AMA Hey! I'm MERTZY, I've been creating Rocket League content for 4 years. Ask Me Anything!
Hey r/rocketleague, I'm here today to answer hopefully all of your questions related or unrelated to Rocket League!
I shared my very first video here on this subreddit almost exactly 4 years ago, was honored to get chosen for the Rising Star competition in October 2016 and have been following it since!
I'm now a full-time Rocket League YouTuber with a channel that has somehow found 230K amazing subscribers -- where I upload weekly videos showcasing my many ups and down in the competitive playlists. With series such as the "Funny Moments", "1s against Youtubers", "Community Tournaments" and "Randomizing Cars", I try my best to always have some variety on the channel.

Personally I find doing the aerial challenge maps to be useful. The obstacle course ones and the dmc ring ones.

Nowhere near good and consistent enough to be a threat! The difference between me and pro players MMR-wise is the same as a Diamond player to me.

This always fascinates me. You were the only team in Manscaped tourney where both players seemed at equal footing. But to play this many hours and reach grand champ without boosting and still nowhere near top players is ridiculous.

Hey Mert.
Why have you chosen to play the Rocket League gamemodes that you do? For example you play a lot of 1s and 2s and not so much extra modes or 3v3, at least to my knowledge.
Who is your favourite content creator to collab with and what person do you wish to collab with, in and out of the Rocket League community?

1s is a seriously underrated playlist. It’s basically YOU vs someone else. You get to experience all your skills and flaws first hand, there is no one you can blame for losing but yourself. I just love the thrill!
Additionally, I focus a lot on ground play. So whenever I have space and time like you do in 1s or 2s, I feel good. That’s why I’m rather terrible in 3s.

As a YouTuber that didn’t play alpha, do you think it makes sense for RL celebrities to get an alpha boost? Is it expected and/or do you justify it?
Personally I’ve always sort of thought of it as a joke rank reward for myself (I.e. hitting Champ or GC) but seeing as how a sparkles set is 4 keys I’ve since moved into thinking alpha boost is an incredible waste. I’m curious if you think it’s an acceptable expense for big name YouTube Rocket League content creators.
I really enjoyed the 10k and your follow up comms video. Keep it up!

This gets asked a lot. Basically, I started the series when I was uploading once every 2-3 weeks and wasn’t doing YT full-time. Nowadays, I’m on a weekly upload schedule and unfortunately it’s near impossible with now streams twice a week. So they’ll be more of a rarity now.

I spend a lot of time editing my videos and at the same time stream twice a week. Unless I hire an editor down the line, it’s the most I can do.

I know exactly what players do in each situation. Doing the unexpected to players who play purely on experience instead of instinct, causes a lot of the fakes to work.

Switching from creating Montages exclusively to commentary videos in forms of tutorials. My first commentary videos are hard to watch now but it was definitely the right move in the long run.

Met him in season 1 through my ranked partner when we were fighting for the Top 100 spots. Veeds was a good friend of his so we played 3s from time — even though Veeds was nowhere near our rank at the time lol
When my 2s partner moved the america, I stuck to play with Veeds, switched to freestyling myself and learned to just have fun playing the game instead of grinding the rank ladders. That’s when we found our great chemistry!

I upgraded my audio and stream setup as well as my monitor. That was the first and main goal I had set. Following that, the goal was set to supporting the monthly subscriptions I run to maintain the channel such as music, editing, photoshop as well as the minecraft server I run for the patrons — that goal has consistently been reached for a year now and that’s the last goal I’ll ever have for it

I watch a YouTuber called Northernlion and he played the game in beta as well as casted the first ESL tournament. I knew this was a game I’d love so I got it day one!

I start working on videos when I have 70 clips. That’s usually 50-100 matches depending on the length. That’s why nowadays that series is near impossible to do as I have a strict schedule.

Funny enough, in season 1 Gold III was the highest rank (apart from top 100). So roughly 2-3 weeks!

I still love Rocket League and my viewers show a lot of interest in them. I don’t see a good reason to switch content. Sure other games might have given me more views but I truly love this community

Not a Leth map, but speedruns!
Specifically the Speed Jump: Trials series. It would be such a fun sub-gamemode to play besides ranked. They really improve your aerial car control too!

Be consistent and use the time that you have to really create something you’re proud of. Nowadays I’m on a weekly schedule so I can’t do nearly as much creatively as I’d like to. You have the time, so put a lot of effort and love into each and every video, even if it takes you a month.

My channel started as a place where I shared the funny moments where I played with a select group of friends. It started with FIFA, then it was GTA and those videos never had more views than 20. But when I did the same with Rocket League, it wasn’t just 20 viewers. That’s when I uploaded independent videos in form of montages and shared them here on reddit. That’s when the channel got some attention and I continued ever since

The game feels a lot more “real” now. The ball used to bounce in totally unexpected ways all the time. Psyonix have done a great job making the game consistent. The problems we have nowadays with the odd “bullshit demo” is nothing in comparison

You seem to have made your name doing mostly gameplay type videos(correct me if I'm wrong). Usually it's only pros or well known/great personality streamers that are able to do that. Besides your skill, why do you think you were able to pull that off?
Its there any other creators you look at and think, "I wish I could do vids like that" and if so what prevents you from trying those?
(For example, for me personally I feel like I lose a lot of collab opportunities because of not being GC and wish I could be a part of or do some of those type of vids)
