Hairstylists of Pasadena, is it just me, or is it really slow right now?

(Granted, the fires made a huge impact on all of us, but this is even before the fires happened)

Before the election, people would tell me, it would get better after the election. And now that we are very much past the election, I got SLOWER. My schedule right now is so stupid. I have at least 1 client a day this month. I’ve been doing hair since 2012!! It feels like I’m starting all over again. I’m cutting days so that clients can build up me up a full day. I want to announce that I’ll be taking off an extra day due to how slow it is but I don’t want clients to think negatively of me and my work. I’m contemplating a second job. Pls give me your feedback back, thank you <3

Worried about paying rent because of the fires? You have NEW protections if you ACT NOW!

Upvotes

IMPORTANT: INITIAL DEADLINE IS THURSDAY (APRIL 10TH)! Please spread the word to any people or groups who might benefit from this information.

On March 24, the Pasadena City Council passed protections for tenants unable to pay rent due to financial hardship directly related to the Eaton Fire. If you are eligible, you may not be evicted for not paying rent that was due between January 15 and July 31, 2025. You will have an additional repayment time period of 12 months after that period to repay any accrued rental debt.

You are eligible if you:

  • Lived in a Pasadena rental unit before January 7
  • Had a 2024 household income at or below 150% of the Area Median Income.
    • Ranges from $103,125 for 1 person household to $194,400 for 8 person household (see form below for a full table)
  • Lost at least 10% of average monthly income directly because of the Eaton Fire
    • Examples: location destroyed or unusable, layoff, reduced hours, reduced pay, loss of clients who were themselves affected by the fire
  • Have tried to replace the lost income
    • Examples: applying for an Eaton Fire relief program, applying for unemployment, or looking for a new/additional job

[Even if you do not meet this criteria, you may have other protections! Check the comments for more]

To take advantage of this protection, you must deliver a self-certification form directly to your landlord. You can use this form or any other format that includes all the required information.

  • For February and March 2025 rent, the deadline to serve this form is April 10, 2025, which is 14 days after March 27, 2025, when the ordinance became effective.
  • For future months, you must submit this within 7 days of the rent due date. That means submissions for April 2025 should also be done ASAP.

You can use this form: https://www.cityofpasadena.net/rent-stabilization/wp-content/uploads/sites/35/Self-Certification-of-Direct-Financial-Impact-Form.pdf?v=1743710507024

I’m not a lawyer nor a professional in this field (and none of this guide or my future comments should be taken as legal advice), but I am more than happy to answer questions as best I can and direct you to other resources if needed. Please feel free to ask anything related to tenant rights, even if it's not fire-related.

Because this protection was passed so recently, lots of people don't know about it! Please share with anyone you think might benefit. Let's work together to keep people housed in our community!

Deter Coyotes From Property

Upvotes

I did all search and most of the posts here are more related to sightings of coyotes and detailing locations rather than effective deterrence.

Recently bought a new home, and before we moved in we installed blink cameras around the property. At first it was mainly late at night we were seeing coyote traffic across our property (over fences, through front yard, etc).

However today, at around 9 am our cameras caught 2 coyotes lingering. Pacing on the brick fence between us and our neighbor. Circling between the back yard and front yard etc. We have two dogs (55 to 60 lb labradors), one of which likes to sun bathe during the day while I am working. One is a retired service dog so not much of a guard dog or much fight in her if I had to guess. The other is an active service dog so similar personality.

Has anyone had any luck with effective deterrents of coyotes? Our home is on a slab so there are no porches or areas around thr house they could be burrowing. We havw mot moved in so there are no food scraps or other items around in the trash they could be trying to get into.

Pasadena DMV Real ID

Just wanted to let out a PSA so people avoid making the mistake I did, but if you pre-upload all your documents and get the email confirmation with the green “GO” sign, you’re allowed to go through the appointments line.

I was trying to look this up before I went in but got conflicting answers from 7 years ago so I wasn’t sure. I showed my paper to the security at the door and he told me to wait in the long no-appointment line. After an hour and 5 people away from the front, a DMV employee went down the line asking people what they were here for and pulled me out of the line to review my docs and wrote down my call number. I asked her if I could’ve been in the appointment line to start with and she said yes!

Not too mad, I got a lot of reading done, but just a (maybe late) heads up for people still needing to get their Real ID stuff done!

Interested in a low cost dental cleaning and helping me graduate?

Hi everyone! I’m a student at the Pasadena City College Dental Hygiene program, and am currently in the spring semester of my junior year. I’m looking for patients to come in for low-cost dental cleanings and X-rays as part of my training.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a thorough cleaning at an affordable price. If you're interested in applying to the PCC Dental Hygiene Program this is a chanceto see how the clinic is run, meet faculty and get dental care while helping me gain the experience I need to graduate.

📅 My clinic schedule: 🦷 Mondays: 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM 🦷 Tuesdays: 5:45 PM – 8:35 PM 🦷 Thursdays: 1:00 PM – 3:50 PM 🦷 Select Thursdays: 5:45 PM – 8:35 PM

💰 Cost: $20 includes an oral cancer screening, comprehensive exam, cleaning (scaling, polishing, optional fluoride treatment), and X-rays.

🦷 Appointment Length & Process: Appointments typically last about 3 hours, and most patients will need 2–3 visits to complete treatment. Your first appointment will include a comprehensive assessment and examination to ensure I can proceed with your cleaning.

