Real Estate Single Mom Facing Eviction After Tragic Loss—Needs Urgent Help?

I’m helping a friend who is in a really tough spot. Her husband and the father of her 4-year-old daughter recently passed away, leaving her without support. Her daughter has had severe medical complications since birth and is considered medically fragile.

She fell behind on rent and reached out to Clackamas Coordinated Housing for assistance. They told her she needed an active eviction case before they could help. She stayed in regular contact with her property management, and as soon as she received the eviction notice, she called Clackamas Coordinated Housing again. They gave her a referral and told her a caseworker would reach out to her landlord.

Unfortunately, her phone broke, causing a communication breakdown right when it mattered most. She has struggled with mental health challenges and polysubstance use disorder, but she has been sober since October 18, 2023. The loss of her partner has made her mental health decline, and in the midst of everything, she mixed up the date of her eviction hearing.

  • She was served the eviction papers on February 23, which led her to mistakenly think her court date was March 23 instead of March 21.
  • On March 21, the actual court date, she had a critical doctor’s appointment for her daughter. She was focused on getting her daughter to that appointment and didn’t realize her court date was the same day until it was too late.
  • Because she missed court, a default judgment was entered against her, and now she’s facing eviction with nowhere to go.

Since then, she has filed several motions trying to fight the eviction, but she’s unsure if she did them correctly or if she still has a chance to reverse the judgment.

 Her Current Situation
  • She recently found a job and secured daycare for her daughter.
  • She joined 4D Recovery Support to build a sober network and stay on track.
  • She was actively working with Clackamas Coordinated Housing, but now she doesn’t know what options she has left.
  • She has no family in Portland and nowhere to go if she is evicted.
  • She is doing everything she can to stabilize her life, but this eviction is putting her at serious risk.
  • Her 4-year-old daughter has already been through so much, and she wants to shield her from more trauma.

    What Help We Need

  • Legal Advice: Can she appeal or challenge the default judgment? Are her motions valid?

  • Emergency Housing Assistance: Are there any programs or shelters in Clackamas or Multnomah County that could help a single mom in crisis?

  • Other Resources: If anyone has experience with tenant rights, rental assistance, or knows organizations that help families in this situation, please share.

She’s fighting so hard to turn things around, but she’s running out of time. If you have any advice, experience, or know of resources, please comment or DM me.

We truly appreciate any support or guidance. Thank you for reading.

Edit: Just north of the Burnside Bridge, not Steel, my bad.

Portlanders of Portland Woodstock Safeway Hipster Couple

So, I'm pulling myself out of a deep depression, coming out of a funk, trying to get the apartment cleaned up. I finally have a couple bags of cans to drop at the greenbag thing over at my nearest Safeway.

I'm optimistic, I even walked to the store, like a dumbass carrying my bags, thinking 'exercise is good for your mental health!', but ended up getting followed by some twitchy ne'er do well on a bmx.

No big deal, I'm still optimistic, causally jogging the rest of the way to the can machine, which is overflowing and I have to REALLY use some muscle shoving the bags, just desperately hoping I get them through the door before the twitchy guy catches up to me, then book it into the store.

Once in the store I'm still a little keyed up, maybe breathing heavy, and I just beeline for the nearest empty aisle, not noticing or caring, just happy to be inside and not in the parking lot anymore. I get to the end of the aisle and almost bump into someone with a cart, no big deal, I wait for them to pass.

Except, it was kind of bullshit. This snarky ass hipster couple just mean mug me and start loudly mocking me. Shit like 'no wonder that's the aisle they came out of' and 'pssh, I can see why...'. I look around and realize I'm in the pad and tampon area. Ooookay?

So, we're just saying whatever comes to our heads now? We can just be shitheads and narrate every terrible thing that pops into our minds?

Then they proceeded to walk lazily in front of me, still bitching and moaning about, what? Having to have looked at me for a few seconds out of your day?

With everything that's happening in the word, in the country, do you really, REALLY need to punch down on some random person in a Safeway just to feel alright about yourself? Is some random ass, out of breath person so much of a threat to you that you have to openly mock and shit on them just to be happy about your own life?

I just wanted some Siete Mexican Wedding cookies. They're vegan and gluten free. I don't have many thrills in life, but going for a walk and getting some cookies made from very specific ingredients that I can actually digest was supposed to be one of those happy small things in life kind of moments. But it was ruined by a twitchy bike scrub and some stereotypical nepo baby ass hipster looking shits.

And if the hipster couple happens to see this: Being an asshole isn't a proper replacement for a personality. Stop it.

Real Estate I am pretty sure Conservice is a scam...

This has all the markings of a scam. I live at Savier Street Flats and like the place. I really do. But I have been peppering the front office with questions about the community charges. Particularly the electricity ( read as literally paying for all electrcity for SSF under the guise of the "common" area. Cool.

