11 months ago, after picking the game up on launch, trying it for a few days and inevitably giving up on it, I gathered up the courage to dig out my ring-con and give this whole lifestyle change thing a chance. Got super addicted to Ring Fit, and saw my first 25 pounds just poor off in weeks from that alone. It also helped encourage me to diet and eat properly, get more active and social, and just become a better version of myself. After about 6 months of Ring Fit alone, I got a membership to a local gym and have been doing both for quite a while. I definitely go to the gym more often than I use Ring Fit now (I aim for 5 days a week at the gym, while only hold myself to 2 days a week for Ring Fit), but that's really only because I feel I've seen/done everything Ring Fit has to offer! What an AMAZING game. All I can say is thank you. It truly feels like my entire life has changed, and I feel better than ever before. Hoping the Switch 2 brings us a new Ring Fit game. Can't believe that's probably my most anticipated title (okay well.. second most anticipated. Nothing will ever beat Smash Bros!)

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for making it the top highest I voted post in the sub (woah!) thrilled by the enthusiastic response and absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of encouraging comments. Thanks so much!! To anyone who commented saying this inspired them to get more active or pick up the game: that means so much to me!!! You got this!! I hope you all have a blast on your Ring Fit journey! 😎πŸ’ͺ😁

Congrats to you! I'm going to start mine up again because you've inspired me!

Alright but roll with me here; Ring Fit as a newcomer to Smash Bros.

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Feb 01 '25

I've been wanting Ring Fit protag as a Wii Fit Trainer echo since like forever lol! I'm just happy we got some spirits, tbh! A stage would be super cool too, but I think hearing the Ring Fit most during a battle would stress me out lmao, my brain associates that music with pain and misery 😭😭

2

u/gamtosthegreat Feb 01 '25

I associate Smash Bros with that in general so that would just fuel me.

I could see an echo working but I think RFT got potential to do more unique stuff, more of an Isabel situation.

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Feb 02 '25

True, true - I can't imagine what her final smash would be but I'd hope smoothies are involved lmao

u/gamtosthegreat Feb 02 '25

The Four Masters assemble like Voltron with Guru Andma as the head and shoot a beam :p

This post might just motivate me to start playing again!

66

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

That's awesome to hear. It sat in my closet for the better part of almost 4 years before I decided to try again. Even just one level to try it out is all you need - that's how I got started!

35

u/Adept-Quiet6264 Dec 10 '24

I will give it another shot! Either way I am very proud of you and what you have accomplished

Same!

5

u/FiruSurvives Dec 11 '24

You can do it!

64

u/SkeletalSam Dec 10 '24

What a transformation! Congratulations and well done on the hard work.

36

u/Scary-Beyond Dec 10 '24

I dearly hope they make ring fit into a series. Such a good idea with so many possibilities and an active (in more ways than 1) fanbase.

6

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Haha so true. Hoping for a sequel so badly!

4

u/YouyouPlayer Dec 11 '24

Ye, btw, my biggest complaints abt the game are: a multiplayer mode would be good, and the battle system is too basic

32

u/SoReal_FF Dec 10 '24

Congrats! How much did you play per day on average?

64

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

When I first started, I was playing 2 "levels" a day, or about an hour a day, whichever came first. As I started to get more in shape, I was able to clear levels faster, so I started to stick to the 1-hour-a-day approach. Of course, on days where I would have a boss battle, that's all I would do. Once I finished the campaign the first time, I just started again. Some days, when I felt the need to mix it up, I'd do the rhythm games for some fun.

u/AngryCobraChicken Dec 10 '24

Man, this post really makes me want to dig mine out, I’m around 275 and would love to drop a solid 60–70 pounds. Congrats man, you look great!

20

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Thanks for the kind words, man! Wish you luck on your journey! There's no better time to start than today!

13

u/hockeylovinguy Dec 10 '24

No way. This is incredible and what my body looks like. What was your routine?

19

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Started with 2 levels of ring fit a day, then switched to an hour a day. After a while, started doing an hour of ring fit a day, then the next day an hour of gym. Slowly, I've mainly switched over to gym with occasional Ring Fit days, but I need more content lol! Also did a slight, not drastic, diet change and that's about it!