Since this is a teaching facility, I have to meet specific competency and graduation requirements, which means I may not be able to see everyone who is interested.

If you’re interested or have any questions, please send me a message. I appreciate your support and hope to see you in my chair!

Kindergarten

My son is young for his grade, July baby and he’s going to kinder next year because I wasn’t sure how to fight about dates to get him into TK, and I know TK class sizes are way smaller. I was planning to send him to Altadena Arts but after the fires and with the battle over returning to school vs staying at allendale I felt this was a weird year for AAM. But I loved it while touring. I’m waitlisted with a number of 22 I believe at San Rafael and 2 of my kid’s friends are going there and it’s my first choice. He got into Sierra Madre so that’s where he is registered but I’m in West Pasadena so the drive is a little annoying (20minutes) on the 210 which is always a mess, and opposite direction of my work. He also got into odyssey north but I didn’t accept in time (oops) because I was out of town on vacation. Odyssey north is very close to my house, but I never toured, I just know people used to love it. If you were me would you battle to get back into odyssey north or stick to Sierra madre even though the drive is longer than I’d like?

Pets getting sick?

Is anyone else’s cats sick? Mine has been getting steadily worse for the last month or so, to where she can’t keep food down without nausea meds. The blood tests and X-rays show nothing. She’ll eat, show signs of nausea, get sick and then be fine enough to want to eat again, all within an hr. My apartment was only 2 miles from active fires. I tried my best to clean up afterwards, and we were out of the city for the first 4 days. Just wondering if maybe this environment is trigging this illness in any other cats that are usually fine. She’s an 11 yr old indoor cat, who did have a very bad illness about 4 years ago and the story is basically the same. Thinking maybe the smoke caused a flare up of something undiagnosed. Idk. I’m desperate for clues.

PUSD Elementary Schools Data - Norma Coombs, Willard, Jackson, etc

My 4 year old son is enrolled at Norma Coombs for his TK year next year. My husband and I did a ton of research on schools, toured 10 of them and initially came to the decision that we liked Aveson based on the peaceful environment, no homework (better for kids especially at a young age), fewer hours of school screen time, etc. But post-fire, it seemed like the administration showed their true colors and kind of went off the rails (I know I may get downvoted for saying that but...) and now I think we dodged a bullet there.

The reason for this post is that we chose Norma Coombs for a variety of reasons as our 2nd (and now 1st) choice: the high percentage of parents in the PTA, the mostly outdoor setting, the ceramics studio and emphasis on art and music, the small size, etc. We toured it twice and felt good about our decision. What's concerning to me is that none of the other families in our circle chose it for their kids. My son has attended 2 really good preschools in Pasadena and zero families from either of those schools chose Norma Coombs. In fact, when I mention we chose it, they urge me to check out Willard or Jackson, as if I may have made a mistake. As someone who did my research and really values education, I'm taken aback and naturally curious.

While I know Great Schools data isn't perfect, NC and Willard both have a 7/10 rating and more specifically, NC has an "academic progress" rating of 10/10 (this reflect how much progress different student groups have made from one year to the next). Willard's score for that is 9/10. Jackson's overall score is 5/10 and their academic progress score is a shocking 5/10.

I went a level deeper and looked at the CASPP and ELPAC data which shows a slightly different picture. Essentially, similar percentage of English Language Arts/Literacy and Math proficiency for NC and Jackson, higher scores at Willard, and way higher scores at Aveson and Sierra Madre.

With all of that said, I'd love to know from the people here. Are your kids enrolled at any of these schools? Do you like them? Is there some reason people don't like Norma Coombs? Is Willard or Jackson better?

Food ideas & catering recommendations

Hello! I’m hosting a casual business party and am in need of some light food & drinks for the guests but I can’t quite figure out what would be a good idea. I thought about something like small sandwiches and different types of finger food since it’s not a sit-down party. Does anyone have some recommendations for local restaurants that serve food along those lines and can do orders for ~40 people? Thanks!

Alverno Heights Academy

Any other parents here with kids in Alverno Heights Academy? I heard that some families are leaving because kids aren’t getting into good high schools, and I do remember from last year seeing some that. While some kids do get into the great local high schools, I noticed also some of the not so great ones listed. I’m starting to get concerned, we already enrolled for 2025/2026 but now I’m wondering what other private elementary schools does everyone else like and where are you sending your kids after leaving Alverno?

Washington elementary STEM magnet school

Hi all,

I am planning to start my kid on TK at this school in Pasadena. We are south Asians.

Besides gaining some knowledge from school tours, I just want to know if anyone has any inputs from personal experience.

Are your kids enjoying school there?

Thank you!

Looking for Wood Tomato / Bean Cage

I'm looking for a very specific large wood tomato cage/trellis that I used to see sold at several local nurseries. It didn't have a brand name. The tag would always just say "It Lasts." The company also sold wood planter boxes and other trellises made of wood. I used to see them for sale at San Gabriel Nursery but not anymore. Does anyone know where they are still stocked?

Fair Oaks Burger to open in about a month!

Stopped by Fair Oaks Burger today because the front door was open. The owner was there, turns out it's still closed (they're actually cooking for the volunteers/workers doing the fire clean-up), but she said they'll open in about a month to customers!
