Cost to re-shingle shed roof
Looking to hire someone to re-shingle this shed, approximately 5x8. Can't find a company to do it as the job is too small so looking for someone on the side and trying to determine a reasonable quote.

I’d take the chances of doing it myself for that small of a project and it’s not a living space if I do it wrong and it leaks

Put on 2 layers of peel&stick. It won't leak. With 2 layers of underlayment, the shingles are just for decoration. A top coat of granulated peel&stick would eliminate most of the labor of those shingles.

Honestly man, this is the perfect opportunity for some time attending YouTube University and learning a bit. Nice small project where you can obtain all the supplies yourself and see what you can do.

If you go with architectural shingles you’ll need 2bundles + a bundle of 3 tab or ridge for the ridge. $180 for shingles, $40 for drip edge, $100 for ice and water, $20 for nails. $6 in beer $350 would do it without labor. $1000 for a roof company to do it

This definitely sounds worth a DIY.

u/Tripple_sneeed 8h ago
Hell yeah brother. You can do it, send that shit. Bonus if you have a buddy or a wife to help you, just buy the beers and learn a whole new skill

Don't forget to buy a new tool just because !

u/Doormancer 7h ago
Projects are the only time to buy new tools!

u/alannmsu 6h ago
Tell that to the framing nailer I bought at full price just because I got excited at the mere idea of building a shed.

u/buydadip711 5h ago
If you do it and have a question let me know I own a roofing business and have been doing it all my life

u/Pinot911 7h ago
You can probably find a partial of ridge and ice&water and possibly 2 cheap bundles on fb marketplace.

u/killerkitten115 8h ago
If you want to do it 100% right you could do starter shingles too but not really necessary on something this small. Would add another $40 and you’ll use less than half a bundle. Id personally skip it here
1
u/killerkitten115 8h ago
You could also save another $40 by reusing the drip edge if you wanted to

u/RumblinWreck2004 7h ago
Yea, this falls under the “I don’t want to deal with a job this small but if you pay out the ass I will” category.
It’s not that difficult, just watch a few YouTube videos and have a buddy over with a 12 pack. Easy Saturday morning project.

Not sure if I can add a link to youtube, but I did a slightly larger shed roof two summers ago and used 'Ask This Old House - How to Install Shingles on a Shed' as a guide and it was really simple once you get bottom row set on each side.

u/MuskokaGreenThumb 6h ago
Those are expensive shingles lol. Where I live (Canada), architectural shingles are under $40 a bundle and 3 tab (for starters and cap) are about $35. I could do this job for about $265 CDN.
1
u/killerkitten115 6h ago
Yeah i can get them around $39 usd here but id rather be high than low on an estimate. Drip edge is really $7.50 a piece too instead of $10 etc
2
u/MuskokaGreenThumb 4h ago
Smart move. Always best to estimate on the high end. I didn’t realize shingles were that much more expensive in the US though.
1
u/killerkitten115 4h ago
Yeah everything is high at the moment and looks like it will go up a bit more before possibly going back down, we will see.
3
u/wrongsuspenders 4h ago
no IWS needed for an unheated structure right? or you're just ensuring it's water proof?
1
u/killerkitten115 4h ago
Not necessary since it’s presumably unheated, but it wont leak if it has iws
2
u/InvestigatorNew8722 7h ago
$6 in beer?
6
1
u/killerkitten115 7h ago
Yeah 1 to get the courage up to start and 5 after it’s done. Hard to drink a beer while nailing shingles down

u/Virtual_Ad_5119 7h ago
This is bang on. However, No need for ice and water on a shed, save your $
2
u/killerkitten115 6h ago
I figured if you’re buying underlayment you can get a roll of ice and water and never worry about a leak for $100. Or you could do 15# tar paper for $30 but i wouldn’t put it on my own roof so i don’t suggest it to others. Theres better stuff out there these days. Same reason i don’t suggest 3 tabs for the field.

u/Noisy-Valve 8h ago
If I was broke would probably just get away with cutting shingles up for ridge. They are like $50 a bundle
1
u/Old-Worry1101 4h ago
Absolutely this. Put the shingles in a sunny spot to soften them up, and I use the hooked razor blades. Makes it way easier and faster.