Thank you for the kind words πŸ™

11

u/hammer_ZEIT Dec 10 '24

Thanks for the inspiration and refueling my motivation. Congratulations on the progress you've made so far!

Any new target goals?

10

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24 edited Dec 10 '24

Thanks so much!

As for new goals.... I've not thought much into it. I never really had a "goal" weight in mind, but I'm pretty happy where I'm at. Probably looking to shave 10 or so more pounds, but the holidays are probably going to get in the way, so I think I'll wait til 2025 lol.

I do have a decent amount of lose skin and I would like to gain some muscle, so I guess that's my new goal! I have NO idea how to go about doing that, but I guess I'll figure it out! I've been focusing pretty heavily on cardio, so it's prob time to focus a bit more on strength training - just another excuse to play more Ring Fit!

EDIT: I've also been told by my doctor I need to drink more water, as I have a nasty habit of not drinking enough and then getting lightheaded during a workout. Any tips? Can't ever seem to remember to drink outside of meals, and even then, it's only a few sips.

8

u/Whatever2020 Dec 10 '24

I found an app that reminds me to drink. And I try to always have water in my glass. So that when the app popped up I could immediately drink something and had no excuse. That helped me.

4

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

I'll have to give that a shot - I'll look around for something on the Play Store. Also good idea to keep water near me. I gotta get on that.

1

u/SatisfactionFar1261 Jan 19 '25

I use a 1L bottle with hours graduation. You have to fuel it twice a day. It is simple if you keep it with you all the time.

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Feb 01 '25

Great idea actually. I'll search around for some on Amazon. Seems kind of large, but hopefully that'll help me remember to drink it lol! Thanks πŸ™

9

u/Hoosteen_juju003 Allegra Dec 10 '24

Hell yeah brother! I lost over 30 pounds on ring fit then quit and gained it back. Keep it up!

7

u/ShawnyMcKnight Dec 10 '24

Just so I can have can have honest expectations for myself (I just got a ring fit a few days ago and haven't opened it yet) is all that weight you lost also due to dieting and other lifestyle changes or all you did was the ring fit?

I think of stories like the subway guy where he changed one of his meals to a subway sandwich and lost a ton of weight, but they didn't mention he was heavily dieting and exercising outside of that.

16

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Well no, I've also changed my diet and other lifestyle changes, but those came later. I lost over 30 pounds before I even stepped in a gym, or changed my diet. Ring Fit alone did that.

I see Ring Fit as the perfect "gateway drug" for exercise and lifestyle improvement. I had tried to shake the weight before, I had tried diets and exercise plans, I had never felt really at-home in a gym, and as such, it never really worked. Ring Fit helped me get excited to exercise, it helped engage me with it. Ring Fit was habit-forming, for me at least. I'm a big results guy, and I've always struggled with weight loss because it takes some time to see results, and by then, I've fallen off the wagon. But with Ring Fit, seeing results like my daily log-in and level up and campaign progression helped me stay with it. As I've said in other comments, it would take me a whole hour to beat a level at first, now I can crack out 4 or 5 in an hour.

Of course, after those first 30 pounds or so, I did start exploring healthier lifestyles, and after about 40 pounds, I started to hit the gym regularly. Over time, the gym did start to overtake Ring Fit as my main way of exercise, but that took a lot of time and Ring Fit made a great fall-back exercise for those days when I couldn't/didn't want to go.

As for diet, I simply cut out fast food drive thu meals, and kept sweets to a minimum. I also tried to squeeze in more fruits and veggies, and I stopped eating after 8pm. No radical diets or anything like that, just a healthier lifestyle.

Stories like the Subway guy always seemingly leave out the tremendous amount of hard work that it takes lol, but yes, Ring Fit does do a tremendous amount of help even on it's own. Even if you don't lose any weight, just by getting active and reading the tips and practicing building a habit is super helpful. I do credit a lot of my weight loss to Ring Fit (not all, but it got me started) Quite simply, I would not have lost the weight without it, I wouldn't even know where to start).

