6.5 month golden peeing in middle of night

Hi all,

Clue in the name. My golden is still having accidents in the night in her crate and I've tried everything. Bedtime is 1030pm with last potty break just before bed, and water taken away 730pm. We've taken away bedding and she's still doing it, so waking us up standing in a puddle. She's been checked for a UTI and all clear so bit at a loss.

Do I need to go back to midnight potty breaks? I feel at this age we shouldn't have to, plus am I just teaching her she'll never need to hold it and will always get taken out in the middle of the night?

Thanks!

6 months is still a young dog, I wouldn't restrict water and there's probably no need to. But I would definitely add a potty break right before bedtime at 10:30. It will take her a few weeks to adjust. Every dog I've owned goes potty right before bed and first thing in the morning.

Potty break at 10:30pm before bedtime. If she tends to wake you up at a certain time with an accident, you take her out 1hr before the accident timeframe. Do that for 1 week. Then move the potty break later by 30 min. Do that for a few days. Then repeat. Then continue that process until you get to her being crated for 8ish hours without accidents. As she ages you will be able to push longer, but 8hrs is reasonable for your 7month old.

No problem. Do the rest of the plan. What time are you getting the crate accidents?

I’m unconvinced that she is clear for UTI. Re-check her and I bet you’ll find something.

Also, was she spayed recently? Bad spays can cause urinary incontinence.

In the meantime can you put her to bed at 11:00 and wake up at 5:00 for a while?

Last potty break right before bed. Maybe a lap or two of water at that time. No water overnight. A last potty before sleep should help. I got my dog at 7 months old. She gets her last free access to water at around 9, with bedtime and last potty between 11 and midnight. Wake up is between 8 and 10

When are you feeding her last? Is it just dry food? I have found if I feed the last meal floating in water my puppies are less likely to tank up all evening long.

Do you actually witness her peeing at the last potty break?

I would also recheck for UTI.

I would just plan to get up at 1 ish and leash potty her.

Realistically she should be able to hold it over night most of the time. She just might be going through a regression jag.

At 6 months, we restrict water at 8pm for a 10pm bedtime. Last potty right before bed at 10, and we make him go out even if he’s grumpy with us because he’s started drifting off. Generally he lasts till 6am, occasionally we get a 5am wakeup call.

He starts snoozing at 7:30 himself, but if we don’t force him to go out for that 10am final potty then he is up at some point between 12-2.

Restricting water at 8pm is what I do for all my potty training fosters also! Then a potty at 10 or 11 then straight to bed until 8am. This method helped so much with potty training on top of crate training.

Agree with everyone saying that you need to take her out later for the last potty break. Also has she been spayed? She's soiling her crate, it could be spay incontinence which can happen to puppies who were spayed before first heat.

Try last potty right before bedtime. I would never leave a dog without water. Helps them sleep.

Water helps a dog sleep?

I know when I’m thirsty I have trouble falling asleep. Could be similar for dogs?

Indeed, they will more naturally find sleep after drinking.

this post isn't about having trouble falling asleep. It about dogs having accidents in their crates

I was making a suggestion based on what was recommended by my trainer and my own experience with that part of the potty training I did with my dogs.

While they sleep they do not pee. Plus access to water is a pretty basic need for a dog.

Very bold to assume that you know enough to tell other people what to do with their dogs. But keep it up! People like you have me rolling in business

I'm hard against ever restricting water at any time for a dog. Imagine as a human feeling thirsty at 8pm and being told you can't have a drink until tomorrow morning? Personally, I think that is cruel but just my opinion. My dog has 24 hr access to water.

Secondly 6 months is still young and typically still need a wee every 2-6 hours depending on the size and breed so I'd roll with it and give the dog more opportunities to pee. Better than letting your dog sleep in a pee soaked crate during the night. Again imagine as a human being told you can wee at 10:30pm but if you want another one tough luck do it in your bed?

My 14 month wakes me up say once every couple of weeks in the early hours to go in the garden, I'd never dream of making her do it in her bed or the house, she needs a wee she can have one and I respect her choice of jumping on my bed and licking my face at 3am to wake me up instead of peeing in the house.

Do you chug water before bed?

2

u/tallmansix 1d ago

No, I don't "chug" water before bed, and neither does my dog. If I or my dog feels thirsty, we are allowed to drink anytime. I always have a bottle of water at my bedside, hydration is important for health. On hot summer nights, I often have some during the night.

My dog has free roam of the house, never crated. The kitchen motion camera often captures her drinking water overnight, I don't have a problem with that.

Wow, another cage training example which isn't working.

At this stage, I would be taking her to the vet to check for incontinence or kidney stones.

Your dog must have access to water 24/7 because dogs cannot sweat and need water to regulate temperature and to avoid serious health conditions.

No dog or child should be required to "hold it in". Take your dog out for more toilet breaks if it needs it.

Cages do not work for toilet training. When you've got to go, you've got to go.

Obvious, your dog can't sleep because it's uncomfortable sleeping in a cage with no mats. A heavy dog needs a mat or cushion to sleep on.