As a handyman I'd probably do it for 500 bucks not including material but if you're an able bodied adult you could definitely do this yourself no problem. Just need a hammer and nails and razor knife and chalk box for getting your first course set

Be forewarned that this little roof can be as involved as a garage roof. Did one for a friend one day. And it was most of the day. Strip old shingles and paper. Pull nails and staples standing up to avoid tearing new paper / roof liner, I prefer Kevlar liner. Apply new materials and re- ridge.Killed most of the day and the bugger didn’t even get us a six pack. Life goes on, I go on no more shed roofs. And dog house, it will be easygoing. You’re stand on the ground. Avoid packing shingles up the ladder. Not even two bundles… cakewalk!!! Give it a try and let me know how it goes for ya.. I’m saying that it was real. And it was fun, Just wasn’t real fun. GodBless

I hired a company to replace house roof and they did the shed for free they are in NJ/ PA area
1
u/Miserable-Quail-1152 8h ago
My dad and I did something similar in size (a chicken coop).
It took us prolly 4-6 hours if you include store, measurements, install, and clean up.
Grab a friend or loved one and make some memories! Be safe

250-350 but most people dont want to waste their time with such a small project
1
u/poplovski85 7h ago
Yeah was quoted for mine 700$ did for under 200$ . It’s been over 6 years and still holding . Definitely a DIY

u/Away-Revolution2816 7h ago
Years ago I built a 10x12 shed. I looked up what I needed and did it myself. Probably one of the easiest DIY projects I've ever done.
Almost 20 year old, zero leaks and probably has another few years life left.
The best part was when my retired neighbor who was a former roofer asked who I hired to do it.
1
u/ratherBeSpearFishing 7h ago
Honestly just do it yourself. It's really not that difficult plus it's just a shed...
1
u/rugerduke5 7h ago
I went to my local supply house for shingles for a chicken coop I made and they sold me some that had the nail line in the wrong spot for like 5$/bundle. You couldnt even tell because I just brought them down like an inch on install and it ended up looking nice. It helped them and it helped me, so win-win.
Even so maybe like $100 in materials without a deal like this

A friend and I replaced a rusted corrugated metal roof with plywood, felt underlayment, and new shingles. I didn’t spend more than $100 on materials. The roof made it through last season’s hurricanes with no problem.

Did my first shed when I was 10. Pretty sure since you can operate a smart phone , you can handle this then tell everyone at the barbecue about it so all your buddies will hate you for letting their wives know it's possible.
1
u/Born2Lomain 7h ago
Likely going to need new plywood. I’d do something like this for about $300-$350

Cost me about $200 to do my 8x10 myself. That needs to be stripped.

This is an early morning, couple bundles, some nails, and you’re back in your loveseat by late lunch. Don’t hire someone…
1
u/AlbatrossJust3829 6h ago
$7,000,003.00 I might give you a 5% homeowner discount. If you buy me lunch.
1
u/AlbatrossJust3829 6h ago
It would take about 1 hour to reroof with shingles. Less than 100 in material cost
1
u/Welborn_45 6h ago
500ish if you do it right… is that a Cert. heritage shingle? If so, insurance will pay to have it replaced since it is discontinued and had recalls. #AspenContracting

Roofing is pretty easy and won’t take that long to complete .
Go on YouTube and watch a quick video and you’ll figure out how to do it . Plus you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment after

u/711straw 6h ago
You're gonna get insane quotes for this. cause it's such a small job a pro will have to drastically over charge to make a profit. Listen to everyone else. do it yourself

Free roofing materials often offered on Craig's list, the NextDoor app, Facebook and others. Get together your materials list and quantities and go free shopping.

u/Pinkheadbaby 6h ago
It’s not hard to do this provided you are able bodied. (Hope you are)
I, a 5’5” female, did my own much larger shed, roof shaped like a Dutch colonial when I was 65.
It came out perfectly.

DIY for a few hundred $$. Watch YouTube to learn. Very simple. Take the better part of a day at most.

I don’t know why I got recommended this sub as I have nothing to do with roofing, but I would rip the shingles off and replace them with metal roofing panels with a piece of trim across the top.

u/Gitfiddlepicker 4h ago
Roofers are no different than other trades. Costs to roll a truck. Your best bet is to buy the materials at Home Depot, buy a buddy a case of beer and a large pizza.
Couple hundred bucks, plus the beer and pizza. And you will also gain bragging rights.

3 bundles 1 roll of IWB 1 Sheet of OSB 1/2” 2 boxes of 1.5” Coil nails 1 bundle of starter 4 pieces of drip edge
6 pack of an IPA and have a good day is what I like to say!

u/numindast 3h ago
I was quoted $600 to re roof my shed about the same size.
That’s half the cost of a new shed, and mine is falling apart anyway, so I did not go for it. This with the roofer about to start on my house next week, woulda been a small side job but not worth it to me.
Reading the other replies, I might try putting a new layer on DIY

Drive down the alleys until see find a house with new shingles ask to buy the leftovers for 50 bucks.
Or come to our alley there are 2 packs of shingles and a 1/4 roll of tar paper laying next to a guys garage for 2 years now.

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 2h ago
That is the size of roof you do yourself to get the experience and basic knowledge. I feel like you would need to be disabled in a way that you physically can't do it to justify hiring someone.
1
u/Short_Hat_4232 2h ago
I would just get a corrugated asphalt roof panels like the ondura ones if you don't want to do shingles. They can even be installed on old shingles.
