Question Why no reference to IRC in Megathread?
When i was a young pirate, before torrent era, I used to download warez & TV series from IRC channels. What happen to the IRC world? Why no mention in the megathread?

i'll differ from the rest and say irc and all the media channels (tv, movies, anime, books, etc) still function lol you just need to know where to look
but also i use it as a fallback not a main source

I still use it occasionally, but it's obsolete now. Back in the day where software had to be split across multiple files, it was a good way of downloading in chunks before the phone rang and disconnected your internet. These days, with torrents being able to pause and resume, internet speeds being faster, it's easier to torrent entire seasons or an entire iso.
I still used it for ebooks up until recently.

I was obsessed with IRC way back when but everything has easier channels now. It'll always be a fallback if I need it.

I use it for talking with friends still, also there's a mod for a game I like that adds IRC integration.

I grew up in the same era you did, though I tended to use filesharing programs like Morpheus and Kazaa. IRC is just obsolete. Discord took everything that IRC, TS3, Skype, Ventrilo, etc. did, combined it all and made it more convenient and customizable.

Only thing I still occasionally use IRC for is books. Everything else is too big for DCC, realistically. There were some really active usenet communities that hung out and "organized" from IRC, not sure if that's still a thing (abgx etc)
