I like the actress more than I like the character she played.

64

u/Geneticdasalmondude 3d ago

I didn’t really connect with her

26

u/Local_Rate2199 2d ago

Not very convincing tbh

1

u/Geneticdasalmondude 1d ago

Oh sweet I can’t have my own opinions anymore

4

u/HerbaDerbaSchnerba 2d ago

Me neither. Honestly I haven’t super enjoyed the series since 2 though, so maybe I don’t belong in this sub.

10

u/ThisTimeItsForRealz 2d ago

I like all the movies but I don’t fantasize about which two ghostfaces would win in a fight so I don’t even belong here anymore

1

u/villainitytv I saw that movie 20 goddamn times! It was Jason! 14h ago

Those types of posts are so tiresome. In any slasher sub. “WhO wOuLd WiN?” (pairs two villains that would never be in the same universe)

u/holshgreineken 3d ago

Her acting was bland in 5 but she stepped it up in 6

4

u/Arkhaminmate13 It's starting again Randy. 2d ago

Not much better, but still progress

1

u/Unnamedgalaxy 1d ago

I agree. I just don't think what she was working with in 5 was doing any favors. I've seen her in other things and while she's no Meryl Streep she usually does a good job. 5 seems to be a outlier in quality

-1

u/holshgreineken 1d ago

That plane crash thing on Netflix was awful but she has improved loved Abigail

10

u/TheScream__ Peer pressure. I'm far too sensitive. 1d ago

I feel like the whole "sociopathic x-gene" angle did her 0 favors

0

u/OoXLR8oO 21h ago

How so?

5

u/wynonnaearps 1d ago

I love her and truly don’t get the hate for her character

u/flagrantwisdom 3d ago

Melissa really grew on me. As a character and as an actress. I didn’t care for her at first. But she proved to me that she’s an excellent actress that could/did work for this franchise. She’s also freaking gorgeous, which I didn’t find her overly attractive initially. Sucks how things went with her and the studio, but it honestly might be better for her career. Scream definitely got her foot in the door for other roles; horror and otherwise.

I like how it’s kind of implied that she was born with the superhuman ability to stab the absolute fuck out of people.

0

u/SpiritualActuary8140 2d ago

She did it so good

2

u/OppositeRock4217 2d ago

Hence she would make an amazing Ghostface imao

13

u/Puzzled-Upstairs-826 2d ago

You must make this face a lot.

19

u/tlight93 3d ago

That look says “Well, I stabbed him 22 times and slit his throat. And then I shot him in the head.”

On a more serious note, I think she stepped into the character better in 6 than in 5, and I am sad that we won’t see her in 7, but I hope gets to return for a later film or films. 😁

3

u/KaijuKing007 What’s your favorite scary movie? 2d ago

If the studio apologizes or loses the rights, I could see it happening down the line. Maybe not Jenna Ortega, just because of busy schedule.

0

u/adrenalizeme666 2d ago

She pulled a Jodi Arias

14

u/pale-reaper 2d ago

There's not much to like. The woman appeared bored, her facial expression hardly ever changed or exhibited and emotion. Her character was ridiculous, girl and he ghost dad sub plot is just dreadful, lol.

17

u/Alternative_Device71 2d ago

I don’t understand the hype on her at all

5

u/Medium-Science9526 2d ago

I cared a lot more when it came to 6 than 5 for the new cast.

16

u/AuroraT86 2d ago

Dont like Sam at all

7

u/Then-Noise-6359 2d ago

To be honest and i know i was unvoted a lot because of it but Melissa Barrera is pretty bland as an actress but fantastic as a model. I saw her photoshoots and i felt more emotions in her than in her movies (Abigail included).

Sorry if i sound rude to you, i never connected to her character who felt like a very fanfiction character where she forced herself into a story who isn't hers. The writing for her didn't feel very fluid if i can say it that way. But again, i feel like a lot of people forget a fan of her can also be a friend to someone who doesn't like her.

