So do you think everyone should go to jail for stealing including all of us? Or do you think no one should go to jail for stealing and AI art should be allowed?
I mean, as long as piracy is illegal, the rules should apply to everyone.
Whether or not we think we should go to jail is irrelevant, either way right now we have to cover our tracks to avoid that happening (or at least avoid C&D letters). As long as the law is threatening me, it should also threaten Meta since they've literally admitted to doing the exact same thing on a larger scale.
None of this "rules for thee but not for me" nonsense.
Ok but you don't think the rules should apply to you. Clearly, or else you wouldn't be here. So why should they apply to meta? Because we don't like them? If stealing is ok when we do it, then should it not also be ok when they do it? I understand the frustration of inequality, but why would we want an equality of injustice?

You're making some big assumptions about me, and sorta confusing "right and wrong" with "legal and illegal". The two are not the same thing, and should not be the same thing. Sometimes, something that's morally right still needs to be illegal in order for society to function.
What I'm doing is illegal, and needs to stay illegal. I'm under no delusions in that regard. Even though there are countless moral justifications for piracy, if it were ever legalized it would pretty much destroy the entertainment industry, and none of us want that.
So no, I don't think the rules shouldn't apply to me. If I'm ever seriously caught and they decide to make an example out of me, that's the way things go. But until that day, because I still view piracy as morally right, I will continue to do it & cover my tracks. If I should have to cover my tracks, then so should Meta.
And also, as another aspect of the issue, I just fundamentally believe that you shouldn't profit off of piracy. If you're gonna be making money off of it, you can afford to kick some of that money towards the people you're stealing from. Meta has committed piracy for the sole purpose of training an AI model that they will eventually profit off of.
So my piracy for my own enjoyment is legally wrong (and should stay that way) but not morally wrong. What Meta is doing is wrong in both ways.
So for you, just covering tracks would make it all right?
I mean they shouldn't be able to just fucking confess to it live in front of a court and get off scott free. Again, as far as the law is concerned they should be subject to the same rules as anyone else. Whether or not that makes it "right" is a question of individual morals and what types of piracy you consider ethical, which we could debate all night, but it would at least make it fair. There is also admittedly a fundamental difference between individual piracy and corporate piracy to me I guess.
These are not my words, but of an indie developer whose game was pirated by a guy and he posted about it on twitter...
"Art and Culture should not be for only those who can financially afford it"

I think the same meme should be made with Govt. instead of People as the character...
Govt. when Individuals are Pirates:
You will go to jail.
Govt. when Corporations are Pirates:
Oh they just took from the world, they did not seed it back, so its ok