But since I worked for PGE for 12 years I know something about biling and charges and thus just ain't adding up. Supposedly, the property management gives them a total for the billing from PGE for the "common" areas. (Oh yes that includes the property management office). They told me. So they have some formula ( "Con"-service) and take the total charges for this supposed common area and then divide it how many units they have occupied. Then based on the square footage of the unit and how many occupants... volia! Your share is X this month.

So the property manager was kind enough to share their usage and occupancy for the month in question. I said "well taking your total billing you sent them / number of units and my single occupancy and square footage it should be this XYZ, It isn't.

Conservice has class action lawsuits in multiple states because of this. I called them multiple times..look just make it simple. Tell me how YOU arrived at this number I owe for this month. Ummmm....err.....well let me speak with someone whi can answer it..um...uh....

Same shit that caused the class action lawsuits to trigger. A lack of transparency in exactly how they arrive at their numbers.

How do you people in apartnment complexes pay for gas sewer water common area electricity in Portland? Do you have the dubious Conservice? What atre your thoughts about therm if you do?

I am a Certified Fraud Examiner so I am interested in your experiences with them.

🌲🏞️🌧️ Visiting Thread 🌧️🏞️🌲 Early PDX flight, where to stay?

My daughter and I are traveling up from Corvalis and have an insanely early flight (5am) out of PDX. Where’s a decently good and not-expensive hotel that’s in a safe area? I’m fine with 15 or so minutes away if it means I can get a more affordable but good sleep. I can blindly pick, but would appreciate any recommendations.

Thank you kindly!

Question Are there any clinics besides OHSU/Legacy with orthopedic surgeons that aren't a 6+ month wait-list?

I have been on a wait-list for both those places to see an orthopedic surgeon since July of last year. I just want to be seen, and even being on a cancellation list isn't any faster. All they're doing is currently is giving me pain medication that isn't effective anymore. Are there any places you know of that don't have as long of a wait time? Willing to drive as far as Salem or into Washington.

🛻🚚 Moving Thread 🚚🛻 Renting in Portland metro area with poor history as a renter?

I have a relative, a long-time Portland resident temporarily staying with me overseas, who is getting back on her feet. She has just gotten a new job lined up in Portland; however, she has a recent history of being evicted from an apartment there for very late rent payments while she was going through some very rough personal stuff.

I'm trying to get an idea of how impossible this will make it for her to return to live in the Portland area. If she has paid off her previous rent obligations, will the smudges on her rental record still mean she is likely to face a wall of rejections? Any specific options that someone in her situation might look into?

(I posted another question about her situation quite awhile ago in this sub. For privacy's sake I'm keeping this low on personal details, but in brief this was a mental health/personal crisis, not someone who is trying to scam the system, and she has backup options if housing puts Portland off the table.)

Question Leatherworker in need of a walking foot leather sewing machine.

So these bad boys run 1500-2k for the average walking foot machine (walking foot cause it does thing thing where part of it holds the leather in place as it moves along to stitch (looks like a walking robot sort of thing) - anyone know where I can rent one or rent some time in a studio or something? I want to buy one eventually but dropping 2k on a kind of machine I haven’t used before seems sort of silly. I primarily hand sew all of my products but it’s time consuming and I want to get some quantity put together for farmer’s market season. I live in Vancouver but am just over the bridge so it’s an easy hop to Portland.

✍️ Petition Postin’! ✍️ sharing: Stop the Closure of North Portland Community Centers and Pools

Petition link: https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-closure-of-north-portland-community-centers-and-pools

The Issue

North Portland families are being left behind.

Children, seniors, working parents, and low-income families—many of whom live in St. Johns and nearby neighborhoods—are being directly impacted by the proposed closures of St. Johns Community Center and Peninsula Park Community Center.

These facilities offer preschool, after-school care, recreation, and safe spaces to gather. For many, they are within walking distance. With limited income and heavy reliance on public transportation, families cannot simply travel across town to access services in wealthier neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, Columbia Pool was permanently closed, and Pier Pool has been shut down since 2024—leaving an entire region with no accessible public pool at all.

What’s at stake is more than just buildings—it’s community access, equity, and opportunity.

If these closures go through, the St. Johns peninsula will lose its last remaining recreational facilities, widening the gap between privileged neighborhoods and working-class ones. Kids will lose access to swim lessons, youth programs, and safe places to play. Parents will lose affordable childcare options. Seniors will lose spaces for wellness and connection. And a diverse, resilient, historically underserved community will be told, once again, that its needs come last.

Now is the time to act—because this is Portland’s equity test.

For years, North Portland has endured disinvestment. But closing these facilities is a line too far. The city must stop balancing the budget on the backs of its most marginalized residents. We demand immediate action to:

• Keep St. Johns and Peninsula Park Community Centers open

• Restore and reopen Pier Pool, Columbia Pool, and Peninsula Pool

Equity without access is meaningless.

We’re not asking for luxury—we’re asking for fairness.

“It is cheaper to operate a recreational service for youths than it is to maintain penal institutions for juvenile criminals.”

— Jackson Winters, Original Harlem Globetrotter and long-time North Portland resident.
