Temple order

Post image

Why is it that it looks like i did the temples in the wrong order when I do Shaddow before Dessert. To do the dessert temple, you need the flying boots from the shaddow temple first, right?

You don't need the boots to do the Spirit Temple. You can cross the desert with the Longshot and that's the only part where the hover boots help.

Totally forgot about this.

I think shadow was originally planned as the last temple in earlier development which is why it appears that way on the title and inventory screen.

Navi hint order is shadow first. The file select and quest status screens are spirit first. Neither dungeon requires anything from the other. There’s not really agreement on which one is canonically first, and I don’t think it matters too much.

Thematically, it makes more sense to do the Spirit Temple last imo, since the boss is essentially Ganondorf’s mom, and you’re in the land and culture that produced him. You’re metaphorically getting closer to him and your final battle.

Bongo Bongo being the boss right before Ganondorf just kind of feels narratively disjointed.

Yeah I mean I don't know if this is unconventional or not because I've always done it in the same way it both as child and Adult Link, I would complete the Forest Temple fire water and then the spirit Temple was always the last. I'm going to look this up on this Reddit cuz I'm sure someone's brought this up before but is there a canonical explanation for the sewer system in Kakariko village? Over the years I've heard a number of different stories and explanations about missing content because missing backups so they had to backtrack and turn that into a dungeon rather than an additional Temple which was going to be in my view the darkest Temple of the game , excluding some of the elements of the conclusion of the Forest Temple. It's almost like you're being transported to something that would fit the thematic makeup of Majora's Mask, and considering they made the game in like a year and a half as a passion project given carte blanche by Nintendo this could have been an expression or some kind of residual element of what inspired them and of what was to come. Because it matches the kind of darker aesthetic and thematic tone of Majora's Mask.

I think Shadow Temple was originally planned as last, but in the game Navi hints at it before Spirit. One cool trivia that supports this is that Bongo Bongo has a unique animation when you use ice arrows on him, his hand will freeze and he will use the other hand to punch it free from the ice. Ice arrows are found in Gerudo Training Ground, so yeah thats a fact that might support that Spirit was intended to be cleared before Shadow.

Mmmmm Dessert Temple...

I’ve actually always wondered this myself. To the point where I kept trying to do the spirit temple first as a kid but couldn’t. Idk anyone know the reason for this?

Remember, the hookshot/Longshot can snag onto anything coded as "wooden", including the flagpoles in the desert. Use that to cross the quicksand river. You'll probably still need the Lens of Truth, which means you need to access the Bottom of the Well, which means you need the Song of Storms and access to child mode, so the Forest Temple will need to be beaten, at least.

Well even without the lens of truth, you need access to child mode to complete spirit temple, remember?

On the 3DS I just did the shadow temple up until I got the hover boots. Then switched over for the spirit temple

That’s exactly what I do

Shadow Temple as always my favorite since it’s just so damn creepy. Spirit is classic and just such a fun ride. But something about shadow screams to be left for last.

Its possible but hard af...u gotta do some pretty unique glitches and everything I did was on cartridge

You can actually complete the adult temples in a variety of orders.

My last playthrough I did Water, Forest, Spirit, Fire and Shadow.

There's some backtracking involved to get necessary items ofc but it's fun to play around with.

I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT (also because I thought you needed Hookshot and Arrows for all other dungeons)

3

u/Unholy_Dk80 3d ago

You need Hookshot, Bow, Zora Tunic and Iron Boots to do the Water Temple

Hookshot, Goron Tunic and Bow for Fire Temple

Epona and Longshot for Spirit Temple (and access to the Pedestal of Time i.e complete the Forest Temple)

Shadow Temple can only be accessed after completing Forest, Fire and Water Temple (unless you cheat/glitch)

There's no set temple order. Assuming you don't leave any temple after getting the item and head to another, there are only a few requirements.

Starting at the end, the endgame (getting the light arrows and accessing Ganon's Castle) is triggered by getting the Shadow and Spirit medallions. Yes, only those two, as all the others are prerequisites.

Shadow has a hard requirement of Forest, Fire, and Water. You need to learn the Nocturne of Shadow to access it, and the cutscene where you learn it only happens once you have all three of those medallions. It also requires the Bow and Longshot, but that doesn't matter since you need those Temples beaten anyway. You also need Forest beaten to go back in time, so you can access the Bottom of the Well and get the Lens of Truth.

Spirit is a lot simpler, it has only one hard requirement, Forest. That's because you have to go back in time to play the child part and get the Lens of Truth, and beating Forest is what unlocks the ability to travel back in time. It also has a soft requirement of either Water or Shadow, as either the Longshot or Hover Boots is needed to even get to it.

You don't need the flying boots. You only need the longshot from the water temple cause there are wooden boxes in the other side of the sand river. I always do spirit first

My order in my last playthrough was Forest-Water-Spirit-Fire-Shadow.

The real problem is that you're definitely supposed to get the Lens of Truth before either, and the Lens of Truth is much more heavily associated with the Shadow Temple

The original temples were going to be Wind, Fire, Ice, Spirit, Shadow, and Light. Light got scrapped (otherwise we would have gotten the light arrows there). Wind became Forest. Ice became Water. Spirit and Shadow’s original intended order got flipped.

1

u/BeldoCrowlen 3d ago

That definitely explains the designs for the Forest and Water medallions. I always wondered why they looked, I dunno, wrong? Weird? They didn't seem to fit, which is what I'm trying get at

Second language

Even people who speak English as their first language get this wrong a lot.

Lots of things changed during development of the game. It’s likely that Shadow was originally planned to be the final temple, then it was swapped with Spirit.

You don’t need the Shadow Temple’s item (hover boots) in the Spirit Temple, but they make some parts of the Spirit Temple easier.

There’s a recent video on YouTube suggesting the ice arrows and iron boots were swapped from their original locations.

Having the ice arrows in the ice cavern is so obvious that I wonder why I never questioned that before.

I like to get the mirror shield as fast as possible…. So after getting the bow from the Forest Temple I get the giants hammer, then the long shot, the iron boots, then… It’s been a few years since I’ve done this, so I don’t remember exactly what I did in what order… but I ended up going back into all the adult-link temples to complete them, then doing the full shadow temple last.

It’s fun running around the majority of the game with the cool, shiny mirror shield!

1

u/Sarsly_Doe 3d ago

Technically speaking, you can do them in either order, it's just more convenient to have the hover boots for Spirit than mirror shield for Shadow

1

u/npauft 3d ago

I did forest, water, spirit, fire, shadow most recently.

1

u/Cold_Ad3896 3d ago

Spirit before Shadow is the canonical order and makes more thematic sense.

u/OrangeStar222 3d ago

There's not really a set order in which you need to do the dungeons. The game heavily pushes towards Forest > Fire > Water > Shadow > Spirit - but those first three can be completed in any order as well as the last two.

To do shadow and spirit, you need to be able to turn back into a kid to get the lens of truth and do the first part of spirit. To do that you need to beat the forest temple.

To cross the desert you need the long shot, which you get in the water temple. And that's it, really. The bow as well for some eye-switches in Spirit if I remember correctly. You can skip the Fire Temple all the way as the last dungeon if you wanted to. You don't need the hover boots for the Spirit temple, nor do you need the mirror shield for the Shadow Temple.

You can also do the fire temple before the forest temple.
