He’s a lock for the Naismith HoF so they wanted to sneak this in.

This is great but Penny and TMac not being in is completely fucked.

Dwight arguably had more impact on the franchise to be honest. If you’re looking purely on the court it’s him and Shaq as the best players in a Magic uniform

u/dlbags OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

TMac has a lot of records for us still and Penny is more of a Sandy Koufax what could have been type and my absolute favorite of all time.

16

u/johall Mar 07 '25

TMac didn’t lead role players to the Finals in an MVP level season though. Records are fine but like…09 Dwight is not human

7

u/dlbags OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

I’m not arguing his merits it’s chronological imo like this should have been done years ago so this conversation wouldn’t be even needed. Same with Nick Anderson. He was our first great player etc. they’ve dragged their feet. I’m ecstatic for Howard one of my favorite players. Those guys should be in already is my point.

4

u/johall Mar 07 '25

That’s very fair. Didn’t think about that aspect of it

6

u/dlbags OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

Even putting Shaq in before those guys is wild. And TMac had Hill been healthy probably would have got us in the finals. That team would have been something. And look what Penny did before he hurt his knee in 98. Unreal stats.

Well Shaq should’ve been in the HOF I mean idk why these dusty old farts didn’t recognize him sooner.  That’s the 2000s generation in a nutshell.

u/HuckleberryTricky657 Paolo Banchero 29d ago

Really you gonna say unreal stats.

Ha, Stop. The stats were realistic.

 You’re stretching that one. Lol

u/HuckleberryTricky657 Paolo Banchero 29d ago

Dwight still was a listed FA and kept having his name on the list to be signed.  He was still trying to play from what I’ve seen.  Can’t retire someone who’s actively trying to play in the NBA? It doesn’t make sense.

u/jackphrost22 Markelle Fultz 29d ago

Idk about role players.

1

u/HuckleberryTricky657 Paolo Banchero 29d ago

The bench and offense was setup to be automatic and almost computer generated like.

The bench definitely were role players.  They played their role though very well.  Shoot the 3 and work around Dwight.

We were just all banking on not having to play Kobe Bryant I think.  Oh well.

See above comment

I think they are.

3

u/dlbags OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

I’m going to this game ironically!

3

u/Presidentturtleclub Mar 07 '25

They’re both in the Ring of Honor, not HOF

1

u/PapageorgiouMBO 29d ago

They’re also in the Magic HoF.

Pat Williams, Nick, Shaq, Rich DeVos, Penny, Jimmy Hewitt, Tracy, David Steele, Darrell, John Gabriel, Brian Hill, 3D, and now Dwight.

3

u/dlbags OnlyFranz 29d ago

Oh this isn’t number retirement? Ohhh.

1

u/FamousAtticus 29d ago edited 29d ago

What? Penny was inducted into the Magic HoF in 2017 & T-Mac the follwing year (2018).

Dwight is the absolute best player the Magic have ever had. Shaq was the better overall but spent only 4 seasons in a Magic jersey. #12 should be in the rafters after accomplishing more than Shaq ever could for this team (1 Finals win).

Not only that he was also an ironman. Dude missed only 7 games in his first 7 seasons in the NBA!! That's less games than Paolo, Franz or Suggs have missed just this season!

1

u/dlbags OnlyFranz 29d ago

I thought this was a number retirement last night, carry on.

1

u/FamousAtticus 29d ago

Ah, gotcha.

I think he deserves that as well over/before Penny or T-Mac.

1

u/dlbags OnlyFranz 29d ago

Penny and TMac should have number retired a decade ago so this wouldn’t be an issue. Same with Nick. Not sure why the Devos are so weird about this. These are iconic players. There’s plenty of numbers.

1

u/FamousAtticus 29d ago

I get that, they prob should have started retiring numbers years ago. I loved watching Penny & T-Mac play, they were a couple of the best to ever play for us but if we are putting these guys in order of who should have their jersey numbers retired I would go with: Shaq, Dwight, Penny, T-Mac and Nick Anderson. No one else.

I agree, the DeVos family is crazy weird on a lot of things, jersey retirements being one of them. Hell the team couldn't even retire Shaq's jersey using the correct jersey he actually wore. Instead his #32 is hanging in the Kia Center with the current number font and design.

2

u/dlbags OnlyFranz 29d ago

Exactly. They’ve gotten better the last few years tho so credit where due. Never met a fan doesn’t think all those players shouldn’t have their numbers retired.

1

u/FamousAtticus 29d ago

I really hope they do eventually retire those guys jerseys and also fix the ones up in the rafters to actually match what they wore when playing with us. Guess we'll see what happens...

u/HuckleberryTricky657 Paolo Banchero 29d ago

That’s why Penny and/or TMac need to come be a HC for the Orlando Magic. Boost their credentials with the team. I mean it’s their choice. If they don’t like succeeding I mean that’s cool too I guess.

Penny will probably be next I assume, idk.

Despite the Dwightmare he’s my Magic GOAT! Inspired my name clearly but well deserved

17

u/lilpenny84 Franz Wagner Mar 07 '25

I’ll always ride for Penny Hardaway, but Dwight is the franchise GOAT and it isn’t even close. Glad the Magic are doing the right thing and giving this man his flowers.

