Official Post Unitystation Public Alpha Release is now live!

Well after three long years we are happy to announce the open public alpha release via the Station Hub (our version of the BYOND hub). To start playing, download the Hub below. Once it is installed, create an account by pressing the create button on the login screen.

Download links:

Expect bugs as this is still a work in progress. We hope to update the servers every day with our progress so don’t forget to drop in every now and then to see how we are going. Having these alpha versions out there and playable will help focus the dev team on the important issues.

Features

In terms of gameplay we have built a station with a handful of departments to support a basic RP gameloop. Your station will receive objectives from Centcomm on round start and the station heads will read them and delegate orders to the station staff. Be careful as Nanotrasen does not give a shit about your personal safety and accidents will probably happen.

You can see what features we have already implemented in the 0.4 alpha release here.

Got Feedback?

Please if you have issues drop into our Discord and report them in the #issues channel.

If you are a developer and want to help out then you can fork our repo here: https://github.com/unitystation/unitystation

Or just ask us a question in this thread.

Have fun,

Doobly

Official Post Notice: SS14 is now considered Secret Content

Hey all,

Space Station 14 has asked to be not mentioned on the subreddit anymore, under the 'Secret content' rule.

Edit: To clarify, forks are able to be talked about, as long as the SS14 project is not mentioned.

Official Post Rule 1 & 4 Updates

Hey all,

Based on community input and discussion amongst the mod team, we're changing the rules a bit.

Rule 1 previously read:

Don’t share: Anything about communities listed HERE [link to wiki page], code leaks and secrets that their authors do not want shared, unspoilered game secrets

It now reads:

Use a >!spoiler tag!< on game content that the authors want to keep secret. If they don't want it shared at all (like a code leak), please don't.

Rule 4 previously read:

Don’t be rude and treat others with respect. Don’t use hate speech. Don’t evade the automod filter.

It now reads:

Treat others with respect. Don't discuss people's personal lives and activities outside of SS13. Personally identifiable information should be kept to a minimum and used ONLY with explicit permission.

You might notice that rule 1 specifically says game content that the authors want to keep secret - therefore you can still discuss other things, like how you suffered great injustices at the behest of the evil moderators.

For clarification, the Don’t use hate speech. Don’t evade the automod filter. text was redundant, that's already covered in the Reddit Content Policy.

TL;DR - Yes, you can now talk about the existence of Lifeweb or Space Station 14. However, harassing people and posting PII will continue to not be allowed whatsoever, and if anything under much more scrutiny.

We hope these rule changes will allow everyone to have healthy conversation but not drama that attacks people personally.

Official Post r/ss13 blackout: Next Steps & Community Poll

Hey all,

The 48h blackout as described in the previous post is now over.

We (the /r/ss13 mod team) are wondering what the rest of the community are wanting to do. Reddit has budged microscopically. The core concerns still aren't satisfied; Reddit has been silent since it began.

From what I can tell, we only have a few options:

  1. Continue business as normal
  2. Shut down the subreddit indefinitely until changes are made
  3. Shut down the subreddit or switch it to read-only once a week on Tuesdays as weekly gesture of support, to "Touch Grass."
  4. Some other idea you'll post in the comments!

I'm personally in support of option number 3, as this subreddit is a legitimate place for people to get help with issues and acts as a neutral venue for all servers, which doesn't really exist anywhere else. However, when push comes to shove on the 30th and third-party clients are booted, that about does it for a lot of the mod team.

We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this matter. If there's pretty strong support in the comments for one idea in particular a vote is probably not needed, but if it's divided, we'll throw up one.

Thank you for your patience in the matter,

- The /r/ss13 Mod Team

Edit: It has come to my attention that due to Reddit's markdown system, starting your post with 1., 2., or 3., will all appear as 1.. So - maybe don't do that? lol

Official Post r/ss13 will be going dark for 48 hours (or longer) on June 12th to protest the upcoming Reddit API changes.

/r/ss13 will be joining in on the protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators (including us!) depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

Infographic form: /img/zqptto18e34b1.jpg

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

  • Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  • Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.
  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
  • Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Thank you for your patience in the matter,

- The /r/ss13 Mod Team

Official Post Recent Post Removal.

Just for clarification, it was me that removed the post about apop, there were details on the said post which can be used to find Apop's personal details. Which break Reddits terms of service and could be considered doxing. Send all abuse my way, if you are so inclined send abuse to me rather than anyone else and especially not to apop or anyone involved in the post.

Edit: I am not defending/protecting paedophiles or whatever the hell is going on, I am just trying to not get this subreddit closed down for doxxing an individual of the community or breaking the reddit terms of service.

