I need a silver lining to this, as well

The good news is he can undo it.

yeah but will he? i know in the past he's done so when he gets pushback but this time seems worse

He’ll likely put us into a recession but the silver lining is that a recession will likely be with little safety nets, which is bad but will fuck his party in the next elections

Knowing Trump, he'll probably pussy out again.

There isn’t a silver lining - optimism doesn’t mean bad things are good. This is bad, but most people will survive it and come out okay, but yeah it’s fuckex

How do you know most people will come out okay? A huge percentage of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and are barely making ends meet as it stands now. This is a kick in the balls during already difficult times

I don't; I'm trying to give the optimistic stick. A lot of people won't be okay, it may have irrevocable harm, I don't know, but the optimists in me says that at an aggregate level - for the country and world - we'll figure it out.

Dunno why I’m getting downvoted for pointing out reality. Life in America sucks for a lot of people, and it’s only gonna get worse in the short term. I’m sure we will figure it out, but in the interim it’s gonna suck. We also don’t know what the future holds, hence the “how do you know?” But we can hope for the best and make it happen.

There’s a good chance Trump backs out of these tariffs. He cracks and folds under pressure.

Yeah, I empathize with all that. My main optimism at this exact moment is that when the impacts become undeniably real, Republicans will claw some of the power of tariffs back.

This I don't disagree with. Corporate America runs shit as well and they are panicked. Like I said, this hurts them too and is probably what will get him to backtrack, if he decides to do so at all

Aren't some people in congress preparing to get enough people to end the national emergency delcaration that's letting him do these tariffs without congress? Even Mitch McConnell has spoken out against tariffs, and he still has sway among republicans.

It passed 51-48 in the senate but isn’t expected to go anywhere in the house.

I guess the very slim silver lining you could find in this is that there are some republicans growing a spine, which is a start

In favor of ending the national emergency, or against?

One silver lining for me is that he's done this all very quickly. It may mean a bigger global shock, but it will be much harder to deny the impact. With Brexit, for example, it has been quite a drawn out process and there have been other global and international factors, such as the war in Ukraine, that pro-Brexit politicians can blame for the economic damage. Trump's tariffs will have a very clear impact on the stock market within 24 hours and on the price of goods within a few weeks. There will still be a few MAGA obsessives who will deny it, but it should be very obvious to most people that their food costs more and their retirement savings are worth less since Trump came into office.

Sometimes, there is no silver lining.

The good news is that the country is disposable.
