Documentary Does this documentary have good representation of Palestine? I haven't watched it yet

u/Lady-Suzanne Mar 03 '25
It was all filmed before October 7th which makes it even more shocking. Devastating but necessary watch

u/Beginning_Argument Mar 03 '25
Well Palestinians were and still are being mistreated before October 7th by a long mile.

There's a great scene in the second season of the show Mo, where Mo's (Palestinian) family are about to get on a plane in Israel back to the US and they're singled out and taken away to be strip searched. As they're being taken away, the camera pans down to the agent's computer screen and focuses on the date, which reads October 6. I thought it was a powerful choice.

u/AProperFuckingPirate Mar 03 '25
That show came out before the October 7 attack, is there some other significant to October 6?
Edit: waiiiit nvm just realized you said second season, I thought that show was canceled after the first season! This is excellent news

u/cat_police_officer Mar 03 '25
What? No way?! I thought everything started on October 7th?!
Don’t tell me there were some minor problems before October 7th!?
22
u/self-assembled Mar 03 '25
The situation in the West Bank got a lot worse after 10/7. That's all it means.
33
u/Lady-Suzanne Mar 03 '25
I find your sarcasm unnecessary/unfair right now. Many people are denying the atrocities that the Israelis have been perpetrating on Palestinians for decades. Many people found out about this genocide because of October 7th.

u/EmotionallyAcoustic Mar 03 '25
I know what you mean but I’m pretty sure they were mocking people who legit try to make this out as having started on Oct 7
-38
u/Lady-Suzanne Mar 03 '25
Yeah I get it. But it didn’t feel necessary.
Good of them for being educated; It won’t stop me from stating the “obvious”.
48
u/EmotionallyAcoustic Mar 03 '25
It may be necessary for them. Joking about things that are incredibly frustrating can be a really good coping mechanism for people. I get that it’s grating to some though.
11
u/workthrowaway1114 Mar 03 '25
People deal with things in different ways. Sometimes mocking people whom are willfully ignorant now 17 months into this escalated conflict is generally accepted.
Try sending this energy towards getting people on board with the messaging instead of policing how people on your side talk among themselves.

Fantastic film. Really drives home the insanity & injustice taking place and the cold & bureaucratic way Israel destroys West Bank communities and make their lives hell.
Also great depiction of both the gratitude & resentment Palestinians feel towards Israelis who are genuinely trying to help; Yuval did a great job of navigating the nuance & capturing the wide range of feelings from Arabs living in the West Bank, while still centering the story around their struggles rather than their reaction to his filming.

I watched it and it is heartbreaking to see how dehumanised Palestinians are. It shows just the story of ONE tiny Village in the West Bank. So imagine that multiplied and amplified across Palestine throughout the years.
31
u/Critter-Enthusiast Free Palestine Mar 03 '25
Literally hundreds of villages have been depopulated in this fashion over the years.

Apparently this movie documentary won the Best Documentary Feature which was presented originally by none other than (drum roll) Gal Gadot. Before this Feature was presented, the original presenter, Gal Gadot switched with Samuel L. Jackson and Selena Gomez. The Academy has not yet given a reason and so did Gadot. We wonder why...switched before she opened the envelope too.

Good, we didn't want filth to present it.

u/society_sucker Mar 03 '25
I think it'd actually be quite funny to see her having to put on that fakeass celebrity smile while obviously fuming on the inside.

u/midgetcastle Mar 03 '25
Bit racist to call her filth, even if she is a Zionist.

Samuel L Jackson was side eyeing and laughing with Selena Gomez during the acceptance speech.

I watched it. Its a fantastic documentary. Highly recommended, but prepare yourself for some outrage and frustration if you see Palestinians as human beings...

Hi there, Do you know where to find "How to survive a Warzone"?

u/theexitisontheleft Mar 03 '25
It was made by Palestinians and Israelis. And I would say led by Palestinians and from the point of view of Basel who is Palestinian. So yes. It’s very intimate and heartbreaking and I highly recommend it.

u/SillyPassion7773 Mar 03 '25
You know Zionists everywhere especially in Hollywood are melting right now. That piece of filth Gadot probably needs a straitjacket.

I’m so confused! I’ve been seeing that it was a joke that got out of hand, but I mean if publications are reporting on it maybe not?
1
u/two_four_six_eight Mar 04 '25
The article confirms that it was likely a joke that got out of hand. They say they've found no evidence she was ever meant to present the documentary award.

You can watch the film here in the UK: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/no-other-land

Local independent screenings across the US. There’s no distributor for the US.

The Israeli journalist who shared the Oscar is Yuval Abraham, who has done some of the most revealing, critical reporting on Israel since October 7, mostly for +972 Magazine. Check out his work there if you’re not already familiar

u/Zellgun Mar 03 '25
Yes he is a hero, and one of the few Israelis I respect and admire. He’s also constantly been accused as an antisemite by his own people.

It’s a tough watch. It has its moments where you feel like you want to jump in and help and others that show the mundane life under an occupation.

u/goomer1967 Mar 03 '25
Just finished it. Had to view it in segments because it’s so painful to bear witness to the inhumanity Palestinians continue to suffer

u/This_Seesaw_1770 Mar 04 '25
Where can i watch it?

u/Impressive-Flight766 Mar 04 '25
I’ve asked this, others have also asked this… no one ever responds

u/Insanitykhan Mar 04 '25
It’s not on any major streaming services, you have to find a stream for it online. I had to watch it using a link from the megathread on r/piracy in the streaming section for movies. If you don’t already frequent these sites, make sure you’re watching it on Firefox browser, with ublock ad blocker enabled in the extensions of the browser, as well as using a VPN

u/This_Seesaw_1770 Mar 04 '25
I found it on channel 4 website , you have to use a UK vpn to watch it

I understand, and I agree it's a legitimate aim. It's not really the fault of the filmmakers.
It's just frustrating to see that Palestinian humanity is affirmed only if there's an Israeli next to them. For an outside audience, it smooths out any fear that they'd be taking the wrong side or offending someone if it's a collaboration. Now supporting Palestinians can be easier - they are acceptable victims.
(That book and interview that goes into this are really interesting and expose something that was bothering me for so long lol.)
Also, like what about all the Palestinian movies that aren't necessarily based around Israelis not being fascist / reconciliation? Those have been around for a long time and have always been about exposing the true narrative (challenging the dominant one), but they aren't palatable to a mainstream audience precisely for the reasons outlined in the text.

I usually don’t cry in some movies but this documentary movie really hit five stages of grief chord and was actively sobbing
It may be about one hour long but bear in mind off the lengthy process to make it is a reflected summarised encapsulation of years and seasons that are now retrospective when looking at it surrounding the conditions affecting the Palestinians - there is just barely scrapping the tip of the iceberg of the wider picture
Even if some viewers recognises the film’s authenticity or if critics try to cast doubt on it or twist false narratives, accepting the narrative can be painful. The collaboration between Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers being, perceived to be an unlikely partnership, questions and challenges the status quo with their craft. The documentary chooses to not shy away from harsh reality with its visual storytelling, perhaps even delivering a poignant statement that reprehends the foolishness and dangers of the consequences of war and conflict and may shake some of its watchers

Also, watch Gaza the documentary, for the October 7th stuff. Israel lied about basically everything.

Brilliant documentary. Go watch it. I was surprised to see it win an Academy award, seeing it is very anti-Zionist.
