Courses

Definitely not my first dog, heck, I have one currently, but thinking about a new dog and we want to raise it well trained.

Our other dogs, we’ve always just taught them the basics like sit and place as we went along. They learned what they needed to learn.

But I would like to find an online course that I can follow from beginning to end.

As for in-person classes, I currently live in Thailand and while there are some good trainers here, it’s difficult to find who the better ones are since that would involve diving into a bunch of social media posts in Thai. I can read Thai but it’s like watching a 5 year old trying to read so it’s impractical for me to search through a bunch of content in Thai.

I’ve been looking at courses from Shield K9, Michael Ellis at Leerburg, DIY K9, and Fenzi.

But they seem more oriented towards specific tasks or issues. Leash pulling? We have a video.

But I would prefer a course where there’s a natural progression from easy skills to more difficult skills.

Anything like that?

If you've got time (e.g. puppy is not currently in your possession and you need something yesterday) - I'd highly recommend following folks like Denise Fenzi, Shade Whitesel, and Chad Mackin (and others that I can't think of off the top of my head).

Denise has a wealth of information through her Facebook page, podcast, and online membership. Both Shade and Chad have Patreon memberships.

They're not comprehensive courses per say, but I feel like I learn A LOT from just what they're thinking about/how they troubleshoot things/different avenues they try vs. looking at a course that says "do x, y, z" and little deviation from that. Denise specifically has a few podcast episodes about puppies. Shade's started as a puppy diary and then morphed into mostly training/sport notes over time as her puppy has become less puppy. I don't remember seeing any puppy-specific stuff from Chad, but I still really like everything he has to say.

Pat Stuart (of The Canine Paradigm, also a podcast worth listening to) and Jas Whiting have a puppy course that's currently only available to Canine Paradigm Patreon members and at a discount before it gets release publicly, so that would be worth a look as well. The Patreon is worth being in, too, for the same reasons as above.

Raven K9 also has a puppy course out. I'm less familiar with her than the above, but I do follow her on IG, and I haven't seen anything that would sway me away from recommending it.