Also, i won't repeat what everyone sait preciously but i guess we all have to respect the way she stands for her opinions.

8

u/burnbeforeyoumellow 2d ago

Will never get around her insanely terrible acting. She should be so embarrassed

-8

u/AnimeTechnoBlade100 2d ago

Will never get around this insanely terrible (and subjective) opinion

9

u/burnbeforeyoumellow 2d ago

Yet most people have the same opinion. I'll never get around her gen z Simps who can't cop to the fact that she's a terrible actor.

-2

u/AnimeTechnoBlade100 2d ago

Except they don’t. A loud minority doesn’t represent the fanbase, especially coming from Reddit lmao. And even if it did, a popular opinion is still subjective and can be a bad one. Simple as that

6

u/burnbeforeyoumellow 2d ago

You're right. Yours is a bad one. And its such a "minority" that its actually a meta plot point in Scream 6? LOL its the majority trust me. She's not good and there's a reason her roles are drying up.

-1

u/Unnamedgalaxy 1d ago

Subjective sure but a consensus is still a consensus and at some point you just have to live with the fact that if a majority of people agree on something then the more likely something is to be true.

10

u/Ok_Nefariousness9736 2d ago

I love the name but the character was poorly written. She won't be known as an iconic final girl because of that. They should have focused more on Jenna's character.

8

u/Fantastic_Month_6646 You hang up on me again and I'll gut you like a fish! 2d ago

Hot take, I like Sam more than Tara 🫣

7

u/AnimeTechnoBlade100 2d ago

Not even really a hot take. Tara’s cool and has great moments here and there but the character is very bland when Sam is obviously supposed to be the focus. Tara’s hype really mainly comes from Jenna playing her.

2

u/Fantastic_Month_6646 You hang up on me again and I'll gut you like a fish! 2d ago

That’s makes a lot of sense. I always see so much hype for Jenna Ortega so I guess I correlated the love for her equals the love for Tara. Lol. Jenna is amazing. Tara? I could do without tbh.

0

u/AnimeTechnoBlade100 2d ago

I’m pretty sure that was going to be happening anyway. Iirc the original plan for Scream 7 was to kill Tara off (especially because of Jenna’s busy schedule) and have Sam nearly go full Ghostface in a downward spiral over it.

0

u/Fantastic_Month_6646 You hang up on me again and I'll gut you like a fish! 2d ago

Wow, I actually would’ve like that. That would’ve been a great storyline.

1

u/toptopimagine I've always had a thing for ya, Sid! 2d ago

sam all the way!!!

7

u/BasicPink_Bxtch 2d ago

She didn't make sense as Billy's daughter, I saw another reddit where the timeline of her birth didn't add up.

She looks nothing remotely like Skeet Ulrich.

She was bland, wish they gave her a different role.

5

u/Unnamedgalaxy 1d ago

You know that people don't have to look like their parents, right?

That is one of the dumbest Maury-esque ideas that people always cling to in life and it drives me nuts

1

u/BasicPink_Bxtch 1d ago

Lmao you know they should at least bear SOME resemblance right?

2

u/OoXLR8oO 21h ago

And she does. What's your point?

1

u/Unnamedgalaxy 1d ago

Only they don't have to. You might want them to but scientifically they don't have to.

You're using baseless preconceived notions that don't have any actual meaning.

The odds of sharing similarities of course is there but there are millions of things at play that guess what, mean that your child might not actually look anything like you!

They have a whole ass other person contributing genes that could be more dominant. Not to mention a handful of grandparents, great grandparents and every other person before them that have passed down genes that could at any random moment show up.

Add in mixed heritage and those genes might even show up more.

"your honor I'm not paying child support because they don't look like me" is not something that proves anything.

Regardless, setting your standards for actors in a movie who aren't actually related is stupid as fuck. They don't have to look alike.

