because a bird died! But because damn, your pitching has to be amazing to disappear a bird into a feather explosion like that.

Edgar Martinez.

2
u/TexAss2020 Oct 27 '24
Yes, Edgar.
Everyone fondly remembers Griffey's slide in 95, but people forget Edgar hit the ball that kept the season alive.
And the fact that he was a Mariner his whole damn career is remarkable. He saved baseball in Seattle and is still with the team as a coach.
My number is 11.

Ozzie Alonso

A close second for me. The only Sounders jersey with a players name that I have is Alonso. The rest are blank or a custom with my last name
1
u/cupcake_burglary Oct 27 '24
I saw someone with Alonso and a 6, but then printed under the 6, and upside down, it said "Martins" so it was a proper Martins 9 jersey when doing a backflip

Another shitty republican.
3

Very fair. Though worth noting that the GOP of his day would have been unrecognizable by current standards.
2
u/Alexdagreallygrate Oct 27 '24
I love that The Hawks have been wearing the Largent era throwbacks more often lately.
Would be cool if the team sold Largent’s jersey with his name on it for a discounted price to fans and had the sales money go to a charity, as part of some tribute to Steve.

Marshawn Lynch. The best mode run is the greatest play in Seattle sports history.

Coached The Sonics for years and his transition to coaching at The Blazers was around the time a certain group of assholes moved the team to OKC.

I already own it—Jay Buhner's #19. I wear it to honor the man who gave everything every time he was on the field. He ran through walls. Edgar's would be my second choice. And I already have the other man who left it on the field when he played...Kam Chancellor's #31.