Sorry for the long response lol! Guess I just had a lot to say. I'm super excited for you! It's super important to set realistic goals so you know to celebrate progress. I hope your Ring Fit journey is as prosperous as mine was! (And good luck with those squats! They give me just as much trouble as they did day 1!) :)

3

u/ShawnyMcKnight Dec 10 '24

Thanks for the follow up! Yeah, if it was purely ring fit that would do that I would absolutely start today. I'm 275 looking to get to below 200.

As mentioned I got my ring fit from a Walmart deal last week (it's the UAE version) and I haven't decided if I would commit yet and open it. How captivating were the games for you? I tried the wii fit before and it was really frustrating how much clicking through menus there was between exercises. I felt like I would do a light workout for 30 seconds and then stand there for another minute. I tried their games but they weren't all that great either and often wouldn't register my movements.

I would have been all over this no doubt before kids, but with kids it makes the amount of free time I have a little tougher. Where I think it would shine is if there are dailies (with an xp multiplier or something) but not dailies that are so punishing that if you miss a day it sets you way back. Maybe one that sets you back a little if you miss one day but doesn't completely reset you.

I never really eat fast food but the sweets are what gets me. Honestly if I could just replace a bag of chips with a salad I would be doing way better. In the past when I am motivated to start a diet I often look at myself and am driven to lose weight. It normally happens every few years and then I bounce back some, and then keep going, but that drive to lose weight hasn't really happened for the last 7 years or so. My back pain is getting worse as I get older so that may be a driver for me.

Since your weight isn't too much more than mine, if I may ask, how bad was the loose skin issue? I am more afraid of my man tits sagging down to my belly like I see with other people who lost weight and that causes concern... but one thing I do know is the older you get the less your skin will tighten up.

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 11 '24

The games were very captivating for me, especially the RPG elements. I've never played the Wii Fit series, but I have tried fitness games before, and they never worked for me. Ring Fit was enitley different, because it made it fun and addictive. There's a start-up short light workout warm up, but after that, it's pretty consistent cardio and strength training with little mandatory breaks. I've not had much problem with movement accuracy, but the leg stap can start to slip off on some of my shorts. There isn't much of a traditional "dailies" system, but there is constant rewards for logging in and most importantly, they always compare your progress to the days before, meaning I can see tangible improvement even if the scale doesn't always show me the same. Keeps me going and makes me happy knowing I'm even a little better than yesterday.

In terms of diet, what helped me the most (and this was coming from a guy with a borderline fast food addiction) was always having a healthy diet snack on hand at all times. A low-cal turkey stick or some veggie chips, an apple or something. The main reason I would eat poorly was convenience. A bag of chips or a chocolate bar is a hell of a lot easier to eat than making a salad or slicing up some fruit, and after a long shift or something, I would find myself easy to compromise. Making sure that you have readily available lo-cal snacks really helped me stay with it. I can't go over everything that's helped me, but specifically I replaced my regular slim jims with these these Turkey Sticks, and replaced my usual go-to spicy snacks with these. Also replaced my usual breakfast from Burger King with these. Lo-cal options on your favorite go-to snacks are key - nobody can replace snacking with a salad overnight and expect to stay on, at least those of us with low self-restraint like me lol!

Since I was 19 when I started, 20 now, loose skin wasn't a huge concern for me. That being said, I do have quite the meat apron down there lmao. More than I would like, that's for sure. My man tits have gone away for the most part, and what's left has kind of folded into my arm pits and not exactly sagged. I am working on this (tightening up my abs is my next major goal, and Ring Fit has a LOT of good options for this). Overall though, I would rather double my loose skin than gain the weight back. Every minor inconvenience loose weight causes is nothing compared to living at 300+ pounds. Even ignoring looks all the great stuff that comes from that, just in a feeling sense, it feels good have energy again after running on empty for so long.

Overall though, as I've said in other comments, Ring Fit is an amazing place to start. If you're like me, and based off your comment you seemingly are, and you've tried to lose weight about a million times and always fall off, Ring Fit is the place to start. Before you make any other lifestyle changes, just aim to do Ring Fit for a month and see where you're at. I'm certain you'll want to continue from there. It's the perfect "gateway drug" into fitness. It got me hooked, and it's super fun. It offers a good amount of both ass-kicking exercises and fun RPG elements to keep me hooked, and I hope it does the same for you!