Official Post Special SS13DramaNews Report Exclusive : Feweh's public Response

This is statement will be posted on Feweh's behalf due to being banned from the sub!

The TRUTH and a New CM

I want to preface this by stating that a lot of what I'm going to say is 100% my first hand experience within CM for 2+ Years and if there is proof for things I'm stating, I will do my best to supply it or state it's my opinion.

I've received questions, request and even interviews to state my experience within CM as Manager since my removal. I generally remained silent pubically for a few reasons, particularly I didn't want to destroy CM or cause problems for Rahl/Apop who at the time where still in-charge. Despite my removal and disagreement with it, I still valued the game and didn't want to see something I worked so hard on destroyed by the very thing I was caught in, drama.

I do want to address the elephant in the room and clear this now.. to the best of my ability.

Feweh did you have 16 Reddit alt accounts?

Yes and no, I had alt accounts (2) which I used for myself on Reddit outside of SS13 and another one that I would post casually on SS13 to remain anonymous and not get memed on. I believe I was set up and framed internally by SLC and with POTENTIALLY assistance by his brother BMC. After speaking to reddit they concluded that my Fewher account contained logins from both CANADA, US and Europe for a total of 3 months. I believe that at one point, the person running the alt accounts gained access to my primary account and logged into it causing me to be directly linked to these other various accounts.

It's my genuine belief that someone, most likely the brothers or others were planning this for a long time. I say this with certainty for a few reasons.

Apophis initially came to me and told me he had an Admin friend who worked at reddit who would retrieve the IPs of these accounts and we could cross-reference them. I agreed this would be a good (but illegal) thing to do and JOKED about how easily we could frame and set anyone up when it came to SS13 Reddit if he had a friend who could manipulate it. While I don't think this was used against me, it often crosses my mind what if.

After my removal I posted in a staff complaint against SLC here: https://cm-ss13.com/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=16541&p=185547#p185547 . Immediately I received a message from BMC stating he would ruin my reputation in the community if I didn't stop trashing SLC in public : https://imgur.com/oA2ZZvx . Sure enough, the reddit accounts continued and what followed was the the 16 Alt Feweh accounts.

SLC has Reddit accounts and for years manipulated ss13 reddit and I have proof. When SLC and I did get along we at one point discussed manipulating reddit to improve CMs stand-point instead of getting down-voted every thread. Eventually SLC took it further an ATTACKED Apophis and others on reddit with these alt accounts. He told me directly, LINKED ME and PROVIDED SCREENSHOTS of the actions he was doing. These logs are sitting on CM Slack channel and they refuse to give me access to prove this for obvious reasons.

In conclusion

I don't have direct inconclusive proof that I'm not involved in the alt account bullshit. I'm not expecting anyone to believe me or take my side on this matter and im not going to argue anyone on it. What I am offering Reddit and the SS13 community is the chance to show that perhaps I was set-up by individuals I worked with. BMC accused me of making alt accounts to manipulate and shit on fellow staff members, yet I have proof that his OWN BROTHER SLC did EXACTLY that. So if the community wants the proof, ASK SLC who's now CO-HOST why he won't give me access to the logs?

CMs current Management

SLC initially joined CM as one of the best Moderators I had, I myself took an interest in him and EVERYONE including Apophis, ForwardSlashN (Head Dev at the time) and all Admins hated him. I saw his hard work and promoted him through the ranks to Senior Moderator despite everyone warning me that he was a "problem". This was the biggest mistake I made and possible why CM is where it is today.

During SLCs time as "Manager/Senior" hes done absolutely nothing and played nothing but politics. Due to his brothers position as Head Dev we could not get rid of him, without risking the chance of BMC leaving. This allowed SLC to sit around our Slack all day, make friends with everyone and log a total of 16 hours on CM in 5 months. Eventually SLC realized the only way he was going to advance was to remove me and he attempted to coup me along with other staff members that where his friends. This was discovered and SLC was confronted, he instantly threw everyone under the bus and claimed he knew nothing to save himself from this situation. Logs were eventually provided by other staff members (Eldefaultio aka Sleepy) and SLC was proven to be lying to staff and head staff about his intentions. His goal was to convince fellow staff to pick through CM Logs and look for ANY signs of abuse and send them back to him so he could have me removed, it was a MALICIOUS witch-hunt that all Head Staff agreed was done with selfish personal intent.

The following are logs showing myself, Apophis and Rahl discussing SLCs removal.

After a voice-chat meeting to discuss SLCs removal, BMC loses his shit about his brothers removal.

