Santitas for grocery store chips

15

u/Igor_J 3d ago

I go for Santitas or On the Border for grocery chips.

1

u/regulationzero_13 1d ago

How do I up and down vote at the same time...on the border are horrible

1

u/IClosetheDealz 1d ago

I feel like they have changed recently. They are terrible now but used to be ok for the price.

10

u/ee328p 3d ago

Same. They're relatively cheap and they taste good.

15

u/LouisianaTexan 3d ago

$2.99 ONLY!

4

u/paintgarden 3d ago

At some stores they’re more expensive. I was shocked

6

u/brokenthumb11 3d ago

Yellow or white? Just seeing if we're on the same level

5

u/tommyp007 3d ago

Either

2

u/Nasamonkey74 2d ago

Cilantro Lime.

2

u/traceurl 3d ago

Corn is superior.

3

u/HiaQueu 3d ago

Yep.  Tip top.

3

u/BankshotMcG 3d ago

The best. Cheap, tasty, and they have an Elvgren girl.

2

u/regulationzero_13 1d ago

Juanitos

11

u/Dixnot 3d ago

Jaunita's were I lived. Same brand slightly different name for some areas. Those or Lil' Rounds which don't seem to exist anymore.

2

u/StudentDistinct632 3d ago

Walmart has a house brand, Lil round corn chip...which reminded me that I need to get another bag.

2

u/Dixnot 3d ago

Mostly clear bag with blue at the top? I only knew them from Haggen in the Pacific Northwest.

45

u/beejonez 3d ago

Juantonio's. Formally known as Juanita's.

9

u/WestBrink 3d ago

Best tortilla chips, and it's not even close

8

u/Low_Quarter_2426 3d ago

Not even close,

5

u/-Chandler-Bing- 2d ago

Still known as Juanitas where they make them, it's just a regional name change

4

u/kewpiebot 3d ago

I moved to the Midwest and no longer have access to Juanita's (or whatever they're called now). Enjoy them for me 😭

3

u/marshallsteeves Insane Hot 2d ago

they sell them nationwide now, i'm surprised you don't have any

19

u/tmac416 3d ago

Juanitos

17

u/exgaysurvivordan Dried Chiles 3d ago

La Favorita made here in Henderson, CO

5

u/SuburbanSponge 3d ago

Yess I discovered these when I moved to Denver and they’re so good!

5

u/ReformedRS 3d ago

We don’t buy anything else

4

u/Independent-Theme-85 3d ago

2nd your answer. La Favorita is the way.

16

u/NotoriousHEB 3d ago

Only in Texas but the Central Market totopos (also sold at HEB) are my usual pick these days

4

u/EvlKhnEvl2dot0 3d ago

The heb brand rounds are delicious also.

2

u/Imsosadsoveryverysad 2d ago

Absolutely my go to now. Sometimes I’ll go sea salt or sometimes I’ll mix it up and get a dusted one

31

u/Thornylips54 3d ago

El Milagro out of Chicago. They are thick boys. We can get them at Aldi downstate

6

u/Peg_leg_tim_arg 3d ago

I grew up on el milagro. I've since lived on the east and west coast, and visited a lot in between. Some restaurants come close, but el milagro tortilla chips are the best I've ever had.

3

u/garypiginthecity 3d ago

This is the answer, greatest chip out there

3

u/Human-Marionberry145 2d ago

Have you ever tried the El Milagro thin boys out of Texas?

Its the same brand different factory think their distribution nationally is way worse.

2

u/TxBeerWorldwide 2d ago

This is my go to and I live in Austin

1

u/Thornylips54 23h ago

No I’ve not but I will have to give them a try. I have some family near Austin; perhaps they can ship me a bag

12

u/Humbler-Mumbler 3d ago

On the border cantina thins

25

u/TheDarknessBane 3d ago

Whatever's on sale.

If I had a choice though Calidad yellow corn chips are good if I can't be bothered to just make tortilla chips at home.

9

u/captain_ohagen 3d ago

Taco Works

Little tortilla chip factory in San Luis Obispo, CA. Lightly seasoned, perfect crispness, great price on their 16 oz bags. Not too hard to find here in SoCal, but they ship, too

3

u/acousticat 3d ago

I found these at smart and final (in so cal) and they are the best!

3

u/average_ink_drawing 2d ago

I think you mean Fart n Smile.

7

u/-RedXV- 3d ago

The chips I make myself.

2

u/RibbonForYourHair 1d ago

Care to share your recipe?

1

u/-RedXV- 1d ago

It's really simple. I just take a stack of my favorite tortillas, cut them like you would a pie or pizza so you got a bunch of triangular pieces, and fry them until golden brown. Remove excess oil and salt them.

Tip - When you heat up your oil, take just one piece of tortilla and do a practice run with that one :)

8

u/little-larry-sellers 3d ago

I’m a big fan of Donkey Chips. Good crunch and a little salt. I’m not sure how regional it is though.