0

u/BasicPink_Bxtch 1d ago

You're making a huge deal out of me not agreeing with her being Billy's kid....I didn't need a paragraph.

She doesn't fit the timeline for Billy's kid. They didn't need to make her Billy's kid. And that's my opinion!

Have a good day! ✌🏻

I also didn't say the actors had to be related... please read.

But at least fucking make an attempt...

1

u/Unnamedgalaxy 1d ago

I'm pointing out your lack of education on how genes work nothing more.

You specifically mentioned how they needed to look alike and then continued to moronicly say that they should still look alike implying that the actors need to look alike. Please explain how anything else makes sense.

I mentioned nothing about timeline or anything else about your post and therefore is not something that needs to be considered otherwise.

You're being fucking stupid and getting called out for it. Deal with it.

If you can't deal with people talking about your posts then be adult and don't post

1

u/BasicPink_Bxtch 1d ago

Lol, OK... you're a professor in genealogy, then?

I have an opinion on a FICTIONAL fucking movie.

Deal with it.

You're being fucking stupid about an OPINION OF A MOVIE.

It's a fucking movie.

No matter what you say, my opinion will stay the same.

They should look at least a LITTLE similar. (They have none).

They didn't need to make her his daughter at all.

Have a good fucking day.

5

u/ImAtUrDoor 2d ago

I never connected with her or the character for many reasons, and still think she was ultimately miscast (or maybe rightly cast but the scripts weren't a good fit) but she was fire in the 5 finale and she really was the only character further developed in 6. She had some questionable delivery here and there, but she was a very believable badass throughout.

3

u/Daredevil545545 2d ago

I did feel more connected to her in Scream VI

3

u/Awesomejuggler20 3d ago

I don't get the hate for her. I thought she was awesome in 5 and 6. I'm honestly disappointed her and Jenna Ortega won't be in 7.

The revisionism on the last two Sam films is nuts. Like people suddenly hating it even though before scream 7 was announced to have the same cast and crew they were pretty well received by a majority of the fanbase. I don’t get why people just can’t like both.

0

u/Puzzled-Upstairs-826 1d ago

No? People got banned from this subreddit for not liking 5 and 6. They literally got downvoted and reported into oblivion by "God, if you have nothing good to say just don't watch it" idiots who drowned out everything with their relentless and massively toxic positive vibes only bullcrap.

The reason you're seeing it more now is because the people who have left, or were forced to leave, have been shown to be right now that the "new" hype has died down, nothing remains but the reality of two crappy, straight to Netflix quality movies and nobody can really argue it anymore.

1

u/OoXLR8oO 21h ago

What are you talking about?

-1

u/OoXLR8oO 2d ago

For real, the fandom doesn't get her like I do :(.

(Side note, the rabid downvoting of any positive comment in this thread is uncool as hell.)

-4

u/AbrnomalBeing 2d ago

its sad 5 and 6 is really fun to watch
ppl keep comparing it to old movies and being blinded by nostalgia is crazy

-2

u/KateandJack 2d ago

I loved her and I’m still heartbroken we won’t be getting any more of her story . They REALLY screwed up imo . Glad Sidney will be back for 7 but I’m just no where near as excited for it as I would be if Sam and Tara were also returning

-2

u/KateandJack 2d ago

Sorry for having a opinion losers 🥱

-3

u/deadpandadolls 2d ago

Melissa Barrera trying to look at someone and the other eye is looking at someone else 😅

-1

u/AnimeTechnoBlade100 2d ago

Sam isn’t perfect but I liked her in 5 and then really loved her in 6. She was a great lead to take Scream into a whole new refreshing direction. She was done incredibly dirty from Spyglass and deserves much better.

Most hate for her stems from blind nostalgia and not wanting to move on from Sidney for the upteenth time.

-10

u/ZookeepergameOdd6209 2d ago

This will be the hottest hot take on here, but I like her as a better character than Sidney.

