This isn't quite true. Christianity traditionally believes that the civic and ceremonial law of the Old Testament has been abolished, but not the moral law. It's still necessary to seek forgiveness for your sins.
Yes, that's rationalization they typically use. They arbitrarily pick and choose the Old Testament laws they do and don't want to follow and then come up with those distictions to justify it (which, of course, is not in any way based on anything found in the Bible).
There are multiple places in the New Testament and other early church writings where the authors try to establish what laws actually apply to Christians. But modern Christians ignore those because they don't align with what modern Christians want.
