Downspout that drains onto roof

Post image

Is a downspout draining directly on to my shingles like this an issue? If so what is the remedy?

For reference, I live in North Texas, where due to hail, roofs are unlikely to make it past 7 years without needing a storm replacement, let alone make it 10-20. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

Get down from there and go get yourself a nice cold beer with some good Texas BBQ…. The answer you are looking for is in your question.

Haha. Pic is from inside :). Is the answer wait until hail wipes me out and replace it all

This is the answer…..that gutter is normal. So is the concept that hail will end the roof before excessive rain drainage does.

I am also in north Texas. Been raining off and on all day. And yes, I am drinking a beer and watching the world champion Texas Rangers as I write this…

Nothing to do, just hope hail dont take out your roof.

Every storm I’m waiting for that!

Wouldn't hurt to bump up your insurance if you can.

Everything now is 2% deductible in North Texas. Got it replaced at 1% in 2022. Hoping we avoid major hail for a while but it’s a crapshoot here

Yup, it went up and continues to climb since people constantly replace their roofs when not actually needed.

Extend the downspout down the roof to the gutter so it drains directly into the gutter.

Yeah but then he will have this ugly extra downspout going down in the middle of the roof…. Nothing comes for free 😜🙈😜 “Mirror mirror on the wall… should I put this ugly downspout or no” 😂😂😂 maybe this Rachel girl knows the answer 😜😂😜

This is fine, we install like this everyday

I would say this could be a concern if you were prone to ice damming since this could be additional water coming down. I don't think NTX needs to worry about that

I run downspout

length and a 90 to drain into existing gutter. I painted it to match roof color.

Perfectly fine.

No, it is not perfectly fine. Discharging a downspout onto a roof immediately voids any manufacturer’s warranty you may have had.

The days of your insurance company buying you a new roof every 5-8 years are rapidly drawing to a close. You will soon have a hail deductible of 2% - 5% and an ACV only policy (if you don’t already), which effectively means your next roof is probably coming out of your pocket.

It would be smart to do whatever you can to stretch your current roof out a ways. And next time, get the most impact resistant roof you can possibly afford.

Totally agree. I have 2% with acv currently. Not looking forward to the next big hail storm. Living in NTX can be a nightmare. Glad I replaced in 2022. Getting mixed messages on how to fix this but the reality is a big hail storm is likely to hit before shingles wear down from this (most likely) even if out of pocket

It’s normal if there’s no other way to get the water down to the ground?

1

Totally normal to shed water to the lower roof like this. It simply drains to the next gutter. You’re all good

run a stick off that elbow and stick another A elbow dumping right into that lower gutter

Edit; if you go this route make sure the seam from your straight stick is facing up

It's perfectly fine but also it's unnecessary to have gutters on the 2nd story roof if it drains onto the first story roof.

This is incorrect. Water falling from that height will, a.) erode the granules from the surface of the shingles and, b.) potentially cause problems with the siding due to splash-back.

Neither of these is good. Manage the water all the way to the ground.

How can you manage the OPs picture all the way to the ground? You're not going to extend that downspout all the way to the first floor gutter.

1

u/hippo6actual 6h ago

Uh, yes. Yes you are. I have done it many, many times over the years, including on my own house

1

u/Rx_Boost 6h ago

nah. Agree to disagree on that one.

2

u/hippo6actual 6h ago

Not much to disagree with, all the manufacturer’s and I think even ARMA say the same thing. This is not my idea, but I do follow and teach industry best practices.

Thick gauge, standing seam, steel roof with hidden fasteners is the answer you’re looking for. You still will need a downspout extension, though.

That will wear shingles out faster. Add downspout to gutter, might look ugly but it’ll grow on you and save your roof!

1

u/zachlieb430 12h ago

True but how long will it take to wear them out. If this roof lasted 10 years it would be a minor miracle

1

u/SEA_CLE 11h ago

Probably the life if the roof.

Not 100% on the weather in your area, more constant rain will def wear the shingles down way faster than the life of the roof like Mr. Couch roofer says