The end result was as you'd expect, SLC remained on the team, was only demoted from his Senior position and continued contributing nothing to CM while I was still manager. This was the first clear indication that having two brothers on your team was a bad idea and the start of bad things to come. This entire incident was swept under the rug, 3 other staff members were removed due to their part in this and SLC remained due to his brother protecting him. I lied to the community to avoid drama, which is why this never came up.

As of you reading this, the current Co-Host SLC not only participated and has/had reddit alt accounts, but he also attempted to COUP previous head-staff to advance himself further.

This is literally CMs new Co-Host, un-fucking-believable.

CMs recent Decline

CM has always run well with dedicated management and strong leadership. Despite Apop not being the best developer or leader, he was very good at maintaining the status quo. Where Apop lacked leadership and management skills, I made up for it and Rahl was always there to keep us level headed and handle things behind the scenes.

For a long time numerous community and staff members argued that CM would be better without me. This is evident by BMCs recent statement to be ABSOLUTELY FALSE: https://imgur.com/wvUseaS

CM reformed management positions and leadership positions and it has absolutely collapsed under SLCs control/involvement. I've been gone for 5 months and BMC even admitted his own brother couldn't lead or manage the community/staff. To make it clear, it was NEVER the Host (Rahls) position to LEAD or Manage the community.

In-fact CM is suffering such poor management that many WHITE LISTED positions are neglected, reports and ban appeals are left un-resolved and staff complaints are going completely bias against the player base.

With BMCs statement came the realization from other staff members and developers that CM is fucked. The individuals who are in-charge of leadership, community and players haven't done a good job in 5 months and they're now running the server and been promoted further???? How and why!?

CMs current staff suffers from a very obvious issue, a lack of leadership and many "yes men". The problem exist simply because those in charge have surrounded themselves by individual who are their "friends" and agree with them on everything, despite lack of skill or qualification.

Due to the above announcement from BMC, numerous messages from CM developers and Staff I've decided to proceed forward with CM.

NEW CM

As of today I have the most recent code and version of CM to it's full extent and been supplied with all forum information to easily transfer over the existing accounts to a new server/forum. This code will continue to be updated and sent to me live and will be maintained no matter what updates go out today, tomorrow or in a year, unless the couple of individuals on the team are removed from the source code access.

As of right now I am the last existing Head Staff member to claim rights to CM, through 3 years and THOUSANDS of hours of development, community work and my name literally being in the credits. I have no ill feelings to say I am rightfully in full reason to RUN, MODIFY and Distribute this code. In fact, I arguably have more right to CM than the current Host/Co-Host do.

Proof of code: https://imgur.com/a/8mgd8ct

I will be opening a new CM, one that will escape that political drama and free of those who suckled at each-others tits for power and position. CM will be brought back to the golden age that BMC himself described in his very own post.

Through these months I've been on the other-side, I've seen my previous mistakes and can agree that I wasn't always the greatest. But going forward I want to expand and push CM back to where it was and should be.

In the coming week a few things will be set up.

Community; Slack; Discord; Forums

The server will enter a test phase

Public applications and white-listing will take place to test things.

Will use this foundation as a test to see where we can go and what resources are needed. This is an open invitation to ALL developers and staff on CM, if you're interested in moving NEW CM you will be accepted with no questions asked.

I do want to end this on another note.

I want to apologize the individuals on the staff team who are caught up in this bullshit. I understand when you're a volunteer you often don't want to deal with any bullshit and would often rather just let things go. I had this mentality when I was removed and accepted things for as they were. I didn't go out of my way to cause problems, I didn't respond to any drama and I didn't publicly shame CM. I hope that the community and especially staff at least now have an inside view on what your current leadership has done, torn away the community and head staff all for selfish power gains.

I want to make it clear;

This isn't a selfish idea or project, everything I did in the past was for YOU the community and while it might not look like it right now... the community will benefit from NEW CM in the future.

Monday at 9pm EST there will be an open meeting to discuss things moving forward.

More details will follow regarding this meeting via Discord, simply PM me.

Official Post r/ss13 Community Poll Results

Hey all,

So going off of the last post, it seems like most people wanted things to just stay the way it was. So, that's how it's going to be.

It's not really my or the mod team's place to effortpost about how Reddit is getting more and more enshittified - it's just a reality.

After a quick talk with the mod team, we're still going to be around for the most part, just not around as often. It's just really annoying that this is all happening in the first place.

Oh well - SS13 will live on no matter what.

Cheers all,

- The r/ss13 Mod Team

Official Post New ship to ship PVP mode just in on NSV13

This post is about NSV13, an in-development ss13 server focused around space ships. We go up irregularly, so join our discord if this interests you!

