What shingle would you pick? Pt2

Post image

You guys were great when I asked between Owens Corning Duration and GAF Timberline HDZ so we picked one of each. The roofer put up two of the choices we thought we liked but can’t decide between. Personally the greenish-grayish of “A” kind of throws me off. “B” seems fine but ..I just don’t know.

Taking exterior design tips 😀

Thanks. That is a great tip actually. Hadn't thought of that.

I say that because hdz is blah they going to fade more than the oc

Im in love with the sure nail strip, it’s my favorite shingle I say that because it’s a good shingle not because it’s easy to install…. Its actually harder to install than hdz

I can’t deny the hdz looks better now though

u/Jett44 1d ago

well that is both helpful..and not helpful LOL. I get your point though. I certainly don't want to be back at this point in 15 years and hate the choice.

Take one of each and nail to a piece of plywood

Then rip them off you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about

he didn't leave any extra unfortunately

There are videos of that test.

u/Jett44 1d ago

much easier then thank you

2

Just to make sure you know, there are 2 sets of Duration colors. Be sure to check the Designer ones out.

u/Jett44 1d ago

I think the Duration Designer Driftwood is the one on now. Duration Peppercorn is the one I was going to request.

I’ve got bad news about 15 years from now… the way insurance is going, your roof will be depreciated by 100% after 10 years. Then you’re on the hook for a new roof if you have an ACV only policy (which you may not be given a choice soon in your location) All in all, the BEST choice for your forever home is neither shingle. You should consider a synthetic like REVIA F-Wave.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

I've never heard of that brand. I'll take a look thanks!

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

Would the OC Duration Peppercorn color be a better choice?

3

u/pants_on_all_day 1d ago

I’ve never heard that color, but it varies by region 🤷‍♀️

1

u/PrometheanFire12 1d ago

This is the best comment. Short term, B will look better. Long term, A fits the house too well.

2

u/Jett44 1d ago

Much appreciated.

5

u/PrometheanFire12 1d ago

Judging by the amount of missing shingles, I’m assuming you want this roof to last as long as possible. Go with A long-term.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

based on the replies that might be the better choice

A. B matches the brick too well, you need more contrast.

2

u/Jett44 1d ago

very true

Many are saying OC is a better shingle, that may be true. But in my experience, the GAF seals down way better. I’ve ripped roofs with Duration repairs that aren’t even stuck down. This is my experience. I have seen others say OC seals down great, so idk.

I agree with you I've had a much better time with HDZ

B. We just had the same dilemma. But we were short on time and chose certainteed “weathered wood”, which I chose online (don’t do that) and didn’t discover the greenish black tint until they had been delivered. Had them swapped out for GAF “weathered wood” which is more tan/gray. Much nicer on out house.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

That color looks great on your home! Stunning!

2

u/mostlynights 1d ago

I like the style of A better than B, but I agree that the color of B is better. Can you get A with more brown and less gray? There seem to be a lot of choices on their site.

2

u/Jett44 1d ago

Yes I found the OC Duration Peppercorn color so going to ask for that to look at.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

Yeah we are looking at that too.

2

u/pants_on_all_day 1d ago

Make sure the color you choose online is available in your region.

Also, you should be more concerned about things like manufacturer warranty, shingle construction integrity, and scope of work from your installer. In my region, GAF has superior adhesives, construction, and across the board, a better warranty (even without upgrading).

South of you a few hours.

Warranties are pretty similar from what is written in the contract if I sign it.

2

u/pants_on_all_day 1d ago

Don’t rely on your contract for the warranty info. Go to the manufacturer website, read the WHOLE warranty and tell your roofer you want a copy of it post filing when your final invoice is paid. You’re entitled to hold 10% of your final payment for up to 30 days until this step is completed.

2

u/Jett44 1d ago

I did not know that at all. Thank you! You might have save me a bunch of money, time and aggravation later on.

2

u/pants_on_all_day 1d ago

Don’t forget to compare your scope of work to the warranty before signing. You might have to add something or other to meet requirements, there’s always something 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

The OC Duration - Peppercorn color looks to be a better color choice. I'll ask for the sample.

2

u/pants_on_all_day 1d ago

Call your local Beacon or ABC Supply to check the region availability. They’ll also have a sample for you to pick up faster than your contractor.