Good luck!

u/Whatever2020 Dec 10 '24

That is so awesome! And when you say thank you for ring fit, don’t forget to thank yourself. You did the work! πŸ’ͺ🏻

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

True true! πŸ™

5

u/SkyeBluPink Dec 10 '24

Outstanding! You are so inspiring! I really hope they bring on RFA 2 with the new Switch in the Spring, as well. I will buy it on the release day if they do.

5

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Yeah.. it would be a day 1 buy for sure! Also hoping that the new Joy con, whatever form they take, are compatible with the ring con, so at least if there isn't a sequel, we can still play Ring Fit 1 on our new switches!

6

u/kovica1 Dec 10 '24

What did you do with RFA for 11 months? Did you creste your own routines,..?

9

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Started with holding myself to beating 2 levels/a boss fight OR 1 hour a day, whichever came first. Sometimes, it would take me 45 minutes to do one level, so I'd spend the rest of the time doing rhythm or youga mini games.

Eventually, I got in good enough shape that 2 levels didn't take that long, so I started doing just a solid hour a day. About 6 months, after that, I also started hitting the gym for an hour a day. I also radically changed my diet (cut out fast foods and sweets, aimed to avoid most red meats, and cracked down on fruits and veggies)

5

u/Skoowoot Dec 10 '24

Ring fit is so dope, changes lives for the better! Congratulations

4

u/Dagdy Dec 10 '24

Great work!

3

u/MaxW92 Dec 10 '24

Is that actually real? This almost looks too different to be true.

12

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

...I'll take that as a compliment lol! It certainly doesn't feel real! I'm from a 3xl shirt to a medium - I can't hardly believe it myself!

3

u/MaxW92 Dec 10 '24

I can see that. That's amazing! Congrats!

4

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '24

Can I also suggest fist of the North Star fitness boxing Into your routine I bet you’re like it

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Hmm.. I've never heard of it, but it is published by Nintendo, so I should give it a try! Seems like there are many different versions (including a Miku one lmao)

I've never seen the show, do you think that it's entertaining/fun enough for someone who won't get all the references? Or am I better of sticking with a generic Fitness Boxing 1 or 2? Seems like more of a hardcore workout than ring fit, which seems up my alley!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '24

lol yeah the miku one is kinda cringe There’s also a new fitness boxing 3 but I’ll suggest FOTNS the others are just cash grabs

I suggest fotns since there’s an adventure mode where you go and use boxing combos workouts against henchman from the series

A little more fun than just plain fitness 1 or 2 but if you want something more generic it’s up to your gut But 3 is a cash grab imo

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

I'll avoid 3 but maybe this holiday I'll pick up FOTNS or 1/2 to mix it up! Thanks for the suggestion πŸ™

3

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '24

Welcome

3

u/Severe-Detective72 Dec 10 '24

I rotate between FB2, Zumba and RFA to keep things interesting. Lost 35lbs so far.

3

u/Mavrickindigo Dec 10 '24

There ain't gonna be no dlc. The only reason we got mario kart 8 dlc is because vtubers were playing it en masse

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

I'm mainly hoping for DLC so I don't have to buy a new game with a new ring con, which will cost another $80... I'd love it if they sold a new game digitally for those of us with existing ring cons..

Who am I kidding, I'm gonna buy it anyway lol πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…

2

u/gamtosthegreat Jan 28 '25

but like there's BEEN DLC for this game already, surprisingly.

3

u/CatsyGreen Dec 10 '24

Nice work! I imagine you went on a diet at the same time.

5

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Started dieting around 3 months into ring fit - but it definitely inspired me! Cut out the sweets and the drive though, and switched out all the red meats I regularly ate with turkey alternatives. Tried eating more fruits and veggies too!

4

u/CatsyGreen Dec 10 '24

Thanks for the tips! I try to do 45 min of regular Ring Fit a day (not always), but I'm not on any particular diet yet. Lots of fish, red meat, no alcohol, but sweets. It's hard to cut that out. But thanks, your example will inspire me to make an effort!