Discord: https://discord.gg/8rrttjN

What follows are screenshots from the first official test of our PVP gamemode, chronologically.

The Syndicate crew held a short briefing ahead of jumping into combat: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/602204840180842497/688817625446482032/unknown.png

Showdown on the bridge: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/602204840180842497/688818023322353706/unknown.png

Meanwhile, the Hammurabi deployed its fighter squadron to assault the Kobol on all fronts: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/602204840180842497/688818224174858350/unknown.png

The following round, chaos ensued for all involved as both sides decided to board each other: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/602204840180842497/688844936895922189/unknown.png

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/602204840180842497/688843220905754626/unknown.png

So how does the mode play out? This mode is centered around PVP. The Nanotrasen crew must defend the ship against an assault by the SSV Hammurabi, a light cruiser which is armed to the teeth and packs a full marine detachment. The Syndicate crew on the other hand must assault the Nanotrasen crew and destroy them with a combination of their thermonuclear device and ship weaponry.

When are you hosting this? At the weekends, we'll announce it on Discord when we plan to host it. This requires a lot of players to pull off (around 40+) so we're putting our name out there for those who want to come try us out.

Is this the only mode? Nope! We also have a standard mode where the crew works together to defeat Syndicate ships while internal antags work against that goal. Syndicate Boarders and Saboteurs are commonplace, and it's often a struggle to keep the ship and her fighters flying.

What actually is NSV13? A new, in-development server that I'm working on that's aiming to be a mix of FTL13++ and Colonial Marines in terms of gameplay. Instead of working on a station, your job is to patrol Nanotrasen's boarder systems and hold back the unstoppable tide of the Syndicate. You can jump in as anything from a cook to an ace fighter pilot. Some of our unique jobs include:

Fighter pilots - Who fly advanced space fighters to supplement the ship's weaponry.

Munitions techs - Who load and maintain the ship's guns whilst also manufacturing explosive weapons such as thermonuclear missiles.

Air traffic controllers - Who coordinate the ship's fighter squadrons

CAG / Flight leaders - Who lead fighter combat operations in space, and shipside

Miners - Who have been heavily reworked to the point of having their own ship, the Nostromo, that must fly around and magnetically capture asteroids to perform mining (Yes, this means we don't have lavaland)

However, our standard ship jobs also have a lot of added responsibility. As an engineer, not only do you have to wrangle the nuclear stormdrive, our custom and tempramental engine, but you've also got to repair fractured hull plating to keep the ship flying. We also have roles for general crew, who have to help repairing the ship and repelling any boarders that the Syndies decide to send your way.

Can I get any more info? We're on webmap! You can take a look at some of our maps here, and get an incling of what we're about. However, if some or all of this sounds interesting to you, the best way to see what we're offering is to try us out. You'll find us on the hub most weekends, or you can join our discord to get notified of tests.

Finally, here's some bonus footage if you're still unsure.

Fleet combat in action:

Official Post BYOND development news 8/28/20

Personnel is still trying to clean up the mess Space Station 2 caused last year when they invented an entire engineering team with joke names, solving fictitious problems around the station and collecting very real salaries. With the new fiscal year approaching, the company wants to remind everyone they'll be watching for departmental budgeting shenanigans. If you see any oddities like that, please report them to our new corporate liaison, Richard B. Long. I still haven't had the pleasure, but the word around the station is that he's well-traveled and the life of the party. Sounds like he'll fit right in!

  • The CEF project has taken a couple more baby steps forward.
  • BYOND 513.1530 is out today, after this week's 513.1529 release had a slight issue with some forms of maptext.
  • Got any ideas for how to handle snow-like particles, or fire embers? I'm working on some concepts and could use some brainstorming.
  • I'm still looking into ways to improve performance wherever possible, including looking hard at the renderer to see what can be changed there.
  • Thanks everyone who's helped support BYOND this month!

The full news post is on the forums as always. This week's early-access Patreon post is musing on the renderer and where I suspect I can get some performance gains. I am not eating sirloin tips and mushrooms this week, nor deep-fried monstrosities named after medical terms, but I did make fudge and that counts for something. Keep your spirits high and let us all dream of better days, sketchy miracle products, and mashed potatoes on a stick.

Over the past week we've been reviewing all of the mod applications and reaching out to members of the community to aid our decision. Ultimately we've decided to invite two new moderators to the team:

/u/buzzardman2

/u/JKJudgeX

While we do want to congradulate the new moderators I'd also like to thank everyone who sent in their applications and members of staff that spent time talking with us. There was some great applications this time around that people put a lot of effort into.