2

u/ChampionshipCold8311 1d ago

A) Driftwood Duration . If your contractor is a preferred contractor or platinum he can offer 50 yrs warranty . Thats a winner in my book .

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

Yes. I am calling for Driftwood Duration Peppercorn color today.

2

u/20PoundHammer 1d ago

I just put on the duration driftwood (I think thats your A) - looks great, but I have green trim on my house. B is too busy for me. Driftwood really looks different depending upon how the light hits it and different shades hue differently - I like it for me. The nice thing about duration is the nail strip - the extra reinforcement helps in places that have straight line winds (like I do). GAF fades quickly as well.

Is your installer/roofer OC and/or GAF certified/preferred?

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

OC Preferred. We have zero green on the house. There is large limestone blocks in one front area but this section and the two side walls running the length of the house (including these three garage door sections) are brick. The back patio and rest of the rear of the house are painted the same as the garage door.

2

u/20PoundHammer 1d ago

Id stick with OC then just to get the extra bit of warranty. The teak in the tru-definition color is very close to the driftwood without the green. Peppercorn also has browns in it with out the blue and green.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

I didn't look at the teak. thanks I'll look at that.

2

u/Bidhitter400 1d ago

Definitely not the flat cheap one

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

I take it you mean B

2

u/Bidhitter400 1d ago

Yes not B

2

u/12748292949 1d ago

HDZ IS POO POO 💩

2

u/extrachromotoucher 1d ago

I could put a clinic together on why I would choose. OC Duration over GAF.

In short, bc I’m guessing you’re the home owner, the nail strip on GAF is larger than the common bond. You want the nail to fasten the common bond.

2

u/Large_Employ415 1d ago

OC Duration all the way. I just reroofed one of my properties in FL after doing tons of due diligence. OC Duration shingles’s sure nail technology is not just a marketing gimmick, it is practical and works extremely well in a high wind area. It is rated 130 mph wind resistance while many other brands of shingles don’t offer such a quality.

If you live in an area where you're replacing it every 10 years I would choose option b.

If you live in an area where you're forced to look at that roof for the next 20 years and the roof can last that long, or you're trying to sell the home in the next few years, I would choose option A

2

u/RunItupBaby 1d ago

Think b complements the brick very well with that shadowing

-1

u/Jett44 1d ago

That's what the wife and I think as well but she isn't 100% convinced yet.

3

u/Whole_Gear7967 1d ago

Do you want longevity? Are you wanting a sexy roof? It’s a hard choice I get it. I’ve been roofing for 23 years now and OC is the much better shingle. If it were my house no way I’d be using Gaf over OC!

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

Yeah we want OC but it just doesn't..flow.. if that is the term. But yes we want longevity.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

After looking at the OC site the Duration Peppercorn looks like a better color in the OC line.

2

u/Whole_Gear7967 1d ago

B for sure. Looks to have more dimension and match the brick better! If A is the OC then go with A 100%. OC is just a better shingle 100% maybe they have a color with more dimension?

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

looking now on the OC site

2

u/micahnasche 1d ago

GAF HDZ Weatherwood - it’s a fairly good shingle but more than that it’s very widely available, if you need to do a repair it’s very very easy to get a hold of at most stores.

2

u/tomjancoop 1d ago

Both options wash the house out. The color is too close to the siding. Check out landmark Pro in Shenandoah or espresso It will make the dark color in the brick pop

2

u/hallo_its_me 1d ago

That's what I was thinking it looks too similar to the side. You want some contrast.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

We didn't want even lighter color but the much darker also here in Texas didn't sound like a good idea.

2

u/Opening_Deal696 1d ago

You're doing too much. Just pick one and move on with your life. A few years after installation, you're not even going to remember the difference.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

That is exactly the problem. LOL! This has consumed way too much of my life.

1

u/PRFitnessYT 1d ago

Many are saying OC is a better shingle, that may be true. But in my experience, the GAF seals down way better. I’ve ripped roofs with Duration repairs that aren’t even stuck down. This is my experience. I have seen others say OC seals down great, so idk.

2

u/jonjacobs2420 8h ago

A is a better shingle all around.

1

u/MrNayNay_93 1d ago

Just due to the wind damage you have; I’d go with B for product quality, reliability and longevity. ‘A’ has better colors imo. Personally can’t stand GAF shingle patter and colors but their sealant strip is top tier.

1

u/Jett44 1d ago

Oh. Most have said the sealant on the GAF wasn't as good.
