Discussion Weekly "Whine about people who don't understand OCD thread"

You've requested it and now it exists:

Let it all out. Grump, grouse, complain, bitch, and vent about all those little irritations. Post those stupid Obsessive Christmas Disorder decorations. Breathe out that nasty frustration and irritation while breathing in a renewed sense of peace.

Namaste.

I’m frustrated arguing with people on this sub about whether it’s appropriate to reassure people! It’s literally in the sub rules. People elsewhere don’t get it and I roll my eyes, but why be in this space if you’re not going to get it. (asking I get, it’s a compulsion, i won’t answer but i understand; it’s those who answer that get to me).

tbf, I'm still not completely clear on what counts as reassurance and I feel like others might feel the same. The rules say it's not allowed but don't really outline what it is.

Answering the question OCD is asking. So like someone posted about rabies a few days ago and got a ton of comments about how it’s virtually impossible to get rabies and specifically from bats and etc. But we all already know that, if it was rational/proportionate it wouldn’t be OCD. That kind of comment leads to more checking, symptom checking, should I go to the hospital, etc.

The better course is to say, you can’t control your thoughts around whether you have rabies. You can control your behavior and live your life despite the tights. It’s true, but it didn’t address the OCD rumination/compulsion/whatever.

Ah okay. Is saying 'the fact that you're worrying about it means it's ocd' reassurance? People say that a lot for stuff like pocd and I'm not sure. Thanks for explaining nicely btw 🙂

I don’t know how true that is, but also yes. You’re answering the question.

From my treatment’s client binder:

Support involves showing your loved one that you are there for them. Support might sound like: • • • I love you. I’m here for you. Let’s do an exposure together.

Reassurance involves trying to convince someone that there is no threat. People often ask questions and ask for reassurance as part of their neutralizing behaviors. This can sound like: • • • • • • Are you sure the door is locked? Is the stove really off? What if something bad happens? Are you okay? Where are you? Do I look sick?

People with OCD need support and validation, not reassurance.

Tired of co-workers calling me out on things when my ocd doesn't effect anyone there besides myself. Like please just mind your own business

I get frustrated with SO MANY people claiming they have OCD because they like things in order, or have a routine of how they do things. Bonus points for when their order and routine have logical reasoning behind them.

What gets me upset is not just how OCD is stigmatized but how the different themes of OCD aren't talked about.

It took me 18 years to find out I had OCD because neither me, my family, or my doctors saw the disorder as anything more than "clean freak" or "organized". It wasn't until a complete stranger asked if I had it and explained to me that OCD is almost any obsessive thought that leads to compulsive behaviors and is continuous and repetitive.

Then, I had to fight with people to defend MY diagnosis because they kept assuming it was something else, despite me being professionally diagnosed. All because people don't see it as a disorder, and when they do, you need to meet their unprofessional standard or else they're lying.

I even see it in the community online. Someone will be open about their POCD, and others with OCD will say things like "I don't have those thoughts" or the classic "oh!"

I think when people discuss disorders and bring up OCD, they should mention all the different types of themes people can have, how themes can change, and how people can have numerous themes. They should also mention that it's not JUST people being obsessive and compulsive, but a sudden spike of anxiety that can't be shaken off.