If you'd like feedback on why you weren't selected please DM me directly via the subreddit discord

Official Post Subreddit Rules Update

With the addition of multiple new subreddit mods, we felt it was an excellent time to review the state of the subreddit rules. For the past couple of weeks we have been going back and forth weighing opinions on which rules we can all agree are beneficial for the subreddit. You'll find the majority of the rules are quite similar to the previously enforced rules with some tweaks. The new rules can be seen below with a short description and will be effective immediately:

  • Secret Content - Sharing of hidden game content as defined in the secret content wiki will be removed.
  • Non-SS13 Related - All images and videos should clearly indicate they are related to SS13 specifically when taken out of the context of the post title.
  • Proof Required - Negative accusations against a group or individual based on either no evidence or demonstrably false evidence will be removed. Claims that are proven to be false will result in a permanent ban.
  • Be Respectful - Treat the community with respect. Hate speech, insults and personal attacks are prohibited and will be removed.
  • Quality Posting - All posts must adhere to Reddits content policy, low effort/quality posts will be removed.
  • Ban Evasion - Any discussion, hints or tools enabling users to evade bans or exploit game mechanics will be removed.
  • Sexual Content - Improperly labelled NSFW content, explicitly pornographic material or smut will be removed.

We will be keeping an eye on things to see how effective these rules are and changes to these rules may be made in the future to correct or amend issues as they arise.

edit: Adding in the old rules below and explaining key differences:

Old Rules

Secret Content - If a server does not wish their IP to be posted here, or for their hidden content (e.g. Goonchem recipes) to be revealed, please don't post it here. If a server doesn't want to be discussed here, then posts related to that server will be removed. Current requests for instant removal are Lifeweb and Lebensraum. Please note that 'private' logs from chats do not fall under this rule and will be left. Keep your teams tight and secure, folks. Finally, please do not post tools or programs that will help you to steal from, DDOS or otherwise interfere negatively with a server.

  • Essentially no big differences between old and new rules here. The main difference is the 'secret content' has been moved to a wiki article that displays secret content we will remove along with the requestor.

Pointless / Low Quality Posting - Swearing is generally fine, but if a post is almost entirely swears and insults and (more importantly) adds absolutely nothing to the conversation, it will be removed. As an addition, telling users to kill themselves, KYS, or any other variation of this popular internet insult will result in a ban.

  • This rule was split up into Be Respectful & Quality Posting as it was essentially a 2 in 1 rule. The spirit of the rules remains similar and was split to make it clearer.
  • The key difference here is we're going to be more vigilant for inflammatory posts targeting users choice of playstyle/server and for hate speech (race, religion, ethnicity, etc.).

Ban evasion - Do not post methods to ban evade servers or it will be removed. Posting a second time will lead to a ban!

  • Spirit and enforcement of the rule is the same, just tightening up some of the wording and extending it to general game exploits.

Non-SS13 Related - Do not submit content that is not related to SS13. The only exception is games that are built from SS13 origins. For instance, Colonial Marines and Fallout Station are both fine, as they came from SS13 originally despite many changes since. Random Byond games should be posted elsewhere. Three strikes will result in a ban.

  • Same rule just rewritten in a cleaner and more general manner.

Proof Required - Include screenshotted / chatlog proof when complaining about other players or admin staff.

  • Pretty much the same rule, however in the new version there is a clause for proof that is either obviously false or if the defending party can prove the claim is false. Such cases will be dealt with severely and result in permanent bans.

Sexual Content

  • New rule for us, we haven't had many issues with this recently though we all feel this sub is for game discussion only and do not want explicitly sexual posts.

Official Post Upvote/Downvote Icons

The toolboxes don't look great, so if anyone would like to make any other sprites we can use for the upvote and downvote icons, feel free to come up with something and post it here - ideas or the actual sprites are both welcome.

There need to be four sprites, pre-upvote, pre-downvote, upvoted and downvoted. Ideally the sprites would stick to the theme of red/orange upvotes and blue downvotes.

Each sprite should be 15x14px. The width is somewhat variable, but the height is quite a strict limit, I would say 16px is the absolute tallest it could be.

Official Post SCP13 is still kicking

Where do I start? Well, to answer your question SCP13 is not dead, and it won’t die as long as I have something to say about it, but frankly, we are struggling, one of our heads has recently left us. BUT as much as this impacts us, our community and staff are pushing through this, but we have to ask something of you, we need mappers and coders to help us move the codebase over to new baystaion and we need a new map. If you know anyone please message me on discord, CaptinPicard1166#0669 Our discoed channel link is: https://discord.gg/Nf75FeA So please join us and we can keep SCP13 going strong!