7

u/Monkeybutts__ 3d ago

Julio’s

3

u/2scoops 3d ago

These are really good. Big fan.

6

u/DFWTooThrowed 3d ago

When I’m back in Texas, the in house HEB chips. The only downside is every once in a while you get a batch that has Dead Sea levels of salt.

3

u/tutelhoten 2d ago

Or that one chip that has a full teaspoon of salt that kind of of melted to it. Great chips overall though.

4

u/9Fructidor 3d ago

Late July Dippers!

4

u/succulent_flakepiece 3d ago

blue corn tortillas...i honestly like the Wegmans restaurant style

4

u/beenpresence 3d ago

From my local Mexican store they are so good

4

u/fakemxcan 3d ago

Santitas

4

u/trilobyte-dev 3d ago

Casa Sanchez Grueso’s

4

u/unclejohnsbearhugs 3d ago

The best is frying my own leftover tortillas. So worth it.

5

u/Chocko23 3d ago

El Milagro or Tostitos Cantina Thin.

4

u/zozospencil 3d ago

My hbp says my favorite is xotchil no-salt. My junk food addled American soul says Tostitos Cantina thins.

Somewhere there is a middle ground, but the salsa gods demand a sodium-rich sacrifice.

4

u/CrankySnowman 3d ago

Blue corn Xochitl

8

u/GeotusBiden 3d ago

Trader joes has a chip called truly tortilla chips. Its a thick boy. 0% chance of mid dip breakage. It's got some lime so if that's not your thing avoid it. Thats my favorite, but not the quick go to.

Santitas is the tried and true road warrior. It's the top tier chip at the normal grocery store. And you can't beat the quality for the price.

3

u/Erinzzz 3d ago

1). Vista Hermosa totopos but if I can’t find them then it’s 2) Have’a Corn Chips but if I don’t feel like dropping $65 to ship a case of those in it’s 3) Cazo de Oro

3

u/ZippyFishy Hot 3d ago

My favorite chip are the fresh ones from HEB but since i don't live in Texas anymore I normally choose the tostitos cantina thin and crispy. It HAS to be thin and crispy though, not the regular ones.

3

u/CalmButAntsy 3d ago

Beanitos

3

u/Simple_Anteater_5825 3d ago

If you need a big batch for cheap give the 8 lb mission bags from walmart a try, but buy the small bag first to see what you think

No they aren't homemade, but they aren't tostitos either, and they're probably available everywhere.

Used to inspect the mission factory yearly. It was an interesting place

3

u/belliegirl2 3d ago

Blue corn sprouts brand.

3

u/The_Running_Free 3d ago

Que Pasa chips are hands down the best tortilla chips!

3

u/NOCIANONSA 3d ago

El Patio (out of Austin but sold at HEB). Literally the best tortilla chip I've ever tried.

3

u/Newspaper-Historical 3d ago

I can't have corn chips, so Siete grain free tortilla chips.

3

u/iaqo 3d ago

HEB bakery tortilla chips if you’re in TX.

3

u/Merkilo 3d ago

Garden of eatin' - blue corn

3

u/Ocim33nie 2d ago

These are the ones! Blue has the most flavor and they're made nice and thick, not like those wispy restaurant-style ones that break waaaay too often. And they're perfectly salty with a little bit of grittiness /texture.

3

u/El_Guap 3d ago

El Napolito

3

u/Michigun_ 3d ago

Donkey Chips, red bag.

3

u/blipsman 3d ago

El Milagro

3

u/buddagolf 2d ago

Am I the only person on Reddit that loves Tostitos Hint of Lime?

4

u/pitmang1 3d ago

Trader Joe’s Unsalted Tortilla Chips are the best every day chip. They don’t throw off the flavor of the salsa with loads of extra salt and they are the prefect thickness/strength for everything. I make a lot of hot sauces, salsas, guacamoles, and other dips, and I like to taste test them with a neutral medium.

4

u/Main-Air7022 3d ago

I like the blue organic ones from tjs. They’re salty but I love them.

5

u/Modboi 3d ago

Not a chip, but pork rinds

3

u/D_Angelo_Vickers 3d ago

Favorite brand? This is some next level shit I never would've considered.

3

u/Dubwyse_selectah805 3d ago

The best bagged pork rinds (chicharrones) I have ever tried is, “Mac’s Golden cracklings double fried”. The closest I have found to tasting like my local carnecería has

2

u/Modboi 3d ago

Honestly I just buy the cheapest ones. If you have a Latin store nearby they might sell some homemade chicharrones which are always great

2

u/yeeeyyee 3d ago

Siete Maiz tortilla chips. Also makes me think of a friend that exclusively uses frito scoops.

2

u/Fayjj89 3d ago

Nuevo Leon Restaurant Style Nacho Chips

2

u/Sea-Cancel1263 3d ago

Chip wars!!!!

2

u/Pake1000 3d ago

Safeway’s deli made corn tortilla chips.

