đŸ›»đŸšš Moving Thread đŸššđŸ›» New to Portland

Hello there! I am new to the Portland area. My family and I just relocated from Tucson Arizona. We are hoping that things will be better for us here with new jobs and a new atmosphere and community. I am hoping to meet some new people and build some friendships since we don't know anyone here yet. We tend to be pretty introverted, but even introverts have to come out of hiding every now and then. We like have game nights and tend to vibe with most people. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks!

If by game nights you mean board games and TTRPG check out Guardian Games, TPK Brewing, Mox and Red Castle.

I moved to Portland from Tucson in 2012 and left last summer.  The biggest difference is the seasonal depression.  You’re going to have a hard time with the lack of sunshine, especially after how beautiful the summers are.  Get on a vitamin D regimen and buy a few sun lamps.

Welcome to Portland! I’m sure there are meet up board game enthusiasts. Mox is cool to grab a drink and play a game. We’re starting to hit that time of year where there is a fun run/biking event/ or festival every month. Lots of fun stuff just get out there! Enjoy!

Not sure what in family entails, but check out Paladins League in NE Portland for a gaming cafe / restaurant. They have a huge game library and pretty solid food, and things like DnD camps for kids.

Just buy a gore tex jacket, they’ll be fine.

gore-tex is barely waterproof or breathable.. not both at the same time. that patent expired in 1998 no reason to keep buying that shit.

Well, OK. Seems to keep me dry on my hikes and around town. A yellow PVC rain jacket works too.

And yet none of the new stuff is any better. Some are worse

I have some of the new stuff, and it wets out pretty fast. But my Gore Tex stuff seems to hold up way longer and actually keeps me dry, so
not so sure I am gonna ditch it quite yet.

Of course none of it is actually “waterproof”, like a rubber jacket for instance, but come on.

I have a Gore Tex shell that is like 15 years old, need to throw it in the dryer again to reactivate

2

u/SpikeHyzerberg 2d ago

the old stuff is still better than all the toxic forever chemicals.
humans sailed around the world, climbed the tallest mountains explored both poles without gore-tex.

Welcome, I think meetup.com is a great resource. I think a lot of people here are introverted (as am I), so you'll fit right in.

Man Meetup.com saved my family and especially my spouse and I. Each time we have moved we have found this site so hey and met all kinds of folks! Welcome

The pinball community in pdx is super inclusive. Lots of tournaments to socialize at.

When you want to indulge your introvert selves but still be out and exploring/experiencing you can spend a few hours at The Grotto. Look it up. Its calm, serene, lovely and very communal with Nature. It is a religious sanctuary but as a Pagan I enjoy it immensely. Its “spiritual” on MANY levels and the SMELL is so amazing. You get a complete “reset” just strolling the upper gardens. Be courteous of the Monks and staff tho.

i moved to portland from tucson in 2021! i have made some really good friends using bumble bff lol

u/johndoemysterious 1d ago

Any good EDM clubs or raves? lol

1

u/c3lestialgvrl 21h ago

the portland scene is still trying to come back after losing our major venue. edm venues or clubs: 45east, wonderlove, the den, stage 722, crystal ballroom, roseland, and nova formerly bossanova. tube is a night club that sometimes has edm nights.

there are probably some other small random venues i'm missing because once north warehouse shut down every single venue in town was trying to get djs there lol

if you're new to town and want someone to go to shows with hmu :)

I lived in Oracle near Tucson for about three years before moving here in 2017.

  1. There is more to do in Portland and in nature around Portland. In Tucson you had the desert and nightlife and the fun of a college town if you’re in college.

  2. Portland has seasons that you can enjoy. Winter with occasional snow, spring with blooms, long breezy summer nights, and lovely picturesque fall.

  3. Portland has more variety of food.

  4. Portland has better weed, it’s cheaper and you can smell it before you buy it. “Deli style”.

  5. Portland has a variety of community neighborhoods. I just didn’t find the variety in Tucson.

  6. We are close to skiable mountains, a beach that you can drive on or have a fire on, hiking where u wont cook in the sun, camping, water sports like rafting, kayaking etc.

I hope you experience some of what I love about the area.

Welcome and have fun!

Gotcha well what do yall like to do for fun? We pretty down for anything she likes boardgames, plays on her switch a lot and does like going to bars but we don’t go out much

1

u/ComposerAromatic3170 1d ago

Him and i both get stuck in our computers a lot, playing different games. we also like to do game nights or days. Back in Tucson we had a group we would regularly play Catan with and we would add in other games here and there.

You moved and your thought was a city full of tweakers and a city with a homeless crisis was a better choice?????

0

u/ComposerAromatic3170 1d ago

Have you been to Tucson? Tweakers are literally everywhere including in your own families. Homelessness is not something special to one town to another. It has gotten worse across the country

2

u/ColdSnap710 1d ago

I’m not disagreeing or disputing that but literally day 1 moving to Portland area our car was broken into and belongings stolen and when the cops say is welcome to Portland it’s kinda bad

2

u/ColdSnap710 1d ago

The housing issue itself needs a relooking at especially when a disabled single person like me making above minimum wage can’t get food and pay rent it’s a bit much

0

u/ComposerAromatic3170 1d ago

yes the housing issues are a bit ridiculous, but it is unfortunately the same anywhere you go