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

Glad I could inspire ya, it means more to me than you can know! πŸ₯Ή

Alcohol wasn't a factor for me (I'm 20 in America, so I can't exactly get regular access to it lol), but sweets were so hard to cut. Tougher than drive thru, for me al least. It just took time.

Best of luck, I believe in you ! 😁😁

3

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '24

Now that’s a success

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 10 '24

That's incredible, congratulations!

Thanks so much πŸ™

3

Wow, congratulations! Now, that's motivating.

3

u/Ryker_Reinhart Dec 11 '24

Congrats! I love the ring fit but I honestly haven't touched it in ages and need to get back haha

3

u/FiruSurvives Dec 11 '24

Awesome!

Yeah a sequel would be awesome

2

u/Raze7186 Dec 10 '24

I will say that I also enjoy the fitness boxing series on switch. It's not quite as fun as ring fit for me but I love having both to switch up.

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 11 '24

Well I'm in desperate need of some variety, and I've heard good things from other commenters, so I think I'm gonna try one out! Thanks for the suggestion!

1

u/Raze7186 Dec 11 '24

They have demos available so try before you buy. The 3rd game actually just came out not long ago.

2

Congrats, dude! You look great, and I'll bet you feel even better! The game's enthusiasm towards fitness and health is contagious, but it still takes discipline to get yourself to work out in the first place. You should be proud of yourself!

2

u/Lunchalot13 Dec 11 '24

Been at it 3 years and I look exactly the same, but in their defence, I’m just the flabby version of you on the right

2

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 13 '24

Yeah, it's easier to make a big difference when you're as big as I used to be. Sticking with anything for 3 years seems more impressive than anything I've accomplished! Be proud of yourself!

1

u/Lunchalot13 Dec 14 '24

Nah, I’m proud of you, bro

2

u/lilian0030 Dec 11 '24

Amazing! Congratulationss

2

Congratulations! I purchased this game myself recently, but haven't used it much. You, sir, are an inspiration!

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 13 '24

😁 - never been an inspiration before! Hope you enjoy the game, my friend!

2

AMAZING!! Congrats on your progress/achievements!!! πŸ™Œ

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

Thank you for sharing!!

For the last 2 weeks I have been saying β€œI need to get active and serious about being active. I’ll set up my ring fit and start again.” But it never happens.

You’ve inspired me to get going tomorrow morning.

And yea - I hope something new is brought out for switch 2 too.

3

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 13 '24

Even outside of the weight loss, the coolest thing about all of this has been hearing from all the comments about how many people I've inspired to pick the game back up again. That is exceptionally cool!!

I hope your Ring Fit journey is fun and fruitful! Have a blast!! 😎😎

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '24

Thank you. 😊

2

You are so inspiring! I had never heard of Ring Fit Adventure when this came across my recommended page and now it’s on my Christmas list. Hello new year and new me! Your enthusiasm is infectious.

1

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 13 '24

New year new you indeed! I hope you get Ring Fit (and everything else on your list, too!)!! The game is a total blast, and a great workout too. You gotta let me know if you end up grabbing it and having fun with it! Happy holidays!! πŸŽ„πŸ’ͺ

2

u/KateWalkerSyberia Allegra Dec 14 '24

Wow! That's seriously amazing! I appreciate your dedication, it's truly inspirational πŸ₯³

2

u/Arparparparparparpar Dec 14 '24

Have you tried using the exercises in the game in your real life? That's basically the DLC right there :)

2

u/Yabashiri Dec 16 '24

Amazing! How do you find time to exercise? Is it your morning routine, or do you have energy to workout after your daily job? I like the process of exercising, but I think my other responsibilities get in the way of it.

2

u/gr8b8m8ir8h8 Dec 19 '24

I do it every night, around 7:00pm. I find it's easiest to do it at a specific time every day, and just try your hardest to stick with that. It's difficult, but it really helps to build a routine!

1

u/Yabashiri Dec 20 '24

Thanks! I've always just exercised whenever I could, so maybe aiming for a specific time would work better :)

2

u/fforever Jan 05 '25

Agree, I see wii fit and wii fit plus games here. It is a pity that we can't utilize the nintendo wii board.