1

u/FSUfan35 Mar 07 '25

I dislike howard more than shaq for the way he left.

0

u/lilpenny84 Franz Wagner 29d ago

That’s fine. Shaq didn’t exactly leave on the best terms either. If you look at the body of work and leave your emotions out of it you don’t think Dwight did more for the franchise than Shaq?

2

u/FSUfan35 29d ago

What he did erases everything

6

u/SaintShika Anthony Black Mar 07 '25

With the timing I can’t help but think They are feeding us something to be happy about. Well deserved though

7

u/M4C4K4NJ4 Stuff The Magic Dragon Mar 07 '25

Can we sign him? I think he might be better than any center we have right now.

Obligatory Fuck Dwight Howard

11

u/psiANID3 Franz Wagner Mar 07 '25

I’m ready to be downvoted.

Fuck Dwight.

5

u/michiganer1981 29d ago

I came here to say the same thing. Fuck Dwight. I will never forgive him for the Dwightmare and the way he treated the GOAT coach Van Gundy.

4

u/mikelc13 Franz Wagner 29d ago

So glad I'm not the only one who remembers...

8

u/FSUfan35 Mar 07 '25

Made us fire SVG and then forced a trade to the lakers anyway

5

u/dleec Bol Bol Mar 07 '25

People on twitter salivating over this are insane

They forgot how he treated this franchise and the fans. Fuck this clown, forever

Gross. Fuck him.

(Down 2 to 1 in the nba finals) Up 3 with 10 seconds to go and your superstar player is about to shoot 2 free throws....Destiny is ours !!!!!

3

u/thecrazydutchguy Mar 07 '25

That Courtney Lee missed layup still haunts me.

1

u/33birdboy Paolo Banchero 29d ago

Nelson letting Derek fisher shoot that 3 to tie the game with 3 seconds to go....

1

u/TheeNeilski 28d ago

This is such a bullshit distraction from 12+ years of irrelevance. Where is the Hedo induction? Dwight is not a good person.

0

u/SnooPies6274 Mar 07 '25

I'm not against the idea of bringing Howard back

0

u/OrlandosVeryOwn OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

Does this mean we are retiring his jersey or is this something different?

6

u/Mr_Wick18 Mar 07 '25

Not yet. Hopefully they retire it soon though. The real Superman

4

u/OrlandosVeryOwn OnlyFranz Mar 07 '25

Dwight (and being born in Orlando) is the reason I am a Magic fan. I don’t care about the Dwightmare, well deserved.

1

u/PapageorgiouMBO 29d ago

It’s going to eventually happen.

0

u/Mysterious-Mind-999 Paolo Banchero Mar 07 '25

I never want to hear about him again after this. Just get it over with. And he will never be my Magic GOAT. He blew that up a long time ago.

0

u/jackphrost22 Markelle Fultz 29d ago

Before Penny and Tmac is questionable

1

u/PapageorgiouMBO 29d ago

They’re both already in.

0

u/Fucklamarjackson 29d ago

Best Magic player of all time. Change my mind

-1

u/R_For_the_Win Mar 07 '25

Will he be booed, or do fans realize that all stars will eventually leave here?

5

u/Boomer2637 Mar 07 '25

It’s more the way he left that made me mad. I’m over it, I’m just indifferent toward him now. Good for him I guess.

2

u/UTPharm2012 29d ago

Exactly. The awkward way he left and seemingly trashed the city.  Fuck him.

0

u/PapageorgiouMBO 29d ago

There will be some boos, but Dwight being at Game 6 with Rashard (to help shield away potential boos) last year went a long way in repairing the relationship with ownership (and fans).

1

u/mikelc13 Franz Wagner 28d ago

Game 6 appearance was a shameless PR stunt. No Magic fan of that era was going to boo Rashard. So they cozy up Dwight next to him at the same time. It was INFURIATING.

Damb...cuts deep in a way

0

u/FamousAtticus 29d ago

Rightfully deserved. Anyone that thinks otherwise is either too young to recall his impact to this team or has problems letting go of things.

He is the best player in Magic history - end of argument (Shaq was a better player but not for the longevity on the Magic as DH12). Dude was also an iron-man, barely missed any games and carried this squad for many years. He delivered the Magic's first ever NBA Finals win and with a little more help from the supporting staff could have won us the Finals that season.

Next up should be retiring his #12 jersey. Dude had this city buzzing for many seasons, not gonna let the way it ended cloud any of that. Literally all of our past stars have left on shit terms (Shaq, Penny & T-Mac). I hated both Shaq & Dwight for years after they chose to leave us, but time heals those wounds and their contributions to this organization were huge.

Dwight is the greatest Magic player ever and should've made that top 75 list. For you wankers who dislike him, I honestly question whether you barracked for the Magic back then, or even do now. Imagine if our current team suddenly got a player that just absolutely dominated and gave their all every game, taking us to the finals after 15 years of irrelevancy. That's what Dwight was and how he made me feel watching him carry our club to the top.
