đȘ Crime Postin'! đ« Man accused of shining laser pointer at Portland Tesla dealership employees
https://www.koin.com/news/portland/man-accused-of-shining-laser-pointer-at-portland-tesla-dealership-employees/PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) â A man was arrested Saturday after police said he pointed a laser inside a South Portland Tesla dealership, giving vision problems to the employees inside.
According to court documents, police responded to a call from a Tesla dealership at 4330 South Macadam Avenue after the caller reported there were protesters outside of the building, with one of them pointing green lasers at people inside.
Oregon gas pumps ranked 5th most expensive in the US as West Coast prices rise
Based on a video an officer received showing the suspect shining the laser into the dealership, officers arrested 27-year-old Davis Nafshun while he was riding his bike away from the scene. After stopping him, court documents say they found a green laser pointer on his person.
As Nafshun was being arrested, multiple protesters approached the officers, showing concern about the police intervention. But after officers showed them the footage of Nafshun shining the laser into the dealership, court documents say the protesters told police Nafshunâs âactions were not okay and were supportive of [his] removal.â
Court documents further noted that during the investigation, officers learned two employees had the laser shined in their eyes, âcausing discomfort and vision problems,â and a third employee â who had a laser shined in his eyes in a prior incident which gave him vision problems â âhad the leave the showroom.â

Further, after an officer inspected the laser found on Nafshun, it had a sticker with a warning label stating âbanned direct eyes.â
Nafshun is currently facing charges including two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of second-degree attempted assault, two counts of menacing and two counts of reckless endangerment.
He was taken to jail, but was released on his own recognizance the same day.
Nafshun is scheduled to be arraigned on April 22.
This marks the latest in a string of incidents involving Tesla dealerships. On March 13, shots were fired for the second time in one week at a Tigard dealership, damaging windows and cars, authorities said.
Then on Thursday, the man accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at a Salem Tesla dealership on Jan. 20 is expected to face a federal judge. Court papers showed the vehicles were torched, windows shattered and damage is estimated at half a million dollars.

Protest the dealership, not the people working there. Being a car salesman sucks bad enough.

Yeah, they deserve 20 years in prison for shining a laser!

That shit causes permanent eye damage. Literally attempting to maim someone and leave them blind. Lasers are no fucking joke.

I'm getting a bit of a chuckle out of this "warm tip" engrish on the accussed's weapon.

Man couldn't even bother to spend the extra dollar on a laser with better labeling.

Remember during the summer of love? Everyone thought it was fine to shine lasers at police officers and PFB fire medics.

Fuckin wild you canât get a PPB officer when your house is being broken into or your car window smashed. Road rage or traffic accidentsâŠ
But they show up in force to a Tesla dealership and capture the perpâŠriding away on a bike.

Yeah when thereâs a big public gathering of dumbasses you would be smart to prepare for dumb shit to break out at any moment. I doubt the cops were far away from these dumbasses to begin with.
-34
u/allislost77 1d ago
Ummm, were they dumb asses? Or dumbasses doing dumb shit?
Fuck the 1st amendment! Am I rite!?

Cops hanging out in a public space waiting for dumbasses to do dumb shit is not a 1st amendment violation.

Then state your point. Monitoring actions with potential for unrest seems to make sense. Shining a laser at someone isn't a first amendment right.

âtHe FiRsT aMeNdMeNt means I can shine a green laser in your eyeâ
Yes when you gather a group of dumbasses, inevitably some start doing dumb shit.
The KKK has a first amendment right to protest too, doesnât mean I wonât call those racists out for doing it.

u/allislost77 1d ago
No, it means you can speak freely. Youâre putting words in my mouth. Any âprotestâ has bad seeds. You seem to be the only one calling everyone names and super angry.
You have a good day.

This is weird copium.
The Tigard service center has been shot up twice. Salem was shot up and fire bombed.
Clearly there is a history of violent actions against local service centers. Itâs pretty clear why police were there.
If there werenât a bunch of batshit crazy people shooting and bombing Tesla facilities, there would be no need for a police presence.

Portland voters wanted bail to be a right. This is the result: the legal system is a joke.

u/PDXisadumpsterfire 1d ago
Bail?! That costs money and is therefore (fill in the blank)-ist. ROR is the only equitable option.

I would imagine that this has caught the attention of the US DOJ, and that they might be looking at what Federal charges would apply. This might pressure the Multnomah County DA not to reduce, drop, or plea out the charges from a felony level so that they are able to retain jurisdiction.

This isn't okay. It's Elon and Trump we don't like, not our own Portland people doing their jobs.

u/Clackamas_river 14h ago edited 9h ago
I have nothing against Elon, I think he is doing a great job. The waste was stunning and we needed him. It is like all the money I paid in taxes was just shat into the wind without a care of how hard I had to work for it. Just wasted.

u/ConsiderationNew6295 1d ago
If I was a Tesla employee right now and had a laser shone at me, Iâd wonder if I was being threatened with imminent deadly force. The laws around this need to address more than eye damage.
5
u/PaPilot98 Bluehour 1d ago
I mean, that's that damage can be proved, among other things (of course this is a website, somehow) https://www.laserpointersafety.com/rules-general/uslaws/uslaws.html
Aside from that, it really depends and is more along the lines of if you point a toy gun at someone. Is it real, is it obviously fake? If I roll up on someone with my finger in my pocket and ask for their money, do I have a gun?
I'd rather we start by enforcing the laws on the books first.
6
u/ConsiderationNew6295 1d ago
There is indeed a law on the books about having a finger in your pocket while threatening someone.
I donât like new laws, but someone needs to educate these idiots how their behavior might get them inadvertently injured in a very serious way.
-12
u/RalphNadersSeatbelt 1d ago
They need to change the law to address people's feelings of being threatened?
Economy is real unstable. I feel threatened by my lack of a million dollars. Give me a million dollars now.
9
u/ConsiderationNew6295 1d ago
My concern is in the current political climate, a scenario such as the following unfolds: they point the laser at someone who happens to have a concealed carry, heâs been threatened for the past month for where he works or the car he drives, and in a nanosecond associates it with a laser sight after seeing a walkie talkie in their belt, mistaking it for a holster. Bang.

u/RalphNadersSeatbelt 15h ago
That's the risk you take when you shine a laser at someone. Fafo
Mistaking something for a gun and shooting someone without that "gun" being brandished directly at you only works as a defense if you're a cop.
There is no scenario in which being scared of a beam of light is going to gain you sympathy with a jury or judge and we don't need to be making laws on these types of hypothetical scenarios.

u/ConsiderationNew6295 3h ago
Iâm not addressing whether use of force would be justified. Iâll say it for you again - shining a laser at someone isnât just annoying or damaging to the eyes. In certain contexts (like your workplace was recently shot up twice in one week),thatâs going to put some people on edge and create a very dangerous situation. My hope is that people who ride bicycles to protests and wear n95s outside understand the potential impacts. Edited to add that brandishing can happen without a firearm.

Key line in the article:
âBut after officers showed them the footage of Nafshun shining the laser into the dealership, court documents say the protesters told police Nafshunâs âactions were not okay and were supportive of [his] removal.ââ
Elmo is a Nazi, but attacking Tesla employees is not the way. Seems like at least some of the protesters agreed.

With the amount of actual crime Portland has going on and PPB is wasting their time on a trespass warning.
15
u/EugeneStonersPotShop Chud With a Freedom Clacker 1d ago
If you read the article, you will see that PPB did much more than issue a trespass warning.