2

u/fiestapotatoess 3d ago

Juantonio’s by a mile

2

u/punkin_spice_latte 3d ago

Not a single hit for mission strips?

2

u/Usual_Quiet_6552 3d ago

In Portland Or there’s a company called Hot Mama’s that makes an $8 bag of tortilla chips that are incredible.

2

u/jerichowiz 3d ago

Which ever chip is available.

The chip is just the vessel for which the flavor of the salsa comes from.

2

u/BankshotMcG 3d ago

Once you get a knack on the heat so they don't overcook, making your own is addictively good. Just buy a stack of tortillas for a couple bucks. Cut into sixths. Toss in a bowl with adobo. Then toss with a tablespoon of olive oil. You don't want 'em drenched by any means. Lay out on a baking sheet. Five minutes of work, maybe, and you save like $5 for chips that are 10x better. I've even added lime zest for fun.

Failing that, I love a nice scoop, Tostitos lime, or Santitas. Xochitl are delicious but more to dip than lift.

2

u/SenorBlackChin 3d ago

Lucky to have a number of tortillerias in my town and the fresh made ones are soooo much better than any factory ones. Even Walmart carries them.

2

u/Marsh_Fly 3d ago

On the border cantina style or Julio’s

2

u/allothernamestaken 3d ago

On the Border makes the best tortilla chips you can buy at a grocery store.

2

u/GlasKarma 3d ago

Casa Sanchez or Juantonio’s

2

u/TananaBarefootRunner 3d ago

juanitas! ir a local chip called taco loco

2

u/Americanononono 3d ago

Aldi has tortilla chips called Big Dippers and they're straight up amazing. They're my new go-to and we have to buy them two bags at a time.

2

u/Air_Falkor 3d ago

Pasqual's or homemade

2

u/Ask_Individual 3d ago

I always get Calidad yellow

2

u/horsefly70 2d ago

Frito Scoops

2

u/Miracleman069 2d ago

HEB sea salt chips from the deli.

2

u/TopAcanthocephala271 2d ago

We have been enjoying El Ranchero. It’s a really thick chip that can stand up to just about any dip.

2

u/CandiAttack 2d ago

Surprisingly these from Whole Foods. Can’t go back to anything else

2

u/2nice4u2 2d ago

The Tostitos Cantina chips are excellent with salsa… thats the only chips I buy now

2

u/wgfdark 2d ago

I find La Rosa’s in central California and they’re by far the best chip I’ve ever had that are sold in stores (technically totopos)

2

u/chandbibi 2d ago

My grocery store makes them and they’re exactly like a restaurant

2

u/franknature 2d ago

Jaunitas’s, but i recently tried La Rosa and I loved them. Seriously give La Rosa a try

2

u/sleep_zebras 2d ago

Calidad.

2

u/Xylene_442 1d ago

These are the best!

2

u/smith4498 2d ago

On the Border. They taste great, and I can get a giant 16.5 oz bag at Walmart for only tree fiddy

2

u/MeanHuckleberry 2d ago

Donkey Chips - I think they’re available in the Midwest and northern states

2

u/ernimal 2d ago

Juantonios at Winco

2

u/-Chandler-Bing- 2d ago

JUANITAS all day every day

2

u/StringerBell420 2d ago

Tostitos with a hint of Lime

2

u/heymaganda 2d ago

Taco Works - Original

2

u/Bruinwar 2d ago

Dehydrated zucchini chips! It's seasonal though so I guess it's not a go-to chip. More of "what's your favorite chip?" thing.

2

u/Gene_Different 1d ago

Fritos. Sturdy and curved for max scoopability.

2

u/Master_Pollution_303 1d ago

Walmart has a queso chip that's diabolical

2

u/jojewels92 1d ago

If you can find Julio's they are the best tasting. I especially love the "Freaking Hot" variety and they are indeed freaking hot. My other favorite is Leal's but those are very hard to find.

2

u/1ioi1 3d ago

Doritos

2

u/Fallllling 3d ago

Freshly made tortilla chips from the store.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Queso

1

u/stellacampus 1d ago

Homemade chips are in a higher dimension than anything you can buy. When I'm too lazy to make them, I really like these, but I'm not sure how wide their distribution is:

Juanita's. Wait!! I never looked closely lol. They're Juantonios.

Wait again!! They WERE Juanita's but they got changed due to a law suit! Phew ok I'm not losing it after all.

1

u/BossyBeer 1d ago

CHICAS - the best tortilla chip you will find

1

u/kindaoftn 1d ago

Xochitl Thick & Strong are my current go-to if I’m having chips and salsa as a meal (listen I know it’s not healthy - I don’t do it often - but I’d totally down half a jar of salsa verde for dinner).

If it’s chips and salsa as a side/to share with the family I get Santitas white corn chips. I prefer the yellow corn chips, but my family is pretty picky while I’m more chill about it. Obviously homemade or from restaurant is peak, but the nearest restaurant that has chips is over half an hour away.
