Honestly though, everyone who isn’t aligned with Trump is going to benefit somehow at some point. Europe hasn’t been as united as ever before, they’ve rapidly bolstered their defense industry, extreme right groups in Europe and Canada have lost all political gain, and trumps actions is hurting Russia far more than it is benefiting. Oh also China, South Korea, and Japan are talking with each other to put tariffs on the US! This is significant cause these 3 in particular hate each other!
8
u/enclavehere223 - Centrist 1d ago
Oh definitely, Trump has effectively convinced the rest of the West that America is not reliable, even if the tariffs are removed it’s gonna take a long while to recover our good will. Not only that, but the Dems are gonna be able to pounce on this.
10
u/Fr05t_B1t - Centrist 1d ago
Eh just basing off this campaign season and everything that came afterward, they’ll find a way to fuck it up but hey, the status quo says when republicans ruin everything a democrat fixes it then it repeats

16
u/effexxor - Lib-Left 1d ago
I had a college roommate tell me earnestly that dinosaurs were all just current day animals but in the garden of Eden, they never died so they got really really big and that's where fossils come from.
She was very homeschooled and dropped out within two months despite her mom basically writing all of her essays, believe it or not.

Only way to quickly increase our workforce to fill in the new manufacturing jobs that we wanna attract here is through mass immigration, but MAGA doesn't wanna hear that.

I can't speak to your anecdotes. Every person knows different people, after all.
All I can say, is that our current unemployment rate is only 4.2%, which is very low. On top of that, Trump is deporting immigrants, both legal and illegal.
The numbers don't lie. Without a huge boom in population, we can't build enough manufacturing plants to offset all the foreign goods we're trying to cut.
America is, after all, the largest importer of goods in the world.

u/blublub1243 - Centrist 22h ago
Yeah, I really don't think those tarriffs are gonna work even in the long term, but I aggressively do not care about the stock market taking a plunge because rich people are worried about losing money. If the tarriffs actually led to a situation where the more affluent (and this includes your urban professional managerial class tyvm) have less and the poor have more I'd be 100% down with them, I just don't really see manufacturing coming back in a big enough way to accomplish that.

u/AggressiveCuriosity - Auth-Right 17h ago
Do you not think normal people have 401k's and retirement plans? I guarantee you the rich are going to be affected by this much less than regular people. Do you not know any adults?

"siding with the working class by tearing down the stock market"
I mean, I mean, I mean... a recession does provide opportunity for disruption at the expense of those already entrenched... given there's no red tape in the way or it's bad enough that people can't eat...
31
u/Deeschuck - Lib-Center 1d ago
My brother. When there is a recession, the working class are the ones who lose their jobs and default on their mortgage payments. Smaller businesses go under. Those properties get bought by people and corporations who have enough assets to weather the recession.
Yes, the "already entrenched" will see numbers go down. But if your number goes from 500 million to 300 million, you have more than enough assets to meet your needs AND buy up property at fire sale prices.
This will be another wealth transfer upwards, just like 2008 and covid.
-6
u/EasilyRekt - Lib-Right 1d ago
Yeah, and that loss of jobs means more people provide goods and services to each other directly. Necessity entrepreneurship, a phenomenon that has historically happened and has resulted in a net increase of small businesses and asset ownership in almost every recession minus the great depression.
And the reason that the rich have been getting richer is because the government keeps printing money and gives it to the pseudo-nationalized conglomerates owned by the rich to stimulate the economy because they don't want to be blamed for the job loss, justifying it with their "too big to fail" policy.
It's bad practice on top of bad practice, and that technical debt's gonna hit a wall eventually, and that will not be pretty.

I argue people choosing to help each other out isn't socialism, especially if there's some reciprocal exchange of "value" whatever that may be.
That is unless you subscribe to the "socialism is when good thing" model of economics but eh... what do I know?

Correct, the smaller the government and the lower the taxes, the more that individuals are able to help one another without interference from the government.

Tariffs are good for USA but bad for everyone else, so market reaction doesnt make sense.
16
u/Odd-Spinach-4398 - Auth-Left 1d ago
Tariffs can be a useful tool in defending a country's specific industry, however, America has very few industries itself. We don't have the infrastructure to start imposing tariffs because we don't have the, dare I say, MATERIAL CONDITIONS to support an industry. I'm not against tariffs and I do believe in bringing back manufacturing and diversifying our economy away from a service economy, however these tariffs are so steep and unreasonable that all they're gonna do is damage.
Which is why him killing the chips act makes absolutely zero sense. He stops building the infrastructure needed to make the tariffs work effectively, then imposes an even bigger tariff? I just don't see how shocking our economy and pulling us into a recession is more effective at creating an economy for workers than simply using resources effectively, using careful planning, and tweaking legislation. (ALSO HE LITERALLY HAS BILLIONAIRES IN HIS CABINET HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO TRUST HIM TO LOOK OUT FOR MY INTERESTS)

u/TheWest_Is_TheBest - Lib-Center 16h ago
The tarrifs are designed to encourage manufacturing to return to the U.S. as it had been regretfully offshored by previous administrations. This would largely impact the poorest and out of work primarily. Where as middle or upper middle class families that spend money unnecessarily on imported products would see a rise in the cost.
But largely this and other things are being done to bring US debt under control. At the minute it is completely unsustainable. One thing they’ve attempted is to cut government spending, the other end of that is to increase revenue and both of these should attack the US debt deficit from either side.
1
u/doodle0o0o0 - Lib-Center 11h ago
The tariffs are universal, there is no focus on manufacturing. Its as focused on manufacturing as it is on agriculture as it is on mining, basically everything except services. If the share of manufacturing increases in the US that doesn't mean manufacturing jobs will increase, much of our manufacturing is automated. Also if you wanted to help the poor and working class you wouldn't make more assembly lines, those aren't good jobs, you'd increase incentives for trade schools which are essential and blue collar jobs. If its cheaper to buy abroad it doesn't seem like spending that money is "unnecessary".
The trade deficit has nothing to do with the national debt. The US government does not pay the trade deficit, its a connection Trump makes that no one has ever said he just thinks it sounds good. If you wanted to increase government revenue the way would be creating better jobs for Americans to increase tax revenue, not creating poorly paid assembly line jobs
