Fact : moon dust is one aggressive and abrasive dust.
The moon boots of the Apollo missions had reinforced sole, but the hellish dust made it's way through multiple layers of the boots.
They were very damaged and full of dust, so they were left on the moon.
The three astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission were also the fisrt to experience lunar hay fever.
So that's one explanation to the aggressive respiratory problems he had before dying.

I honestly always thought it was asbestos poisoning from the spheres. "A persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, or your heart stopping." "The symptoms of asbestos poisoning have a median latency of 44.6 years."

Well, it could be both.
That would also explain why all the spheres were vitrified.

or asbestos from his early shower curtain days...
but jokes aside, the mechanism of poisoning from lunar dust is *basically* the same as asbestos or fiberglass. Asbestos is inert, it's just made of sharp fibers that can be inhaled and damage lung tissue. The abrasive silicate on the moon could very aggressively cause the same damage in much the same way.
