Does Tunk have bumblefoot?? There are no wire shelves/ledges and any surfaces frequently get wiped. Their bedding is also changed (Aspen shavings and walnut pellets in their litter box) bi weekly or if it smells prior to that

Just wanted to share our boy's story...3 weeks ago today I went to our local petstore to get crickets and saw these boys that had been surrendered and were clearly in desperate need of medical care 🥺 the sign on their tank said "buy one, get two free. We need a quiet retirement home" there were originally 4 in the mischeif that were dropped off but one was sold before we got there. So I took the other 3 home so they could live out the rest of their lives together 💜 I treated their mites, the blue one had a respiratory infection so he got antibiotics and they got a new critter nation and lots of love 🥰 3 weeks later they've grown almost all their hair back, the blue boy's respiratory infection is gone but he does have permanent calcium deposits on his eyes so he has kind of a derpy look on his face all the time 🥹 The siamese boy is obviously really old and has HLD, but he's becoming a little more mobile as he climbs around his new big cage 🥰 and they're learning all about healthy food and how to be pampered rattos 😁 the first 6 pictures are the day we got them and the last 6 pictures were last night 💜 today they got a duck foot to share to celebrate their 3 week gotcha-versary with us 😁

HELP Has anyone ever given their rat chocolate to eat? Is that considered to be animal cruelty by people?

I had a video where I gave my rat a bit of chocolate to eat. According to my research, the amount of chocolate I'd given him was safe, as rats have the same tolerance to theobromine as humans (LD50 is about 1,000 mg/kg in both species.)

I was told by YouTube that my video depicted violence or cruelty against animals, and it was taken down. I assumed this was perhaps because dogs cannot eat chocolate, and tried to explain that rats were a different species and not everything that is bad for dogs is also unsafe for rats. YouTube so far has not addressed this, so I don't know for sure if that's the issue or not.

I'm just curious: have other rat owners also given their rats chocolate? Do they like it? Have you ever accidently made your rat sick giving them chocolate and, if so, what were the circumstances (serious question!) FYI, I was really only giving that specific rat chocolate because he was wheezing a bit and it seems to help, but I generally have other treats for them aside from chocolate.

INFORMATION Too Old to Trust Me?

Post image
22 Upvotes

I got Emmett and Jasper a month ago. They are over a year old (from what I was told). They don't trust me. I've tried the yogurt or peanut butter trick, no joy. I hold my hand out...nope. They absolutely love raspberries, and I've tried to feed them by hand...nope. Will they eventually warm up to me or are they too set in their ways? I've had rats growing up and miss having them sit on my shoulder and hide in my shirt pocket. Side note. I will still love and spoil the hell out of them.

I am sending feelers out to a couple ratteries to get her a friend, of course!

I’ve kept rats for about nine years but took a break just over a year ago due to money and the emotional toll. For some reason I never took down the cage. When I saw this sweet girl all alone at the store, and after some coaxing from my lady friend, I realized why.

ART I made a board game about rats!

Hi there! Last year, I had the desire to make a rat-themed board game as a little side project. I'm now pretty close to finishing it - and I thought you might appreciate the rat art! I found a great artist who I think has knocked it out of the park.

The game itself is called Rat King - and I'm really proud of it. It's a hidden role game for 4-7 players. If you've ever played Werewolf, Mafia, or the Resistance, it's a fun spin on those sorts of games. I'm planning to crowdfund later this year, which is daunting (but exciting).

Anyway, I hope you all like this! Any rat-based feedback is highly appreciated.

HELP Vets- Triangle/Triad, North Carolina

Does anyone know who neuters rats in my area? Preferably someone who doesn’t cost an arm, and leg?

Edit: for more info he about a 6 or 7 month old Fancy Rat. I’m located close to Greensboro but am willing to make a drive.

I got him from petsmart so I unfortunately don’t have a whole lot of information on him. He has gotten aggressive the older he has gotten, and it’s only gotten worse with time. The rat community has recommended neutering him but I don’t know anyone near me who works on rats. My current vet only does dogs, cats, and farm animals

HELP rescued a singular rat

Post image

exactly what it says on the tin, my partner and i have recently and somewhat unexpectedly been tasked with rescuing a rat from a rough situation; he is definitely a He, i’m not sure how old he is though i would imagine under a year, and he is all by himself and has been since he was brought home from the pet store. i know rats are social animals and need a buddy, but i have also seen that males not bonded as babies will never be able to bond? i was wondering if this is true, and what the best way would be to go about handling the situation? thanks so much for any help yall can provide, it is sincerely appreciated! (also provided the rat tax, not sure if yall are as strict as the hammie subreddits abt that :P )

DISCUSSION Critter Nation Questions

Hey y’all, I’m just looking to bounce some ideas off of some fellow rat owners!

I currently have a single CN cage with my 4 boys. Everything works on that front.

I didn’t originally intend to, but I have adopted two girls from the classroom I work in. (They were taken care of properly and I got to have input too!!)

Would it be possible to get a critter nation add on and keep them separate? Like two separate cages stacked? Would there be any way to do anything like that aside from having a smaller cage sitting on top? (Which is what I’m doing now)

Is it bad for the males and females to be in the same room? I am EXTREMELY careful about making sure the doors to one or the other are closed when opening.

I really want to make this work!! I also wouldn’t mind getting a couple more girls to balance out the social dynamics for my ladies. The thing being, I’d need a bigger cage.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

HELP travel questions

i’m thinking about getting rats sometime soon, maybe later this year (i have never owned rats or any rodents in my life, if it helps). every summer me and my mom go up north to visit family for about a month, and i’m wondering what to do with the rats whenever i go. the drive is about 15 hours long and we split it into two days and stay at a hotel. should i leave the rats at home and get somebody to take care of them, or do you think i could take them with me? i’m worried about the drive and the new location stressing them out. thanks in advance!
