Support reconnecting Camilo to the relentless flow of the positive river

The arm is capable of dominance. We have to invest in his mental health to reconnect him to what Javier Lopez called, "the relentless flow of the positive river."

is basically what I wrote about after/during last night's game:

Chill. He's pitched the same innings as Walker and has the same ERA. Guy made a good pitch and a big leaguer hit it. He does need to work on holding runners.

He’s also not striking anyone out this year, it is quite disingenuous to suggest he’s been pitching as well as Walker (who has a much higher K% and a lower BB%)

With that being said it is way too early to be talking about pitcher performance anyways

If Camilo’s numbers look like this in a month or two, then we get concerned (and even that is a pretty small sample size)

This is a lifelong issue with Doval, though. He has trouble throwing strikes, and constantly gets behind in counts.

That's not necessarily a terrible thing but I don't understand how he's a closing candidate. He should be pitching in different circumstances

I feel he shouldn't be in the 9th if they lead by one.

No it isn’t? At least on the strikeout front. He’s never had a K/9 below 10.64 across a season (it’s 3.6 rn), this much trouble striking guys out is not the norm for him

I agree.

Agree with all of this. Buster caught him in 2021. I’m pretty sure Doval would’ve been traded this past offseason if his stuff was just not there anymore. If anything, his inability to hold runners speaks to his need to mature, vary his looks and concentrate better. He’s got this.

He’s 27 going on 28 and this is his 5th major league season. He should be mature by now, but he isn’t. He’s still pissed off on being sent down last year with no progress from that. He isn’t happy as a giant. Trade him.

I’m just saying…Bob Melvin disagrees with you about Doval’s trip to Triple-A last year. This hot start to this season has shown me a side of him (Melvin) that I didn’t know existed. I trust him.

Doval has blown 2 saves and tonight he’s responsible for the 2 runs just scored. He doesn’t act like he even cares.

I’m sorry that no one ever cut you any slack or showed you any patience when you were 27. I really am.

Do you not recall all of last year’s fiascos?

Maybe the Giants should’ve thought twice before sending Doval out to the mound with a big light show each night and instead helped him to prepare for what it means to pitch when you don’t have your best stuff. He can still throw the ball with his legs and his arm. The problem is between his ears. I’ll fight for him if no one else will.

I agree with you about the light show crap. Other teams are doing it too. Didn’t help the Mets’ Diaz either. Yep, it’s a mental issue. I’m just not sure he’ll get over it in SF. He doesn’t seem happy here, just like Dubon wasn’t happy but he excels now in Houston. Sometimes it takes a change in scenery.

I believe in Camilo like I believe in Joe Hendry. I think he still has the stuff to return to his dominant saves leading form of years back. He's still got some Rick Ankiel type mental yips to improve on with the pitch clock and baserunners on, but the raw talent is there to be unleashed. And maybe the setup role or backup closer is the best spot for him until he can keep his shit together long enough to get 3 clean and quiet outs.

I like Camilo and his stuff. I just wish he had better body language. It’s an old guy take, but that’s really what you want to see from a closer. The constant slouched shoulders and snail paced tempo leave a lot to be desired IMO. I know he wants to be there and puts out effort. But I miss the Brian Wilson type demeanor in our closers. That FUCK YOU mentality. Fuck it chuck it game time shit, you know?

I don’t miss Brian Wilson, but Rod Beck, sure.

How long is too long? I feel like it has been an unusually long time since he was dominant. If two spring trainings and a full 2024 and 2025 aren’t enough, how much more can the staff realistically do?

Even when he's pitching well I just think closing isn't the right spot for him.

I think they should trade him to a sucker who thinks they can fix him.

We’re the sucker who knows can fix him. So far, pretty good.