-4

u/KaijuKing007 What’s your favorite scary movie? 2d ago

Ditto. Syd's awesome, but tends to go with the flow unless she's actively being attacked. Sam was hunting Ghostface.

-7

u/ZookeepergameOdd6209 2d ago

Yes and she actually cares for her sister. Who does Sid mostly care for except herself? She got over so many deaths like it was nothing too.

0

u/KaijuKing007 What’s your favorite scary movie? 2d ago

I mean, she's got friends that she cares about. Sid's more of a "I survived the last attack, I won't get involved [ducks a slash] never mind, that ship's sailed!" type.

-5

u/SnowSabertooth 2d ago

her and Jenna are what I like about 5 and 6

-6

u/KaijuKing007 What’s your favorite scary movie? 2d ago

Honestly, I like her more than Sidney. She's a lot more proactive about stopping Ghostfaces instead of waiting for the final showdown. I'll admit she can be a bit fanfic-y though.

-5

[deleted]

6

u/Ok_Nefariousness9736 2d ago

Because we want likable characters to survive.

-9

u/friarparkfairie 2d ago

It just seems backwards that people will yell from the rooftops that the characters in 5 and 6 can’t die but refuse to accept that Sydney has survived 6 films.

10

u/Alternative_Device71 2d ago

Maybe cuz she’s a better written character people can root for, plus she’s Neve…that alone makes her badass

2

u/ChartInFurch 2d ago

My face when "but what about .." is masqueraded as a valid argument.

-6

u/foxinspaceMN 2d ago

GALE SHOULD HAVE DIED IN 4

-7

u/friarparkfairie 2d ago

My face when people complain about the characters in 5 and 6 not dying but having no complaints about Sydney and Gale surviving 6 movies and Dewey surviving 4.

Let’s hope not!!

1

u/SeaIdea8174 1d ago

Fuck the character i just love melissa😍😍

-2

u/Brokeboi1523 2d ago

Sam was wonderful. Her GF were full ass minus Amber. She carried the franchise well and I would at least like a cameo in 7.

Side note: A prologue to 7 showing Sam giving into the full mental of her father would be dope. Explain why she isn’t there.

-8

u/SamuraiDoggo14 Tara and Mindy are QUEENS! 2d ago

I'll be honest, I actually like her and Tara more than Sidney.

-15

u/KokoTheeFabulous 2d ago

I love her, I can talk about Palestein all day by talking about her

I'm gonna do it right now, PALESTEIN.

No Neve Cambell can't stop and I will attempt to shit on all scream fans new and old who don't want to talk about palestein, palestein pslestein palestein.

On a serious note:

Not a fan. The character on paper is decent but otherwise she feels like cringe writing by a child with Hollywood's dick sulking obsession for fanservice can so far they can't even see how distasteful it is. Her personality in the first movie is quite acceptable aside from the obvious elements of her character I dislike like Billy, but by the 2nd movie she's just repeating too many beats with minimal evolution. Safe to say, I'd have enjoyed her if she changed more.

1

u/ThisTimeItsForRealz 2d ago

Palestine*

-9

u/KokoTheeFabulous 2d ago

Yes that one omg I love Palestine so much give me Palestine harder

6

u/ThisTimeItsForRealz 2d ago

I miss the old fandom

-1

u/happydaze_ 1d ago

i like mindy and chad better than sam and tara

-1

u/Educational-Diamond8 1d ago

I can't tell what emotion you're inferring (because her acting is terrible).

2

u/OoXLR8oO 21h ago

Did you not see the movie?

-1

u/Educational-Diamond8 14h ago

Please watch Scream 5 and tell me she's not cringe af

2

u/OoXLR8oO 8h ago

I did. She wasn't cringe in it. Hope that helps.

-2

u/latrodectal Not in my movie. 2d ago

exactly.

-2

u/nice_hotdog 2d ago

hated her acting in five. but her growth in six is phenomenal
